Derek grunted trying to keep Alice from slipping from his arms as he moved and slid down the mountain pass. The wolves paced back and forth, before moving in closer to get a whiff of the girl in his arms. Derek came to a stop when the trees parted revealing Joe at the center of the pack.

"Well, I must say I didn't think you had it in you," Joe smiled as his eyes stared at Alice limp in Derek's arms. Derek dropped his arms letting Alice fall to the ground with a thump.

"Why? Isn't this what you ordered me to do? Take out Alice?" Derek shifted his shoulders back and looked straight ahead like a good solider would do. Joe nodded his head and glanced at the young wolf beside Derek.

"And Danielle, don't you make a lovely pet."

Danielle held her tongue despite the overwhelming urge to bite his hand. She knew the plan and kept her distance from Joe as he moved in closer. She held her breath and her eyes straight ahead mimicking Derek.

"Loyalty is everything in a pack this size," Joe said spinning on his heel. He raised his arms up and the group of wolves howled and yelped on command. "It takes a strong leader, an alpha, to keep things under control. Now that the threat has been taken care of, we truly can live in peace," Joe gloated and turned to face the placid lake.

The water rippled and lapped against the edge as the stars flickered ever brighter in the moonless sky.

"Derek," Joe glanced over his shoulder with a wicked grin. "Cut her throat and toss the body into the water. I want to ensure the safety of this tribe and our secret."

Derek glanced at Danielle and nodded. Danielle moved over to Alice and nudged her back. The light brush of Danielle's nose on Alice's skin sent chills coursing through her. Alice tried to remain still as Derek dropped to his knees.

"One," Derek tapped his foot next to Alice's face. Alice's nerves rattled. She knew she would be able to shift in a moment’s notice but now that she was so close to her parents' killer, she couldn't wait another second.

"Two," Danielle brushed her nose once more to Alice's back. Alice sucked in a deep breath and before Derek could raise his hands up into the air, Alice shimmered out of her human form and rose to her feet. Her teeth bare and snipping at the air between her and Joe.

Joe's laughter filled the area as his pack growled and snarled at Alice. Alice didn't pay them any heed. She held her stance ready to rip Joe's head off as soon as he turned.

"I knew you couldn't do it," Joe said to Derek. "Did you really think I wouldn't hear the girl's heart beat drumming in my ears?"

Joe twisted his body around and before he faced Derek, he had shimmered into his wolf form. Alice lunged at Joe ripping into his flesh before he could charge Derek. Derek didn't wait for Alice's signal, he shifted and took his place beside Danielle.

Together the red wolves ensured Alice would have her fight with Joe uninterrupted. Joe lifted his head and let out a howl. The pack descended from the trees racing towards their alpha. Derek snipped and tossed those that dared to interfere off to the side, as Danielle took out those trying to hurt Derek. Together they thinned the herd of wolves coming to their alpha's aid.

Alice slammed her body against Joe's forcing him into the water. Joe twisted around causing Alice to lose her footing before crashing his head against her ribs. Alice whimpered from the blow and stumbled back. Before Alice got her paws on the ground, Joe lunged at her snipping her neck with his sharp teeth.

Alice's howl of pain rose higher than the snarls and growls of the pack. The wolves paused and turned to the battle at the mouth of the lake. Alice dropped her head as Joe sprang high into the air and came down on her back with his teeth plunging into her shoulder blade.

Once more Alice let out a howl. Bash rushed down the mountain slope pushing all others from his path as he made his way to Alice's side. With blood pouring from her shoulder and neck, Alice dropped her wolf coat and slumped to the ground.

"Is this what you wanted uncle?" Alice gasped for air as she covered her neck with her hand. The old gray wolf barked with pleasure. Alice glanced at Bash who took his place between the gray wolf and Alice.

"You thought you could steal the position of alpha, but something tells me you have underestimated me." Alice rose to her feet and dropped her hand. The wound Joe caused was already healing and closing. Alice towered over the old wolf as it snipped at the air waiting for Alice to strike.

"I am taking back this tribe," Alice glanced at the wolves around her, studying each one as she looked at them. The wolves whimpered and panted as they stumbled back from her glare. "This is my tribe," Alice said letting the full power of the alpha to escape from her lips.

As she spoke each word, the alpha command was clear. The wolf pack shook their heads confused as the trees quaked from the power Alice was unleashing.

"I don't know what this impostor told you, but hear this now. You are all free!"

Alice opened her arms up and closed her eyes. The surge of energy pulsed out of her like an earthquake rattling the ground. When she opened her eyes, the wolf pack was on their hind legs with their heads bowed. Alice flashed her eyes to Joe.

"You are not welcome here," she said. Immediately the pack turned on Joe. He shimmered into his human self and held up his hands ready to defend himself from the surrounding wolves.

"Attack her!" Joe ordered pointing at Alice, but the wolves remained focused on him. "I am the alpha," Joe coughed. Alice kept her eyes locked on him as his body began to convulse from the poison which was wreaking havoc on his body. He dropped to his knees and curled up. The water lapped around his knees as he stared into the dark reflection.

"Kill her," Joe gasped between the sharp stabs of pain.

"They aren't yours to control anymore Joe," Alice hissed kneeling beside her uncle. She dropped her hand down into the water. "You took something from them and they want it back."

"I can't give it back," Joe huffed as Bash moved in closer to Alice. Alice glanced over to Bash and shook her head. Bash paused and held his position. The moment Alice turned her attention back to Joe, he pulled his arm back and swung wide. His knuckles crashed against Alice's face sending her flying into the water.

The wolf pack growled and dug their claws into the dirt. Bash snipped at them keeping them in their place. The wolves held their position as Alice rose up from the water.

"You thought you could take me out with a flower?" Joe laughed through his pain. He rose to his feet and shook his body. "Who do you think showed your father that trick? Me." Joe hissed as he advanced towards Alice.

Alice closed her eyes and thought of her parents. Their smiles, their love, and their vengeance. She opened her eyes ready for Joe's attack. But he stood inches from her with fear dripping from his face. He stumbled back tripping over the rocks in the dark water and landing hard on his back.

"You're dead!" he screamed at the ghosts rising behind Alice. "I killed every last one of you."

"You left them here didn't you? In these waters?" Alice asked lowering her gaze.

"But how?" Joe huffed scrambling to his feet trying to slip away.

"It's an alpha thing," Alice said and nodded.

At her signal, the wolf pack descended on Joe and ripped him to shreds. Alice turned her head as his last cry faded into the night sky. When she looked back, Joe was no more. All that was left was the wolf pack.

"Those that are pure may return home and sleep. This nightmare is over. For those of you who are made, you are free to live out your lives as you see fit. But remember, the secret must be kept at all costs. You cannot let the humans know of us."

The wolves moved away from Alice and those that had the power shifted to their human forms. The crowd laughed and cheered—freed from the Joe’s shackles. Alice smiled, watching the families reunite and hug one another celebrating their new found freedom. Danielle walked over to her and nudged her nose to her leg.

"If you want to stay, you can. I am not going to take that choice away from you."

Danielle turned her large head and glanced
over at Derek. He dropped to his knees and shimmered letting the wolf out. Alice sighed and her heart splintered to see her best friend and her old enemy together. The red wolves turned to glance at her. She bobbed her head once, flashing them a small broke smile and watched as they disappeared into the shadows of the forest. Alice spun around filled with a bittersweet joy. But the emotions faded as she glanced around at the happy faces. It had been so long since she had had a family, and now that she did, her heart overflowed.

"Looks to me like everyone is happy you came home."

Alice turned her head to find Bash emerging from the water and walking towards her. He stood beside her with his crooked little grin. Before Alice could say a word, his arms were around her waist pulling her towards him. He stared into her eyes for a brief moment and she pulled him to her, pressing her lips to his.

As they embraced, Alice pulled back and cupped her hand around his face.

"How? You said you were bitten. Only those born this way have the ability to shift at will."

Bash smiled and brushed the wet strands of hair away from Alice's face. "Unless you are the mate of the alpha," he said with a spark in his eyes. He pulled Alice to him once again. His hands drifted to the small of her back holding her in place.

"I love you," she whispered molding her body to his.

"I know. I love you more, though."

  Epilogue

The sun’s rays broke through the tree line pushing the darkness back. The chirping of birds and the rustle of the leaves broke through the dreams swirling in Alice’s head. She rolled over, throwing her arm across her face to shield her eyes from the intrusive light.

“Wake up sleepy head,” Bash whispered in her ear. Alice stirred refusing to open her eyes. After all she had been through over the last several days—she didn’t want to ruin the peacefulness shrouding her. “Come on,” he cooed brushing his fingers over her spine. Alice shivered under his touch and scooted away trying to hold on to the nothingness around her.

“We got a lot of things to do today.”

“Five more minutes,” she mumbled trying to hold on to the dream. Bash pulled her body to his. The heat of his bear skin soothed her aching muscles. She moaned as she shifted closer to him. Everything from her neck down ached.

“If you don’t want to get up, there are other things we can do,” he teased letting his fingers trace over her hips.

Bash nibbled on her neck sending chills racing through her body that eased the aches. Her body shivered uncontrollably with pleasure as her body responded to his wants. His fingertips continued to race down the curves of her body igniting the passion within her. Alice’s eyes fluttered open letting the blinding light of the sun in. She twisted her body around to face him and snuggled into him.

“You know,” his lips brushed against the top of her head. “I don’t mind staying like this forever.”

“Then why are you ruining the moment,” she mumbled. “Can’t we just stay like this?”

“We could, but I don’t think you want an audience.”

Alice lifted her head up to stare into his eyes. He moved his hand over her skin until he had her face in his hands. With her favorite smile plastered on his lips, Bash leaned closer and kissed her. He parted her lips with his tongue as she reached down to cup her hand around his cock. Bash moaned as Alice’s fingers tickled his manhood.

  “Argh, get a room.”

Alice’s head jolted, and she twisted away from Bash at the sound of the familiar voice.

“Told you we had an audience,” Bash teased. Alice’s eyes widened with shock. There at the edge of the forest stood Danielle. Alice scrambled to her feet ignoring Bash’s groans. She raced to her friend with open arms. Danielle smiled as Alice threw her arms around her squeezing her tight.

“This is kinda awkward,” Danielle giggled. Alice pulled away to glance at her friend. Danielle’s face turned a darker shade of red before shifting her gaze to the ground. Alice nodded and pressed her lips together and shrugged to realize Danielle wasn’t accustomed to her nakedness.

“I can see now why you were never one for clothes,” Danielle laughed holding Alice at arm’s length.

“You’ll get used to it,” Alice said before pulling Danielle closer and hugging her tighter than ever. “I thought I’d lost you,” Alice said trying to hold back tears of joy.

“Well, you will at least once a month,” Danielle said giggling. Alice released Danielle and stepped back. Her ears perked up as the snapping of twigs startled her. She crouched ready to defend her friend. Derek emerged from the tree line and stopped short. The moment Alice saw the whites of his eyes, she stood straight and waited. When Derek didn’t move, everything became clear. Alice glanced at Danielle who craned her neck to see Derek.

“He’s not so bad you know,” Danielle said with admiration. “Once you get to know him. A big softy really.”

“I guess you found someone huh?” Alice said winking at Derek. Danielle blushed before turning her attention back to Alice.

“Looks to me like you did too.” Danielle bobbed her head in Bash’s direction and waved at him. Bash rose from the ground and moved over to Alice. He wrapped his arms around Alice’s waist and pulled her in to his body.

“So, what happens now?” Danielle asked looking around the lake. Alice glanced at Derek and nodded with a smile. Derek didn’t need to be told twice. He raced to Danielle’s side and entwined his fingers into hers.

“Well, I am not going to play alpha, if that is what you all are wondering.”

“But everyone in town is confused. Joe did a number on a lot of them and they are going to need help to sort everything out,” Derek said turning his attention to Alice.

“That is why they will have you. My parents wanted this place to be a sanctuary for our kind. Each tribe lived in harmony with the other, before. I don’t see why that can’t happen now.”

“But the word will get out that this territory is up for grabs,” Derek said glancing at Danielle. She smiled squeezed his hand tightly.

“Well, there is one piece of land they won’t get,” Bash said cupping his hand around Alice’s face and pulling her to his lips.

Alice pulled away from Bash and planted three small pecks on his lips before turning to Danielle. Alice winked at her with a smile.

“I don’t know about you guys, but I am starving.” Alice flashed a wicked grin to Bash. Danielle shook her head as the corners of her lips pulled up into a smile. “Who’s up for getting something to eat?”

Bash shook his head and chuckled. He leaned down and nibbled on Alice’s neck sending chills coursing through her and rekindling the passion. Danielle chuckled darkly as Derek stood confused studying the three of them.

“I don’t get it,” he said. Danielle turned to him with a playful spark in her eyes. She curled her arm into his and tugged.

  “Come on,” Danielle said.

“What?” Derek glanced at Danielle before shifting his eyes to Alice. “I’m hungry. I could eat.” Alice blushed and dropped her gaze to Bash’s arms enclosed around her.

“It’s Alice’s way of being not so subtle,” Danielle explained as she led Derek back to the lake. The water shimmered and sparkled from the golden rays of light. Derek followed Danielle to the edge and stood with her.

“I thought we were getting something to eat together.” Derek twisted his head around, glancing over his shoulder to spy on Alice and Bash.

“Race you to the house,” Alice dropped her hand and cupped Bash’s semi erection teasing him. Bash’s eyes narrowed as Alice dropped to her knees and shifted into her wolf form.

“No fair, you cheated,” Bash yelled as he watched Alice leaping over the fallen tree stump. He shook his head and shrugged before he shimmered out of his human form and followed Alice’s trail.

Derek turned to Danielle and shook his head turning his attention back to Danielle.

“Show offs,” she bellowed hoping her voice would carry through the dense fore
st as Bash caught up to Alice and they raced side by side.

“So, what is on your mind? You still want to get some food?” Danielle asked turning to Derek. Derek shook his head and pressed his lips to hers.

“Nope, I have other things I want to do.” Derek’s hands drifted down Danielle’s bare body. She shivered under his touch and giggled as he tickled her.

“Here?” Danielle asked glancing around the open forest. The sun light reflected off the water turning the lake into gold.

“Why not?” Derek winked as Danielle dropped to her knees. She opened her mouth wide to receive him as her human life faded from her mind. She sucked the length of him letting his cock reach into the depths of her throat, before she pulled it out again.

With lust filled eyes she smiled up at him. “I think a girl could get used to this.”

“Oh, honey, you haven’t experienced anything yet,” Derek said keeping his eyes locked on her as her head bobbed up and down. “I had to hold back when you were human,” he panted.

“But I ain’t human anymore,” Danielle teased pulling his cock out of her mouth and looking up at him with her big brown eyes. A growl rose up from the depths of Derek’s chest and rumbled his body. The vibration tickled Danielle’s fancy making her want him even more.

Danielle smiled and wrapped her fingers around Derek’s shaft bringing it back to her lips. Her lips squeezed around him as she took the length of him. Her body quivered with excitement. Moisture dripped from between her legs and all she wanted to do was attack him. With each stroke of her hand down his shaft, Derek’s cock thickened. A salty bead formed on the tip of the head and Danielle licked it off with a flick of her tongue, before glancing up to him.

With a smile on his face his lips parted and his eyes rolled back.

“More,” he grunted wrapping his fingers into her hair to keep her head from jerking away. The heat in Danielle’s body consumed her. She let out a growl as her animal instincts took over.
