"Your body betrays you." Unable to resist, he cupped her breast, stroking a thumb across her tightened nipple while she shuddered. "Just as mine betrays me."

"What of the woman up there?" Sabina growled, knocking his hand away. "Are we just vessels for your lust?"

"I don't know her name," he admitted. "But I know yours, Sabina. I know you, and have loved you since you were ten years old."

"You don't even know what love is!" She reached down and grabbed his prock. The movement was bold and hard, and he nearly fell to his knees at the exquisite pain. But to do so would likely kill him, so he locked his knees tight and held his breath.

"This is not love. This is lust. Beasty lust." She shoved him backwards, and he stumbled. "And you disgust me."

He braced himself and glanced out over the cliffs, straightening slowly, his organ still impossibly hard after such rough treatment. He made his voice equally cold, equally cruel. "And yet you came to me. You traveled alone in winter through the mountains to find me."

Jane Deerfield's hand hovered over the on/off switch, but she couldn't press it down. Turning off a computer always seemed a little like murder to her. Stopping access to terabytes of information was criminal, especially since she'd just spent five hours repairing the system, reloading the software, and making sure everything networked perfectly for the people who used it.

Jane stood up, hating to leave the dancing lights of the monitor's screensaver, even to stretch. She straightened, rolling her shoulders a bit before looking around. Except for the soft glow of the computer's monitor, the library was completely dark. Glancing at the clock in the upper corner of the screen, Jane gasped at the time.

Damn. Not only had she missed Mary's Halloween costume party, but federal curfew too. By a good two hours, no less. She hoped any police she met understood the importance of her mission. The rest of the world might view her as a lowly computer nerd and perpetual student, but she knew in her heart she was a warrior bravely fighting to keep alive one of the last free centers of knowledge available to all.

Instead, he stretched out his fingers to touch more and more of the phoenix's body, the tail feathers blossoming and curling around her breast. Objectively speaking, the art was incredible. The monks had taken a great deal of joy in their work. Apparently, Patrick did too. He stroked the red feathers and brought her nipple to a tight, hungry peak.

She hated that she responded to him, but how could she not? His touch was gentle. Reverent even. But...

"I'm not your thing!" she snapped, contorting away from his hand. "I'm not a tool or a sacred vessel or any damn religious artifact. I'm just a girl, Patrick."

His hand froze a scant millimeter above her breast. Her traitorous body ached for its return. She had to force herself to breathe normally and not inhale deeply just so her breast would graze him again.

"Have I touched a nerve?" he asked.

She glared at him. "You were touching a whole fat lot of them. Damn it, Patrick, I'm done with this game. If you have to boink some girl, then go get some druid chick. I'm not playing." He straightened, his hand dropping into his lap. Once again, her body betrayed her. She felt disappointment at his withdrawal.

"It has to be you, Xiao Fei." Then he huffed out a breath. "Come on, this can't be a surprise to you. You must have participated in the Cambodian gate closing we read about. How else did you get that tattoo?"

She swallowed, the low burning in her gut spreading heat into her body. "It didn't work," she ground out. "They all died."

"Not all of them. You survived."

"To a wise man, every day is a new life."

The screams reached her first. Toni Freedman was just putting the chalk swoop into the last letter of her morning inspirational quote when she heard teeny-bopper squeals become alarmed jeers. Within moments a full-out riot of noise crashed into her little special ed classroom on the second floor. She was already running down the stairs when her walkie-talkie sounded "Cafeteria incident" in its garbled, dark tones.

She slowed briefly as she waded through a crowd of lunchroom staff and kids. At a short 5' 2", many of the on-lookers were larger than her, but what she lacked in stature, she made up for in attitude. She was the adult here, the teacher, and the woman trained to take down either of the three boys mixing it
up on the floor. Of course, a little back-up would be nice, but when had that ever arrived on time? In truth, she was supposed to wait for help. Her training told her to "monitor the situation" until at least two other staff members helped her take control—one for each kid. To hell with training. She wasn't going to sit on her hands while two kids were pummeling a third.

As she pushed through the last of the crowd, she mentally categorized the incident. Gang-related: the somebodies against the somebody-elses, spurred on by some girls with affiliation to whatever. The particulars didn't really matter. Here at Crimson City's most challenged middle-school, violence happened when pre-teens jockeyed for social position. Add in hormones and post-holiday yuck, and tempers ran hot.

She entered the fray as two black kids took aim at a mixed latino/black—Victor Somebody, a relocated Katrina victim. The lunchroom teachers were doing their best to clear the room, but like her, they were vastly outnumbered. And everyone—including herself—had been trained to not step into the middle of a fight. It was just too dangerous, especially in vamp, werewolf, and demon-infested Crimson City.

She blocked a blow from the nearest kid, only to watch as the big one—Kumars Gray, aka hoodlum trash—planted a fist in Vic's face. Blood spurted from Vic's nose, and he howled in pain as the impact dropped him onto his butt. Toni lunged forward, body-checking Kumars before he could draw back for another blow. Ugh, was Kumars wearing body armor or something? It was like ramming into a solid wall, and no way could that pudgy body be that solid.

She bounced off Kumars, but still managed to throw him off his attack. He stumbled backward with a whoosh of Cheetoes-laced breath—yuck!—and caught a flash of commando-like body armor beneath his tee. Great. Hoodlums with body arm. Just what was called for in middle school.

Meanwhile Kumars's cohort was moving in. She could tell from his angle that he was getting ready to kick and she pivoted, trying to block the blow. She already knew she was too late, but hope springs eternal in a fight. She saw the kick land onto... nothing.

Vic wasn't there. He'd leapt up from the floor with another unholy roar. Thankfully, she was already in position to block him back down. So long as she kept herself between Vic and the thugs, things would decelerate. She took a knee in the belly, but had been braced for that. Same for the blow to her shoulder. At least she was larger than little Vic and he didn't have any armor on. Plus he was off balance, so she could press him back down onto the floor, pinning him on his back with all her slight weight. It was safest for everyone if she kept her body on top of his because Kumars and company wouldn't hit her.

Vic didn't understand that, of course. All he knew was that someone else was flattening him, and the kid released another bellow—damn he was noisy—while he squirmed like the very devil beneath her. Out of the corner of her eye, Toni saw her back-up arrive, quickly restraining Kumars and his buddy.

"Calm down!" she grunted. Vic was just slippery enough to throw her off, and—

She felt the sharp pain of a bite on her arm. Her reaction was automatic. The only way to break a bite was to shove your arm deeper into the kid's mouth. It forced his jaw open enough to break free. Except damn, this kid's mouth was big.

Only then did she realize that his body felt longer than before, shaped more lean and more hairy. She turned to look at Vic's face, her heart dropping straight into her stomach. Ah, hell.

Werewolf. And her arm was dripping blood from his bite.

Michaela Becker's heart sank as she reached for The Scarlet Letter. Sure, she loved discussing the fate of a woman branded by passion, the issues of male-dominated religion run amok, of government repression, stoic women, and sex, sex, sex! But she doubted her classroom of sneering, giggling, or comatose highschool kids were going to engage in spirited debate. At this point, she'd be thrilled if any of them had read the American classic. Even the comic book version.

Putting on her perkiest smile, she stepped out from behind her teacher desk and began the last class of the day. Please, she prayed, let them listen. Let me reach someone today. If that's not possible, please let someone's hair burst into flames so I can cancel class while I put them out.

No one listened, not even God. At best, her questions on the story received nonresponsive stares. At worst, well... heads in the back bobbed to "hidden" iPods while other students texted each other on their phones. And nothing burst into flames, except perhaps her dream of being an inspiring teacher.

As the period wound toward its inevitable dreary end, Michaela understood why she'd been nicknamed "Micki Mouse." She was a complete failure as a teacher. She'd wanted to revolutionize education; instead she was just another ineffective warm body standing uselessly amidst the chilling tide of teen boredom.

Maybe she should strip naked and stand on her head; that might be better than setting someone's hair on fire. A dozen other maybes filtered through her thoughts, but Micki didn't act on any of them. She never acted on them. Instead, she stuck to her initial plan: kill them with kindness. Surely just a little more effort on her part, a little more understanding and compassion, would do the trick.

The bell rang—thank God—but Micki wasn't done yet. There was one student whom she still hoped to reach: Lucy Varner, a smart girl with a bad boyfriend. Last year, Lucy's brother had gotten high and shot a cop. Now the boy was in jail, her single-parent mom was exhausted from working two jobs, and Lucy was at loose ends. Or she had been until she hooked up with her brother's best friend and fellow druggie. But the way she was headed... If only Micki could connect with the girl, maybe the child would see that she could do so much more.

"Lucy, could you wait a moment, please?"

The dark-haired girl looked up from collecting her things, and her brown eyes blinked beneath ragged bangs. Unlike some of the other girls in class, she had yet to develop a woman's curves. In truth she appeared very average for a fourteen-year-old brunette, especially in her Goodwill jeans and tee, though her skin and eyes held a hint of Mediterranean beauty. One day the girl could turn into a willowy Sophia Loren, but for the moment she was just a little kid without makeup, without confidence, and without a real friend.

"I wanted to compliment you on your short story," Micki said. "It was wonderfully written, but so sad." The piece had been about a young girl who looked for a protector in a world that betrayed her at every turn. She found her answer in a fairy godmother who ended up getting raped and murdered by a drug lord. Then the magic wishes turned bad, and the heroine ended up dying of an overdose. If fiction was a window to the spirit, then Lucy's soul was in dire need of a miracle. Micki so wanted to be that miracle. "Can you tell me a little about why you wrote it?"

  Lucy said nothing.

"You know, when I was your age, I really got into Mae West. You've probably never heard of her, but she was beautiful, busty, and bold. She did and said things that nobody dared do, and she'll be remembered forever for it. I desperately wanted to be her. I even used to strike a pose and say her lines." Micki dropped a hand on her hip and tried to look sultry. " 'His mother should have thrown him away and kept the stork.'" It was the least risque Mae West quote she could think of right then, but one look at Lucy told her she should have just gone for a sexy line. The girl was clearly bored.

Micki sighed dramatically as she straightened. "Yeah, a complete disappointment. I would look in the mirror and see this." She waved generally at her tiny chest and boyish curves. "The point is that I was looking at the wrong thing. Magic doesn't come from big boobs or a magic fairy godmother; it comes from...

JADE LEE has two passions (well, except for her family, but that’s a given). She loves dreaming up stories and playing racquetball, not always in that order. When her pro-racquetball career ended with a pair of very bad knees, she turned her attention to writing. An author of more than 30 romance novels, she’s decided that life can be full of joy without ever getting up from her chair.

A USA Today Bestseller, Jade has been scripting love stories since she first picked up a set of paper dolls. Ball gowns and rakish lords caught her attention early (thank you Georgette Heyer), and her fascination with the Regency began. Plus, she now gets to play in the best girl-heaven place of all: a Bridal Salon! In her new series, four women find love as they dress the most beautiful brides in England. Check out Jade’s website for details on the series and most especially Wedded in Sin.

And don’t forget KATHY LYONS! She’s Jade’s lighter, contemporary half. Kathy writes sexy stories of love in today’s crazy world! She loves the faster pace of category books and that her humor can really let fly. She leaves the dark, tortured love stories to Jade.

If you’re wondering where Katherine Greyle comes in, she’s Jade’s first persona. Sweet, funny, and with a love of all things regency, Katherine started publishing before the turn of this century. But never fear, the romantic soul is the same whether it’s Jade, Katherine, or Kathy!
