  Description

What if the one thing you wanted most was forbidden?

Alpha werewolf King Howler seems to have everything he could want: power, wealth, and his own club where he can act out his dominant fantasies. But the one thing he lacks is his fated mate.

Shy loner Emerson has always craved submission, not to another human—to a shifter. Handing over control to anyone could be dangerous, but with a shifter, it might be deadly. Yet all his fantasies star a werewolf who can make him beg.

When King and Emerson meet, the bond between them is instinctive and undeniable. King can't resist the pull he feels toward the younger man, even though giving Emerson what he longs for is risky. Emerson doesn't care how vulnerable he is. He knows he belongs with King, and he's willing to do anything to prove it. As longing turns to love, King knows he must find a way to keep Emerson safe, both from his enemies and from himself, because in the end, nothing can stop an alpha from claiming his mate.

  King

I stood on the balcony outside my office and surveyed the dance floor. The room was filled with the usual mix of shifters who craved what they could experience here, from a night of dancing to a flogging so harsh only a shifter’s healing power made it possible to survive. Some of the men and women were clad in leather, others in hardly anything at all. I watched a young man in red leather pants and a matching harness move sinuously as if he heard his own music in his head. Cat shifter, if I guessed right. The wolf in me loved giving a cat a thorough pounding. For a moment, I considered issuing the boy an invite to one of the VIP rooms, but we were short on security that night, so I needed to be available if anything came up.

My younger brother Storm stepped up to the railing next to me. “You should go down and enjoy yourself.”

I shook my head. “Not going to happen tonight.”

“It’s been a quiet one so far, and you’ve been working too hard lately. You need some stress relief.”

“True, but I also need to keep a tight rein on things here.”

Storm bumped his shoulder against mine, then pressed against my side. I leaned into him, deepening the contact. Wolves like us craved touch. Sometimes I forgot how much being with my family calmed me. I had a tendency to be far too solitary for a creature whose biology insisted I needed a pack.

My body had also been insisting I needed more than the soothing touch of my brothers. It had been far too long since I’d played with anyone, and my most recent partner had only been interested in my skill with impact play, not my cock, so it had been even longer since I’d actually sunk into a willing body. I reconsidered tracking down the young cat shifter, but my wolf stirred uneasily. He sensed something that was putting him on edge, and that told me I needed to stay right where I was. This night wasn’t going to stay peaceful.

“What is it?” Storm asked. “I felt you tense.”

“My wolf is restless. I don’t know why, but something’s off.”

“Or maybe you just can’t let yourself stop thinking about council business.”

I was the head of an unofficial shifter council, which had been formed decades ago in an attempt to strengthen alliances between shifter groups. The other members represented the most powerful shifter species in our region, and each of them controlled one or more areas of black market trade. When the humans had learned of our existence, it had become increasingly difficult for shifters to earn an honest living. We couldn’t control human law, but we could control the criminal element. I was trying to change that, but I was being met with a lot of resistance.

“It’s more than that,” I told my brother.

He raised a brow, clearly not believing me.

“Of course I’m worried about the fucking council. I always am, but there’s something else. Something my wolf senses here. Now.” Suddenly, a smell hit me that was pure pleasure, like a steak dinner and the best sex ever compressed into one scent. “Do you—”

“Look.” Storm laid a hand on my arm. “What’s going on by the bar?”

A group of lion shifters, several of them members of the Crown family who sought to undermine my authority in the shifter world, had surrounded a slight young man. He didn’t look frightened, but from the way he was moving, he was totally wasted. No way could he consent to what they likely wanted: him naked, bound, and servicing all five of them. This wasn’t the first time these assholes had taken advantage of someone.

“Let’s go.” I started toward the stairs, knowing Storm would follow. He might not be an alpha like me, but he could still be intimidating as fuck, and most wolves in town had the sense to show respect to anyone with the Howler name. The old pack system might be mostly defunct, but there were still families who remained as powerful as they had been when they’d controlled a pack; ours was one of them.

I grabbed the radio I’d attached to my belt and opened the security channel. “Roc and Clinton, you’re needed by the side entrance. Dawson and his minions are at it again.”

“Roger that, Boss. We’re on our way.”

Even if Dawson dared to shift, he’d be no match for Roc. He was the largest, strongest wolf I’d ever met. Thank the Goddess he also had a sense of justice that matched my own.

I reached for my brother’s arm. “Let me take the lead.”

“And I’ll do what? Just stand there and look disgusted?”

“Yes.” At the moment, I was in control of my wolf, but if the lions laid a hand on Storm, all bets were off. I really didn’t want the night to end in bloodshed. The last thing we needed was another confrontation with the human authorities.

“Fine,” Storm said. “But I’m not walking away if they start something.”

The scent that had intrigued me earlier grew stronger as we approached the bar. I tried to ignore it, but it was so fucking intoxicating. I turned my head trying to find the source of it, tripped over something on the floor, and nearly crashed into a bear shifter. Storm caught my arm and kept me upright.

“Are you okay?” Even with our sensitive hearing, he had to yell over the music.

  “I am. It’s just…”

Oh, fuck, the smell was coming from the young man trapped in the center of the lions. The young human man who was drunk and way too vulnerable.

  My wolf stirred. Mine.

I pushed back against my animal instincts. I had to
keep a clear head so I could get these assholes out of my club without attracting too much attention. I was a businessman, not a savage. The last thing this boy needed was me being as insistent as the men who had him surrounded.

A growl rumbled in my chest as my wolf demanded I let him free.

  No.

He’s mine. They’re touching him, and he’s mine.

My control wasn’t going to last long, not with the boy’s scent driving me crazy. My wolf gained the upper hand for a moment. I reached between two of the Crown brothers who’d dared rub themselves on my boy. Once I had hold of his arm, I yanked him to me and held him tightly. As I held him close, I experienced even more of the nuances of his scent. The reminder that he was human and fragile broke through my haze of lust and gave me the strength to keep my wolf inside where he belonged.

“What the fuck are you doing?” the largest of the lions asked, reaching out like he was going to take the boy back.

One of his friends, who clearly had better sense than he did, grabbed the lion’s arm. “Let’s go.”

The lion snarled, wrenching his arm free of his friend’s grip. “No, the boy is ours. You wolves always think you can just take what you like.”

“No one here belongs to anyone unless they consent to it.” I ignored the hypocrisy of my words as my wolf—and my body—continued to insist this boy was mine.

“He’s plenty willing,” one of the others said. “In fact he begged us for it, said he wanted all of us to take our turns with him.”

“I did,” the boy insisted, wriggling against me. I tightened my hold on him. If he kept rubbing his round ass over my cock, I was going lose all credibility by acting as feral as the men in front of me. “I want to be fucked.” His words were slurred and one of his feet slipped out from under him as he turned his head to look up at me. “I’d t-t-take you t-too. You’re hot.”

“See,” the biggest lion said. “He wants it, so let go of him.”

“He’s drunk, and that means he’s in no condition to consent. He’s also human, which makes him off limits whether he’s sober or not.” I managed to keep my voice even despite wanting to shout at them. My father was ninety percent asshole himself, but one thing he’d taught me was the power of speaking just loudly enough to be heard and projecting every bit of alpha dominance and confidence I possessed. So far, it had never failed to make other shifters back down.

“I can be here if I want to,” the boy insisted. “I’m a gr-gr-grown-up. Make my own choices.”

“Even grown-ups have to follow rules,” I said, suddenly completely focused on him as if the five angry lions who’d been deprived of their prey weren’t growling in protest. “This is a shifter club. Humans aren’t allowed here.”

“Thasss not fair,” he insisted. Why did I find this boy so fucking alluring? I was usually turned off by men who got this sloppily drunk. But I wanted to scoop him up and carry him to safety. No, that wasn’t true; I wanted to carry him straight to my bed.

“I’m not interested in being fair.”

“You want to be accepted, right? But you won’t accept me.”

Fuck. How was he managing to poke at my insecurities when he was this drunk? Shifters were just as prejudiced against humans as humans were against us, but I hadn’t barred humans from my club because I hated them. “It’s for your own safety. Humans who come to a place like this end up getting hurt.”

He giggled. And fuck if that didn’t turn me on too.

  “Isn’t that the point?”

I took a deep breath. I wasn’t going to let this bratty little human get to me, no matter how good he smelled. No matter how much my wolf insisted something that couldn’t be true. “The point is to enjoy a consensual power exchange, not to be permanently damaged.”

“You wouldn’t damage me, though, would you?” He reached up and caressed my cheek, and heat shot through me like he’d grabbed my dick. I had to put a stop to this.

I glanced over at Storm. “I’m taking him to my office. Can you deal with this?”

He rolled his eyes. “I’ve got your ‘Get the Fuck Out’ speech memorized by now, big bro.”

“Fuck off.” I grabbed the boy by the hand—damn, his skin was warm for a human—and started towing him toward the back.

“I thought you wanted me to leave?” he purred.

“I want you to be safe, and clearly you have some ideas that need to be corrected.”

“Mmmm, yessss. Correct me. I’ve been a very bad boy.”

“No. Your body is not made to take what I can give.”

“You’re very c-concerned about danger for someone with a club like this.”

Once again, my control over my wolf began to slip. I growled, angry that this boy had insulted my club, feeling crazed with the need to tie him down and show him exactly what discipline was all about.

“Experiencing the thrill of danger with someone you trust after you give your consent is not the same as drunkenly offering yourself to men who aren’t the least bit concerned with your safety.”

“Why’d you let them in here?”

The answer to that was very complicated. Relations between my family and the leader of the lion shifters were threatening to dissolve into war. “I made a mistake by giving them one more chance after the last time I warned them away from someone vulnerable. They won’t be allowed back to hurt anyone else.”

  “I wanna be hurt.”

My fingertips tingled as claws threatened to extend, and my wolf rumbled inside me. I wanted to hurt him. Dear Goddess, I wanted to put claw marks on his soft skin, and—No. Even if I would consider taking on a human sub, he was in no shape to play tonight.

“Is that why you came here tonight?”

“Yeah, I… yeah.” For just a moment I saw the scared young man beneath his drunken posturing.

“There’s nothing wrong with enjoying pain play, but it’s not okay when you’re drunk, not even with another human.”

“I’m tired of doing the right thing. Tired of being good. I want to be the wild one, the one who gets what he wants, the one who’s satisfied.” His eyes filled with tears, and my wolf snarled, wanting his freedom so he could rip apart whoever had hurt this boy.

The boy wasn’t just a thrill seeker like I’d thought. He was trying to prove something, but it was more complicated than the usual I-bet-I-can-survive-fucking-a-wolf bullshit most humans who came into shifter clubs were after.

  Mine. Protect, my wolf insisted.

I would protect him, and if justice needed to be served, I’d damn well take care of that too. I wished I’d left the lions to my security team and let Storm come with me. He was the one who knew how to handle emotional bullshit. I just knew how to stare someone down until they ran with their tail between their legs.

  “I think… I think I’m…”

The boy had gone pale, and he had a hand against his stomach. I would have taken any other drunk troublemaker to the security office. This was my private sanctuary, and I didn’t want him to—I grabbed the trash can and got it to him just in time for him to be violently sick.

Now I really needed Storm. My stomach lurched in sympathy, and I had no idea what to do. Did he want comfort or to be left alone? A wolf would want touch, but humans were confusing. What the hell was I doing playing nurse to one of them in my office?

But I couldn’t have left this boy to the security team. I wouldn’t have even left him with Storm. There was something about him that drew me. Mate.

No, that couldn’t be right. But even after he’d been sick, the alluring notes of his scent were all that I noticed. He smelled like everything I’d ever wanted. I’d been hard since I’d gotten the first whiff of him. Only years of learning the strictest control over my animal side had kept me from jumping him already. Mate or not, he was special, and I wasn’t going to let him go.

I’d been sure I was done being sick, but my stomach heaved again. When, finally, there was nothing
left to expel, I tried to speak so I could thank the incredibly hot and somewhat scary man who’d thrust the trash can under my nose. Thank God I hadn’t spewed all over his floor. He might have destroyed me, and not in a sexy way.

I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand and grimaced. My stomach threatened to rebel again, but I took a slow breath and forced the sensation away.

  “Bathroom,” I croaked.

“Through there.” The man pointed to a door on my right. I took careful steps so I didn’t fall down on the way. I was only halfway in control of my limbs. How much had I drunk?

Enough that you were begging five giant shifters to take turns with you.

That’s what I’d come here for, to get thoroughly fucked, to be the slut I’d always wanted to be, to finally have a man take me roughly, one with claws and teeth and… The room swam around me as the reality of what I was doing sank in.

What if this man hadn’t come to help me? What if the lions had ripped me apart? I wanted to be dominated, to be used, but not like that, not with men who didn’t care what happened to me. I wanted a man who would teach me how to serve him.

I slipped and caught myself on the sink. At least I’d managed not to tip the trash can over. I set it on the floor as my knees buckled, and I went down.

Don’t black out. Don’t black out.

The edges of the world grew darker, but I fought to stay awake. I was probably the only human in this club. I didn’t think the man—wolf—who’d rescued me would hurt me, but I’d pissed him off, hadn’t I? And I’d broken his rules and then… Fuck, I’d offered myself to him. What was I doing?
