As he laid her on the bed, a contraction ripped through her body. Everything in her told her to push. “He’s coming now.”
The doctor frowned. “That’s fast.” He examined her. “Looks like it’s time.”
Keith got behind Colleen and cradled her in his arms. The doctor barely had time to help get situated, when another contraction came. She pushed hard and in the next instant her baby’s head appeared. Before she had time to look, another contraction came. She pushed again, and this time the baby slid out of her body.
Dr. Dobbs picked up the babe and rubbed its back until it cried.
Keith kissed Colleen on the temple. “It’s a boy.”
Colleen savored the sound of her son’s cry. “Michael David.” She glanced at the baby’s face for only an instant. Another contraction hit her. “I think there is another one.”
The doctor glanced up at her, saw the strain in her face and set the squawking baby on the bed beside her. Five minutes later, Michael David’s brother, Jackson Andrew, was born.
Later, when the excitement had died down and the doctor had left, Keith sat beside Colleen’s bed rocking Michael while she fed Jackson.
Keith kissed his wife on the forehead. “I love you.”
Her smile was tired yet satisfied. “And I love you and these two charms you gave me last Christmas.”
