  “What’s up?” Lazarus asked.

  “It’s not good,” the caller replied.

  “Talk to me. Tell me what’s going on,” encouraged Lazarus.

  The almost entirely one-sided conversation lasted almost two minutes. Lazarus adding one question and one comment during the call.

  When the conversation was over, Lazarus pulled a Gurkha Black Dragon from a humidor tube in his shirt pocket. He lit it, staring out into the Atlantic. His hand was steady as a rock. You couldn’t say the same for what was going on inside him. Lazarus’ eyes told that story. They slowly turned black as midnight as the cigar smoke drifting lazily on the gentle east wind.
