The rest of our party continued debating their favorite dream cars, leaving Cole and me in our own little moment.

“That’s okay. We’ve all been busy and—”

“And you avoid me.” Cole’s words were pointed but gentle.

Guiltily, I looked down at my beer. “It’s not you, Cole.”

He placed his hand on my back, and I could feel the heat of his touch, along with the essence of his wolf. Cole seemed like he was trying to decide something. “Do you like to hike?”

That was unexpected. Even though I knew that I shouldn’t encourage Cole, I liked him. And the woman in me felt all the warm fuzzies from his attention. “Yes, I do.”

“Then let’s go hiking together. Just as friends. No pressure. Just two friends doing something they enjoy,” he said happily.

My mind screamed at me to do one thing, yet my heart wanted to go hiking with this handsome firefighter who had a heart of gold. A cell phone began buzzing somewhere. “Cole. I don’t—”

“Who’s phone is that?” Daisy asked, looking around our table.

The buzzing continued, and everyone’s attention was now on finding the phone.

Cole lifted my bag from off the back of my chair. “Is it yours?”

“Oh!” Surprised, I took the purse from him and dug through it until I found the phone.

It stopped ringing by the time my hand connected with the phone. My heart was pounding inside my chest so hard, I thought I’d pass out. Everyone was staring at me expectantly.

“It was probably a wrong number,” I said, dropping it back into the bag. The only reason I kept a phone was so that Bill could reach me. That, and I occasionally needed to make a call.

They continued to stare at me.

“Aren’t you going to check who called?” Cole asked.

Before I could think of an answer, my phone pinged. I couldn’t help but look at my phone, lying in my purse like a snake that was about to strike. I slowly pulled it out.

There was a text notification. I never received text messages. Nobody but Bill and a few utility companies knew this number. I glanced over to see if Bill was messing with me. He was deep in conversation with a patron at the bar.

I met Cole’s gaze. I wasn’t certain what he was thinking, and I didn’t have time to worry about it. I stood quickly and Cole did the same.

  “Everything okay?” he asked.

“Yeah, I just remembered that I’ve got something to do early in the morning. I should get home,” I said, turning to leave.

Cole grabbed my arm and I hesitated. “What about hiking?”

“Maybe another time, Cole. I’m kind of busy this week. Goodnight.” I pulled out of his grasp.

Cole’s expression looked stunned, but I had no time to feel bad.

As soon as I was out of the bar, I pulled my phone out and opened the message. My palms began to sweat, and my breath came hard and fast as I read the words.

  I’ve missed you, Little Red.

  the end . . .

  but not really.
