Touch Me When We're Dancing

What’s going on in there? I’m dying of curiosity.

“Ryan, this is all going to be hush-hush. I’m afraid if Sandra or George Crier get wind of what we’re doing, they’ll try to copy us.”

“I won’t say a word. You have my word.”

“Okay, get back to work, you two. I’ll be home this weekend, and we’ll talk about it more. I truly cannot wait.”

After they were finished, Ryan got up to leave, hoping to avoid Jennifer until he could figure out a good lie to tell her.

“Not a word now,” Peter said as Ryan opened the door.

“No problem,” Ryan said, walking into Jennifer, who was lurking outside the office.

“What’s going on?” she asked, frowning.

“We’d better cool it around the office,” he said. “Peter’s not happy.”

“Ryan, he’s been so nice to me! What brought this on?”

“I guess we’re spending too much time talking, and he doesn’t like it. Let’s just cool it around here. We’ll be together at home.”

  “Jeez, that sucks,” she said.

“I’ll talk to you later,” he replied, looking around furtively, and then he kissed her.

She looked at him with a frown. “You’re up to something.”

“I swear I’m not. Shit, here comes Peter. Get to work,” he said, diving into his office just as Peter’s door opened.

“Jennifer, I’m buzzing you,” Peter said. “Why are you standing in the hall?”

“Sorry, sir, what do you need?”

“Order lunch in today,” he said. “For six. Sandwiches and salads. Not from that last place, either.”

  “Whatever,” she mumbled. “Yes, sir.”

Sitting back at his desk, Ryan picked up the yogurt and started to eat. Being on television was never a fantasy he’d had, even as a kid. They’d watched Sandra on television over the weekend, and Jennifer was fascinated.

“The clothes she has on! I’d kill for that sweater. I wonder if they dressed her.”

Now Ryan wondered the same thing. He supposed maybe he’d get some questions answered at lunch when Randy’s “team” arrived. Suddenly, his cynicism took over. He thought that Jack would be appalled if he knew what they planned on doing. It was one thing to teach about the history of change, how progress was often destructive. But to make a shrine of Jack’s work? He found it difficult to believe that Pam would approve of such a thing, to open up discussion again and possibly reignite the slanderous talk about Jack that was too often true.

He threw the uneaten container of yogurt in the trash and reached for his phone. The only way to find out was to talk to her, to risk Randy’s wrath. Dialing Pam’s number, he waited for her to answer, ready to tell her the truth.
