I beat my pillow into submission and groaned out loud, ‘go to sleep Sian he’s just a stupid boy.’

I must’ve dropped off somewhere around midnight, because the next thing I was aware of was dad tickling my ear with my hair to get me up.

“Wake up princess it’s time to rise and shine.” I rolled over and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. My daddy was so handsome and funny and smart. Until yesterday, he was the coolest guy I knew. Bleh, don’t start that shit again Sian you’d make yourself daft.

“I’m up dad.” I smiled at him but I didn’t feel it.

“Are you sure you’re okay baby? you seemed a bit quiet at dinner last night and you came up to bed rather early.”

“I’m fine dad, just getting settled. You know, new school, new people. It’s going to take some time to get my groove back.”

“If you’re sure. You know you can talk to me about anything right?”

“Yes dad I know thanks.” He got up from the side of the bed and left the room bellowing for my brother to get his carcass up.

  ***

I saw Belle as soon as I pulled into the parking lot. I’d driven myself today and was feeling a lot better about things than I had the day before.

At breakfast this morning I’d given myself a stern talking to and decided that I was not going to let thoughts of Jace intrude. I’m sure it won’t be long before I met someone equally suitable.

‘Yeah but he won’t make your heart race and your pulse pound.’ Shut up; my inner slut bunny can be a nuisance sometimes.

At least I had a better handle on myself and I felt my old confidence as I hopped out of my car and made my way over to Belle and who I assumed was her friend Tammy.

“Hey I see you found her.” I smiled as I hitched my bag higher up on my shoulder. They were both looking at me strange and I raised my brow at them.

  “Problem?”

“Oh I was just waiting to see if you had morphed into one of the reptilian people since yesterday.”

“Huh?” I’m beginning to think my new pal Belle was a little touched in the head.

“Oh you know; I hadn’t seen you since try-outs yesterday I was afraid they might work their magic and I’d be persona non grata today.”

I slapped her arm playfully and we turned to head in. “This is Tammy by the way, Tammy this is Sian.”

Tammy was a pretty blonde who seemed a little quiet next to the more vociferous Belle. She smiled and nodded hello before ducking her head.

“Hey Sian wait up, I’ll walk in with you.” Jared jogged to catch up and I gave him the gimlet eye. Since when does he walk me to class? I must’ve been a pitiful mess yesterday.

I started to tell him it wasn’t necessary but then I saw the way he was pretending not to look at Belle and I bit back a smile. Well, well, well, looks like I’m not the only one who’d been bitten by the bug.

I was going to say something teasing but then I saw that damn car pulling in. My heart went through its little routine and I missed a step before Jared took my arm and straightened me out.

“You okay sis?” he was talking to me but his eyes were glued to Belle who was pretending that she wasn’t here. I just shook my head and wondered what drama was about to unfold between these two.

Jared is a dog of the highest order. Back home he practically dated a new girl every weekend. My girlfriends were always giggly and stupid when we had sleepovers and he was around, always wanting to be near him whenever they came over to study.

I was pretty sure that Belle was not the giggling type and neither did she strike me as the sort to be just one of the pack.

If what I suspected was true, Jared was barking up the wrong tree. Looked like we had that in common too. I couldn’t resist one last look back though and wasn’t surprised to see Mandy making her way over to him.

I was surprised by their body language though. He seemed to be disinterested in whatever it was she had to say while she seemed hell bent on hanging onto the arm he was trying to pull away from her grasp.

Hmm, trouble in paradise. That should not give you the warm and fuzzies young lady. But it did.

  Chapter 9

  JACE

“What the hell are you doing?” I pulled my arm away and tried walking around her. I knew she was going to pull this shit and had prepared myself. This last time wasn’t the first time we’d broken up.

Always before I’d taken her back because fuck, I had nothing better to do and the sex was good. But now I was really and truly over her shallow ass, and after yesterday I had no doubt that this time it was for good.

“Oh come on Jace don’t be like that. You know you can’t let me go that easily.” She ran her finger down my chest. I brushed her hand away and didn’t even look at her.

My eyes were glued to the ass of the new girl as she walked with her brother and her friends.

My smile grew when I saw who it was she was walking with. Better and better. I maybe should’ve been more careful, because Mandy’s eyes followed mine and the look that came over her face did not bode well.

“I’ve gotta go; and Mandy, whatever you were just thinking, I would forget it.” I gave her my ‘don’t fuck with me’ glare. She knows that look well. I ignored her pout and headed in.

It was time to go to work on my girl. I hadn’t missed the look she threw over her shoulder at me, or the way her face changed when she saw Mandy all over me.

I smirked as I followed her party into the building; my work was half way done already.

I felt the thrill of the hunt as I watched her ass twitch in those jeans. Licking my lips I changed course and headed in the other direction; too many eyes for our first meeting. That had to be something special.

  ***

“Jared, your sister.” We were standing in the cafeteria at lunch.

“What about her?” He followed my stare to where she was standing in line chatting with her friends.

  “Is she seeing anyone?”

“Oh damn bro, if you’re planning on going there I suggest you research the definition of the words high maintenance.”

“Dude I dated Mandy for a year I know all about that shit.”

“Trust me, Mandy, none of these girls, have a thing on Sian when it comes to that shit. They may think they do being the offspring of Hollywood’s elite, but trust me they’re amateurs.”

  “That bad huh.”

“I’m not saying one way or the other just know you’ve been warned. If you can put up with her shit you’ve got my blessing good luck.” He smirked at me.

I watched her every move under the cover of my lashes. That tight little ass was going to keep me awake tonight and that wasn’t even her best feature.

I watched the other hopefuls swarming around her, saw her knock back a few of them with just a look. Good girl. The only competition I like is on the field, though I’m sure none of them stood a chance. That was mine.

  ***

“Damn that is one pretty bird, probably stuck up and an ice cold bitch in the sack, so not worth the effort.”

No, that’s one hot fuck. I thought it, but didn’t say it as me and my teammate Alex watched her walk across the field later that day. As much shit as he was talking I knew that he was one of the ones on her scent.

No way that was going to happen. I watched as she set up for the twirl in the air shit the girls did. She was so tiny it looked like they could just toss her around like a rag doll.

I wasn’t too sure about how we were going to play this, with Mandy being on the cheerleading squad and me going after little Sian there might be some scuffle.

I was sure that Mandy would try something, that’s just the way she is so I’d have to protect Sian. However I played this I was going to have to be smart but there was no way to keep it hidden.

If there was one thing I was sure of, it was that I wanted Sian Claiborne under me as soon as fucking possible. All I needed to do was make my move and get past that mouth of hers. No matter though, I wasn’t
taking no for an answer.

I had an idea and jogged over to where Jared was warming up. “Hey Jared how are you at math?”

  “Okay I guess why?”

“Well you just got worst and I’m helping you.” He looked at me like I was nuts.

  “What?”

“Follow along bro, you need help with math, and since I happen to be excellent in the subject, I’m going to be helping out my new buddy. Tonight after practice, your house.”

He finally caught on and shook his head at me. “She’ll never go for it, she knows I can hold my own.”

“We’ll see, just follow my lead and don’t screw this up for me or I’ll set you up to get your neck broken when we play our rival next month.”

“Harsh but very affective. Okay, but you do know my dad expects me to give him a list of all her hopefuls.”

“You can tell him that list just got chopped down to one, I’ll have a talk with him when I come by this evening.”

  “Damn bro you’re really serious.”

“Uh-huh. Let’s go practice.” I gave her one last look before heading down field. The day was looking up, the coming year wasn’t looking so drab anymore thank fuck.

  SIAN

I think this bitch tried to drop me; no seriously, if not for my quick reflexes I would’ve been on my ass.

I played it off like I didn’t know what was up, even when she and her coven started to snicker and give me looks.

There had been a buzz all day that her and the hottie weren’t exactly as lovey-dovey and hot and heavy as they apparently were before summer break.

I wasn’t sure if that was true and had no real way of finding out, but after yesterday’s warning I was pretty sure that might have something to do with her trying to kill me.

I was working really hard at not letting my eyes stray to where he was on the field, but my body seemed to have its own thing going on.

My bra felt tight if that made any sense and I felt like I do when dad breaks out the cash for an all day shopping spree for mom and I.

Ain’t much can give me that feeling I’ll tell you that. But all day I’ve been feeling on edge. It could be because I kept feeling his eyes on me, though he hadn’t said anything to me.

I set up for my fly and made sure I kept my wits about me, just in case she’d lost her damn mind.

Coach was watching this time though so I didn’t think she’d try anything. I went through my routine and kept my mouth shut.

The rest of practice was uneventful so I figured it had been my imagination.

When it was all said and done I left the field alone. Tammy and Belle had headed home already after last bell with Belle proclaiming that she’d rather dig her eye out with a rusty nail than come to sit and watch a bunch of brain dead twits stand on their heads and jump around for no good damn reason; me included.

And since I’d driven myself, I didn’t have to wait for my brother, so there was no excuse to hang around and get one last look as his hotness.

I decided not to go to the locker room, just head home as is. I’ve watched enough of those after school specials to know how some of these things can go.

So just in the off chance that she had been trying to break my ass, I wasn’t giving her and her girls an open opportunity to jump me.

I didn’t see him when I left the field and was a little disappointed that I would have to wait for the next day to see his beautiful face after all.

I didn’t look too hard at my disappointment, or my reasons for it. I am after all, a connoisseur of self-denial.

I lusted after the Phantom for a hot minute before hopping in my car and driving off. I wonder what his family did that they could buy a seventeen year old a car like that?

It’s funny, but no one talks about him. Except for the few whispers I heard about him and queen bitch having a frosty spell, there were no whispers about the man himself. So I still didn’t know who he was really.

I’ll have to find a way to get info out of Jared without letting on to what I was really up to. I had the sneaky suspicion though that I was falling for this guy in a big way and that would be a very stupid thing to do.

There’s no way that he’d have any interest in someone like me lengthy looks and secret smiles aside. He probably had a case of wanting to be the first to bag the new girl.

It’s not like I didn’t think I was hot enough for him or anything that trite, but more like what he was accustomed to. It didn’t take a genius to figure out that Mandy and I were two completely different species altogether; and if that’s what he liked, well then.

  ***

Mom wasn’t back yet from picking Maggie up from school, so I had the house to my lonesome for the next hour or so.

My parents were in the process of hiring help. Our old housekeeper would’ve loved to come with, but she just had a new grandson and didn’t want to leave him.

I’d shed a tear or two over that one. Stella had been with us since I was five I think, and was as much a part of our family as mom and dad.

I made myself a sandwich since I’d only picked at my lunch. And no wonder, ‘he’ was in the cafeteria and I’d forgotten how to eat.

I knew every second of every minute that his eyes were on me and I’d become all thumbs. Belle was her usual snarky self and asked me what the hell was wrong with me.

So instead of drawing even more attention to myself, I’d pushed my lunch aside and pretended an interest in the Calculus assignment we had next class.

The three of us had fallen into a groove, like we’d known each other all along, and then there was my little Cassandra.

She was a year younger than us and didn’t seem to have any friends either, so when I saw her looking around the room for a place to sit, I’d called her over.

Tammy and Belle didn’t seem to mind and had even included her in our conversation, so I guess ‘and then they were four’.

Something strange was going on with me though I noticed. I’d taken one look at Belle and felt laughter bubbling in my throat, and with Cassandra I’d wanted to cry.

Not because I’d sensed any sadness in her per se, but there was just something about her that made me feel, I don’t know, protective. Like she needed me to stand between her and everyone else.

It was still early days yet so I hadn’t really dug into anyone’s backgrounds, but I planned to do that soon. Maybe I’ll plan a sleepover for the four of us; that would be cool.

All in all I was feeling very good about things. I very rarely got a case of the blues anymore when I thought about my old life and the friends I left behind.

Maybe I should call Jessica. Thinking of Jessica made me think of Jace. I could finally talk to her about boys and giggle like a freak.

She answered on the second ring.

“Hey my little starlet, I was beginning to think you’d forgotten all about the little people.”

“Shut up, we spoke like two days ago.” She’s such a ham.

“Oh did we? I forgot, it seemed so long ago, so how is it, meet any hot stars yet?” I had to go through the whole list of leading men that she had papered her bedroom wall with since we were twelve, denying having run into any one of them thus far.

  “So what’s the point?”

I rolled my eyes at her question. “The point is that dad got a kick ass promo and is making more money to keep yours truly in designer wear.”

“Meh, so any cute boys?” she said it in a singsong voice. I think Jessica was more bummed about my dating situation back home than I was.

  She wanted t
o do the whole double dating thing and sharing stories in my back yard around the campfire that dad would build for us in the summer and fall.

For the first time I actually felt that tingle that I guess most teenage girls get when asked that question.

I told her about Jace and the Mandy situation. “Oh she’s so done.”

“What do you mean, why do you say that?”

“Because if she was in there she wouldn’t feel threatened by you, unless the guy is a total dog who cheats on her all the time.”

“I didn’t hear anything like that, only that they were the hottest item last year and now, ice-burg. I did see the two of them together and she seemed way more interested than he did.”

“See, they’re on the outs, now the thing to find out is is it temporary, a lover’s spat or is it permanent?”

  “How do I do that?”

“Did you learn nothing from me? Geez, here’s what you do. You don’t approach him at all, like never.

Whenever you see him make sure you’re doing something that will get his attention but don’t be too obvious.

You know, like laugh at something someone else said and throw your head back like it’s really funny, that sort of thing.

“Uh Jess, that sounds really lame. Why can’t I just talk to him if I like him?”

“Are you insane, no no no no no, under no circumstances are you to approach this guy; shit I need to be there to oversee this first courtship of yours. Do you really like this boy Si?”

“I don’t know we haven’t even really met. All I know is that whenever I see him I forget my damn name.”

“Awww, my little chickie is in love.”

  “Shut up.”

“Okay this is your first real biggie so there’s no way you’re going to follow protocol, and the way you talk about this guy I’d be lucky if you don’t do him in the stands after practice.”

“Eww, Jessica I won’t do no such thing.” Though the thought made me all hot.
