When Ray pulled up at the house, he stopped. There was only one light on in the house, and it came from the attic window.

“This is the house,” Breon said. “Nigga, that shit look like some squatters or crack heads or somethin’ are stayin’ in it. Are you sure this shit is right or what?”

“Nigga, that’s the fuckin’ address the nigga put down,” Ray said. “And I told you what my cousin said and stuff about how people will use just any old address, even if it’s not theirs and stuff. For all we know, he might not live here or nothin’, but shit at least we know that he knew or know somebody that live here. That’s a fuckin’ start.”

Breon turned away, not liking to be sitting in the middle of the street in this kind of neighborhood. “Man, I wanna come see this shit during the day,” he said. “I mean, then we might be able to figure out if someone really actually do live up in that piece of shit or if somebody is just stayin’ there and stuff because the place is fuckin’ empty. I can’t believe that there would even still be any niggas who live on this block, or any of these blocks.”

“You know how the city ignore this shit,” Ray said. “And I would bet everything that I own that that’s the exact reason that Dante stay over here. He know that he close, but ain’t nobody gon’ really be lookin’ for him if he stay over here.”

  “Yeah, I see,” Breon said.

Just as Breon was about to go on with talking about coming over during the day some more and seeing what they really see, a gun shot rang out into the cold air. Out of instinct, he and Ray both ducked and looked around.

“Damn, nigga!” Breon yelled. “What the fuck is you doin’?”

  Another gunshot rang out.

“Pull the fuck off and shit before these niggas try to kill us and shit!” Breon said. “I told you about comin’ over here at night and shit. It don’t get too cold for the savages to come out and start fuckin’ with niggas.”

“Nigga, this ain’t the savages,” Ray said, fumbling around to put his car into drive. Just then, they both could see the door opening at the house where Dante may have been staying. A tall, thin man with a gun, partially hidden by the shadow of his porch, but partially seen by the light of the moon, stepped out. He quickly made his way down to the street. “Fuck! Fuck!”

Breon and Ray had never felt so helpless in their lives. When Ray did finally get his car into drive, he had unknowingly pressed the accelerator too fast. Doing so caused his tires to spin against the snow. “What the fuck?” Breon yelled. “Nigga, is you stupid? He comin’ at us right now, don’t you see? Pull the fuck off! Pull the fuck off!”

“Nigga, my tires,” Ray said. “The snow.”

  “Fuck!” Breon yelled.

Just then, another gunshot rang out. This time, however, the bullet flew into the backseat window of Ray’s car. Glass shattered everywhere, bits and pieces of it landing on the backs of both Ray’s and Breon’s neck.

Ray managed to gain a little bit of traction just as the tall man was coming out onto the sidewalk. He then pulled off, heading down the block as fast as he could. He and Breon continued to duck their heads as bullets flew at their car, some hitting the bumper and others hitting any random square inch on the sides.

“What the fuck?” Breon asked, very angrily, as soon as they’d turned the corner and had officially gotten away from that block. “What took you so long to pull off and shit, nigga?”

“Nigga, I told you!” Ray said. “My fuckin’ tires was stuck. It’s so damn dark over there, I know you ain’t really think that I saw that comin’ and stuff, did you?”

“Nigga, whatever,” Breon said, looking back at the street. “You don’t think that shit was random, do you?”

“Random?” Ray asked, surprised that Breon would even be asking such a question. “I guess you really ain’t been about this life for real in a minute, huh?” he asked. “You know goddamn well that that shit wasn’t random and you know it nigga. You know it was that nigga, Dante.”

“Fuck,” Breon said. “And now he gon’ know that we onto him and stuff.”

Ray shrugged. “Fuck, I don’t know what the nigga know,” he said. “Plus, you see how tinted my windows are and shit. For all we know, he ain’t even see our faces or nothin’ like that. Shit, with as many niggas as he done pissed off, like that nigga Kiwi was saying, Dante could have a bunch of dudes after him and not even know.”

“Yeah, but he ain’t runnin’ up in a bunch of dudes’ cousins’ houses and beatin’ the shit outta them with a belt or nothin’ like that,” Breon said. “That’s the difference. This nigga know what the fuck he doin’. Hell, with all the time he spend in and out of jail and stuff, you know he done had plenty time to think about that shit.”

“So, what you try’na do and shit,” Ray asked. “You just wanna go back during the day and shit to make sure and go from there.”

Breon took a moment to think, seeing that they were coming up to an intersection where they could either turn right and head toward downtown, toward the highway, or they could turn left and head back out to their neighborhoods.

“Fuck that shit!” Breon said, feeling his blood pump. “I wanna kill that nigga tonight. Swear to God, I wanna kill that nigga tonight. Let me hit this chick up so we can go get the heat. I ain’t think we was gon’ need that shit sooner than this, but fuck it! I’m not gon’ just let that nigga kill me. Like you said, you know that was Dante or whoever the fuck he stay with and around. All them niggas got time to do is sit up and look out the window and shit and watch people and shit. So, I say we surprise him and shit. Let him think that he scared us off and stuff and just when he ain’t lookin’ tonight, or just when we know that he gon’ be layin’ his head down to sleep, we fuck that nigga up. Maybe get him to come to the window or something by doin’ some shit and shoot.”

“Man, if you say so,” Ray said.

Ray sat there quietly, driving the car in no particular direction. He listened as Breon called and woke up his new side chick. He wanted to snicker, as just hearing the way he sweet talked her really showed how his boy had used his dick to put the chick under a spell. Little did Ray know that he and Breon had just made a really big mistake. Going to follow up on the address that he’d gotten from his cousin was one thing, being seen while sitting outside of this address was another.

When Breon got off of the phone, he looked over at Ray and told him how to get to Nikki’s place. Ray was a little excited, as he wanted to see this big booty chick that his boy had been talking about in person. He followed Breon’s instructions, turning left at the intersection instead of right. Neither of them had noticed the set of headlights that trailed them, staying back three or four blocks—the only headlights that they would have seen if either of them would have looked into their rearview mirror.

  Chapter 11

Nikki found herself full of energy when she got the call from Breon. She could hear the seriousness in his voice. He had obviously just been shaken up. While he didn’t go into many details over the phone, because he was in such a hurry, he said that he would be coming over tonight to get the guns. He relayed to Nikki that he thought that they found the guy with his money and wanted to go ahead and handle this now.

“Of course,” Nikki said, sliding out of bed. “Let me get some clothes on. Just text me when y’all pull up and shit and I can bring them out to you.”

At first, Breon was going to tell Nikki that she didn’t need to be carrying the guns out of the house. After Nikki assured him that she’d keep them in the box and that they could just take the box with them and bring it back, Breon was okay with that. They ended the phone call with Breon saying that he would text her when his boy had pulled up outside.

Nikki looked around her room for a pair of black jeans she’d remembered wearing within the last couple of days. After sliding into them, practically jumping up and down to get them up over her fat thighs and ass, she then grabbed a sweater she’d gotten as a present out of her closet. With her timberland bo
ots on, she opened the other closet door and looked down at the mountain of things that now covered the box she used to keep important documents. Carefully, and strategically, she moved the things out of the way until she could see the metal corner of the box. Once she did, she pulled the box out and opened it.

Nikki, only wanting to help Breon out as quickly as she could, pulled all of her documents out of the box. Leaving them scattered around on one side of her bed, Nikki took the box out into the living room and sat it on the counter. There, she waited. She hoped that Gracelyn wasn’t about to get up for some odd reason and come out into the living room to spew her hateful negativity. All Nikki could think about was how Breon had said, “A’ight, Baby,” when he’d hung up the phone. He’d said it so softly that Nikki just knew that he didn’t even realize saying it.

“I wouldn’t do shit like help him rob a bank or nothin’,” Nikki reasoned with herself when she thought about helping this guy she’d known for years but had only caught back up with four or five days ago. “But shit, doin’ this shit is easy.” She then thought about all of the nice things she’d been daydreaming about buying right before she’d dozed off and fallen to sleep.

Nikki leaned against her kitchen counter, only hearing the ticking of the clock on the wall above the refrigerator. It seemed to tick in rhythm with her heart. Every so often, Nikki would glance at the hallway door. “I swear to God, if that bitch come out here and say somethin’, we gon’ fight,” she said softly, pressing her lips together.

Ray pulled the car into the apartment complex where he’d been directed by Breon. “She stay over here, huh?” he asked. “You know this is like hoe central and shit, right. I know a chick who stay over here. Well, I think I do.”

“Yeah, whatever nigga,” Breon said. “I just hope this bitch ain’t go back to bed and fall asleep or nothin’.”

“Shit, with all that you got her doin’, she gon’ really be wantin’ some of the dick,” Ray said.

“Yeah,” Breon said, pointing at Nikki’s specific apartment building. “The dick is all that she gon’ be able to get from me. I’mma keep gettin’ that pussy, for a minute at least. You know I’m not gon’ leave Trina for this chick. That would be some stupid shit to do if you ask me. All this girl is, is a body.”

“Shit,” Ray said. “Sometimes, that’s all you need.”

Breon playfully tapped his boy’s chest as they pulled into the parking spot. He then sent a text to Nikki, telling her that he was outside. He followed up by sending a text with the description of Ray’s car.

“Nigga, I’m tellin’ you,” Breon said, speaking softly. “This bitch got a ass that you won’t fuckin’ believe. No matter what she wear, I swear to God that thing will pull a nigga in.”

“Hmm, hmm,” Ray said, feeling a little skeptical.

Breon climbed out of the car as soon as they could look up into the windows of the apartment building foyer and see Nikki coming out and down the stairs. He walked up onto the sidewalk, standing as the wind whipped in from the east. He dug his hands into his coat pockets, hoping that they wouldn’t freeze. It had been quite a while since he’d had to be out in the weather so much. Glancing back at Ray’s car, he knew he was going to be super upset later on. The car ride over here had been cold as it was.

Nikki came walking out of the apartment building door, with the box in hand. As soon as she walked up, Breon grabbed it. Even outside in the coldest part of the night, Nikki still felt some kind of way by just being in Breon’s presence. These were the kinds of nights she looked forward to having him over, when he was free, to keep her company.

“You think you got the nigga already?” Nikki asked.

“Yeah,” Breon said. “We do. We gon’ go get this nigga so I can get my fuckin’ money and shit. He better have it, or else…”

  “Or else what?” Nikki asked.

“Don’t worry,” Breon said. “I’mma get this money, one way or a fuckin’ 'nother. What time you get up in the morning?”

“I don’t know,” Nikki said. “With me being up right now, I might be up for a while now.”

“Bet,” Breon said. “Well, I got my buddy waitin’ in this car over here and we wanna hurry up and get to this nigga before he try to get away from us or somethin’. For all I know, he might have my fuckin’ money and shit and now know that I’m really lookin’ for his ass.”

Nikki felt concerned, but also glad that she’d been a part of what was going on. “I see,” she said. “Well, I’ll be up for a little while probably. I’m not gon’ be able to sleep. Once you get done, you can hit me up and see if I’m still awake or not.”

“A’ight then,” Breon said. He forced a smile. “And if you are, I might run back by here to do a little somethin’.”

Nikki giggled. “Nigga, ain’t nothin’ little about that shit,” she said.

  “I know,” Breon said.

Breon quickly slapped Nikki’s ass as she was turning around to head back to the door of her apartment building. She giggled as she hurried to get out of the wind. Breon quickly got back into Ray’s car, setting the metal box down onto the floor between his feet.

“Damn,” Ray said, shaking his head as he looked toward the apartment building.

“What?” Breon asked, smiling. He already knew to what his buddy was referring, but, like any man, he wanted to hear the words come out of his mouth. “What the fuck you talkin’ about nigga?”

“Damn, nigga, you was not lyin’,” Ray said. “That bitch’s ass is so damn fat. You sure you can handle all that?”

“Nigga, fuck you,” Breon said, putting his seatbelt on. “I told you. That’s the chick I been fuckin’ around with.”

“And you already got her doin’ little shit for you and you only met her last week,” Ray said. “Nigga, you foul as fuck but I can’t blame you. Shit, that ass is so fuckin’ fat. I know she got niggas after her.”

Breon shrugged his shoulders. He really didn’t care if Nikki had other guys after her or not. “Nigga, that pussy is good,” he said. “And that’s all I got to say. And she can suck dick like a damn wet vacuum. Bitch don’t even come up to breathe.”

“That’s the shit that I like,” Ray said, pulling the car out of the parking spot.

Ray headed out of the parking lot and back toward the hood they’d come from. He was feeling a little salty about his window, as well as shots being taken at his life. Breon pulled the guns out of the boxes, seeing that they were already loaded as Kiwi had said. He’d never seen guns that looked so classy and sophisticated. When he thought about getting Dante and putting a stop to all of this madness, Breon couldn’t help but smile. He held the gun up toward the car ceiling and looked at Ray. He smiled and said, “Nigga, I’m ready to kill this motherfucker.” He looked ahead. “He done taken this shit too far.”

  ***

The three guys sat in the car and watched as the Chrysler turned out of the parking lot and head back the way it’d come. They parked in a parking spot halfway between the entrance to the apartment complex and where they’d seen Breon meet a chick at the door. Smoking a cigarette, allowing the smoke to billow out of the window of the green minivan, Dante flicked his ashes over the side as he, Edric, and his nephew Trell watched the scene go down.

“Guess that’s supposed to be his bitch, huh?” Dante asked. He snickered. “Y’all shoulda seen the way them niggas was screamin’ like a little bitch when I came walkin’ off the porch with this gun pointed at them. I hate that I missed, but shit it was cold and dark outside.”

“Man, why don’t we just go up right now and fuck this nigga up right here and right now, Dante?” Edric asked, feeling a little frustrated. “I ain’t with all this sittin’ around shit like what we doin’ right now. Shit, if it was up to me, we’d just walk up and put a bullet in that nigga’s head and be done with all of this bullshit.”

“Well that’s why we glad that you ain’t the one who sayin’ what we should be doin’,” Dante snappe
d back, speaking crisply. “Nigga, what I tell you before we ran up in that nigga’s house? The cousin’s house? I told you that you gotta work on try’na have control and shit over the situation. Yeah, we could go up and kill him right now. That ain’t no problem. I coulda went and did that shit at his fuckin’ job. The nigga only work up in Chinatown, you know that. But, see, that’s how these niggas be gettin’ caught and shit. You can’t just go doin’ random shit and thinkin’ that you gon’ get away with it. I’mma get this nigga, don’t you worry. But I ain’t gon be fucked up about it. There’s too many people over here that would hear a fuckin’ gun goin’ off and stuff. Look up and around you, nigga. It’s a fuckin’ courtyard with a whole bunch of apartments and shit around it. Naw, let’s just see what happen.”

They watched as the chick came out of the apartment upstairs and on the right. She came down the stairs and outside. Breon stood across from her, on the sidewalk, and took some sort of box from her. They talked for a hot minute before going their separate ways. As the car Breon climbed into made its way toward the entrance of the apartment complex, Dante’s eyes were fixated on the backside of the chick he’d just gotten the box from.

“Damn, she got ass,” Dante said.

“Yeah, she do,” Edric said. He looked over at his nephew, who was tall and lanky, dressed in baggy black jeans and a hooded black coat. He licked his lips and nodded. Edric started the minivan as soon as the car Breon had gotten into turned out of the complex and was out of sight.

“No, no,” Dante said. “We know where they goin’, back over to the house, but they don’t know that we not gon’ be there. I got a better idea.”

“What?” Edric asked, clearly annoyed. He’d been chilling up in his bedroom when he’d heard the gun shots begin out in his front yard. Naturally, he jumped up to get to Dante’s side. It quickly became a situation where they were hurrying to get dressed so they could follow the car. They had chosen to use the minivan, which belonged to Dante’s cousin who was also locked up, but over in Indiana, because they knew it would be the perfect disguise. And they were right, as they’d trailed Breon and whoever he was with for at least a few miles. And from the looks of it, they’d been led right to Breon’s girlfriend.
