Payback's a Bitch (Dangerous Game Series Book 1)

“You are a little cheeky,” I replied firmly. “I was wrong. We have a lot of work to do and we can’t make things difficult by pretending we have something going on between us. I know men like you. I’ve been with men like you. I know the signs like the back of my hand. We haven’t talked and you don’t even know my story,” I lectured, but my head spinning. My body was screaming at me to do something about this heat between us.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” This wasn’t the first time he had asked me that question, but now it was in a different context.
“The mood has been broken,” I countered. “I know you don’t want to hear this, but I’ve had a moment of clarity. We can discuss this in the morning when we’re both thinking clearly. Get some sleep. You’re going to need all the rest you can get to tackle the renovation. I will have breakfast ready for you when you wake up,” I said as he stared at me in confusion.
The way he was gaping at me, he would be able to catch flies.
I had abruptly taken away what I had been teasing to give him all night. In the same breath, I offered to cook him breakfast to really screw with his head. He didn’t know what to do and was completely turned around, unable to grasp that I didn’t want the same thing.
He finally blinked his eyes and put up both hands.
“I’m surrendering to something stronger than both of us,” He clarified. A certain part of his body was calling the shots. “I’m sorry, but I’ve given this a lot of thought and maybe you’re right. We should probably keep it platonic without making things complicated. It’s too bad. We could have had fun but I can see how this would be misleading. It pains me to say this, but I think we need to take a step back,” I insisted with my hand pressed against his stomach to keep his enlarged condition away from me.
“You can’t be serious,” he croaked. “This isn’t right. You can’t just play with me like that. I don’t believe you can stop what you started. Nobody has that kind of self-control and willpower,” he argued. His knob was threatening to go off at any moment, with the slightest provocation.
“There’s no reason to overreact,” I answered. “I think it’s a good idea that you leave the same way you came in. This would only make things awkward. I’m not sure you’re capable of having a one night stand. The last thing I need is for you to be pining for me when you have a job to do. It’s better that we stop this before it gets started.” I was now in a standing position with my hand on his chest, backing him up toward the door one step at a time.
“What do you expect me to do?” he said, flummoxed and totally unable to comprehend what was happening.
I was cutting him off in the middle of it.
“I would suggest a cold shower. It’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind. You were the one who told me this was a bad idea. I’m just glad that I came to my senses in time. I guess those beers really did go to my head,” I stated. My eyes were looking at the way his stiff cock was bulging with no way to find that instant gratification.
“What is going on with you? Is this some kind of game? You’re hot one minute and cold the next,” He barked with his hands in the air.
Cameron stumbled over a box in the hallway. I watched, horrified, as he tumbled down the stairs. It all happened so quickly that I didn’t have time to react.
I went to the top of the stairs and looked down at his prone form twisted at an angle that didn’t seem possible. Was he dead? Did I care? My heart shattered and suddenly I was on my knees, weeping openly. I couldn’t live with his death on my conscience.
It was a game that went terribly awry in a matter of seconds.

She is also a daredevil who will do anything, from bungee jumping to cliff diving, and she’s not afraid to back down from a challenge. When she is not doing life-threatening things, she is most likely sitting in her NYC apartment wrapped up in a blanket with a glass of wine, petting her roommate’s dog Miles and watching Netflix.
