Murder in Treasure Cove
Page 10
It turned out that Brooke was worried over nothing.
Greg smiled wide. “I thought you knocked it out of the park.”
“What was with the weird expression that you gave me a few moments ago then? Were you just playing with me?”
He chuckled. “A little.”
“You shouldn’t mess with me.”
He folded his arms. “As if you haven’t done the same thing to me a number of times.”
“You got me there.”
“The important thing is that I’m really proud of you.” He opened up his arms and pulled her in close.
“Really? You thought I did a good job?”
He nodded. “Absolutely. It’s some of your best work.”
“That’s what I was thinking. Honestly, it came out even better than I thought it would.”
“Wait. Going into this, were you worried?”
Brooke nodded. “A little.”
“You didn’t tell me that.”
“I decided to keep that part to myself.”
“Why?”
“I didn’t want you to panic,” she said. “Besides, there’s nothing that either of us could have done to change things. We just had to hope that Sabrina didn’t get spooked. Or that she didn’t clam up in front of the camera.”
“This is a woman who has stared down countless murderers.”
“True. But you never know what’s going to happen until the camera starts rolling. After all, she hasn’t stared down many news cameras. There was also a chance that she wouldn’t answer some of my questions. How awkward would that have been?”
“Let’s be grateful that didn’t happen.”
“Trust me. I am.” She leaned back in her chair and took a deep breath. “Talk about a good day at work.”
“I guess the question now is, how are you going to top that?” Greg asked.
She chuckled. “Are you seriously already looking ahead?”
“I sure am.”
“You’re not wasting any time, are you?”
“I’m surprised that you aren’t. I mean, you’re the one who is always telling me that you always have to keep your eyes on the horizon.”
“I know. What can I say, though? Thanks to you, I’ve decided to live more in the moment.”
“I’m sorry for pushing you to look into the future then,” he said. “Just sit back and enjoy the moment.”
“That sounds good to me,” she replied. She then scratched her chin. “Although, now I’m kind of wondering, how can I top that?”
“You have plenty of time to figure that out. In the meantime, just relax. In fact, take a couple of days off.”
“Are you serious?”
He nodded. “You deserve it.”
“I can’t argue with that.”
“Besides, I have the next few days off as well.”
“It’s funny how that worked out, huh?”
He smiled. “In my mind, it worked out perfectly.”
Chapter Twelve
The next few days were interesting. It was pretty rare for Brooke to take entire days off without thinking about work. That was exactly what happened, though. It was a nice treat. Brooke and Greg had a lot of fun together. To the point where they almost didn’t look forward to getting back to work.
When they did return to the TV station the following day, things were quiet. Almost too quiet. Slow news days were few and far between in Treasure Cove. When they did happen, they really stood out.
While Brooke sat at her desk, a very odd feeling washed over her. She was not accustomed to a lull like this. It didn’t sit well with her. She was itching to cover a hot news story.
That didn’t happen. At least, not that day.
In fact, when a number of afternoons went by without anything terribly newsworthy taking place, Brooke began to wonder what was going on with her hometown.
Even though most of the residents of Treasure Cove were relishing in the fact that peace had returned to their small town, that wasn’t the case with Brooke. Deep down, she couldn’t help but feel like the other shoe was about to drop.
In addition, she craved excitement. That was just part of her personality. It was also part of being a reporter. She didn’t want to get stuck doing a series of puff pieces. Or even worse. Summaries of city council meetings. She wanted to cover meaningful topics.
With a number of slow news days in the books, she had to look in some interesting places for stories.
Then, just as it seemed like she’d have no choice but to work on a story about a local dog show, a development happened.
In the middle of the afternoon, a call came in. A crime had taken place across town. Greg immediately assigned Brooke to run a story about it.
As always, Mark joined her to record the action. After loading up the news van, Mark and Brooke drove across town. On the way to the crime scene, the reporter and the cameraman discussed their feelings about the situation.
“Here we go again,” Mark said.
“This town never fails to disappoint, huh?” Brooke replied.
“Don’t you mean, it always disappoints?”
“I guess it depends on how you look at things.”
“It’s safe to say that you and I look at the world very differently.”
“We sure do.”
“I was just getting used to the peace and quiet. It was nice to see things slow down. I even had a chance to go to the beach.”
“Good for you.”
“But now it looks like things are right back to normal.”
“Don’t you mean, abnormal?” Brooke joked.
“This isn’t funny. I was really hoping that things would quiet down for good.”
“You didn’t really believe that would happen, did you?”
“A guy can hope, can’t he?”
“I’m sorry to disappoint you.”
“That’s just life in Treasure Cove for you.”
“By the way, are you still thinking about moving out of town?”
“I actually haven’t given it anymore thought…until you brought it up.”
“In that case, forget I said anything.”
“Why? Because you don’t want me to leave?”
Brooke nodded. “Of course I want you to stay. But I also want you to stay focused on the task at hand. We have a job to do.”
“We sure do. And it looks like it’s going to be a wild day.”
“What can I say? That’s Treasure Cove for you,” Brooke said.
Mark laughed. “You aren’t kidding.”
The End.
