  INDEX

This index includes all persons, places, periodicals and works of literature which are relevant to Anton Chekhov’s life and which are mentioned in the main body of the text or the footnotes. Minimal biographical information is given wherever ascertainable. I have also included a number of headings for topics and institutions which recur in the work. Persons are listed under the surname most commonly used for them; in square brackets I list pseudonyms, real, maiden or married names less widely used, and many of these are cross-referenced.

To make it easier for the reader to reconstruct the Cyrillic, the transliteration of Russian names is somewhat fussier than in the main body of the text (´indicates the ‘soft sign’, è the ‘e oborotnoe’) and, to facilitate pronunciation I indicate the stressed syllable of Russian names with an acute accent over the relevant vowel. Russian entries nevertheless follow the English alphabetical order. Works of literature are entered under the heading of the author; Russian names of periodicals and literary works are cross-referenced if not nearly identical with, or in immediate proximity to the English entry.
