by Glenna Maynard

“Call Pam. I’ll be there soon as I can.”

  “Isn’t she with you?”

  “Not currently. Just call her.”

“I will. I promise he’s going to be okay. I’m on my way. Kimber has him in the backseat trying to stop the bleeding.”

I go to the garage where there’s a few old bikes in storage that Grudge used to tinker around with and pray that one of them runs.

I roar away from the clubhouse with my heart about to burst up in my throat. I can’t get Pam on the phone. For all I know she’s off somewhere with that cocksucker who’d love nothing more than to come between us. All thanks to that fucking cunt getting in the way again.

Life is a fucked up funny bastard and so is his sister karma. Guess I’m getting mine.

My chest squeezes tight. If anything happens to Connor, I don’t know what the fuck I’ll do. I’m torn between going off to look for my wife or driving straight to the hospital to be with our son. I know Zoe is with him, but Pam and I should be there. Rain starts pelting against my back.

Just my damn luck that I picked a motorcycle with bald ass tires.

I was in such a damn hurry to ride out I didn’t think to put a helmet on. A fat raindrop hits my face, and I blink for a second. One second is all it takes for me to blow through the stop sign and into an oncoming car. The moment my body connects with the metal and I go sailing over the hood, my wife’s face flashes through my head. My sweet Pam. I call her that because she’s got a damn mouth on her that is anything but sweet. My back hits the pavement, and I pray that Connor is going to be okay before my head hits the asphalt. I blink my eyes as warmth spreads from the back of my head. My right leg burns, hell everything hurts.

Rain continues to fall as I struggle to stay conscious.

  Chapter Fourteen

The rain is coming down now in heavy sheets as I turn left to take Vince back to the clubhouse. I can hardly make out a thing even though the wipers are on high and my bright lights are on. I edge forward taking the turn slow. I’ve always hated driving in the rain. Out of nowhere we’re struck on the driver’s side. Something thumps across the hood as I slam on the brakes.

Vince knocks his head against the dashboard with a curse as we roll to a stop. “The fuck was that?”

I glance out the driver’s side window not seeing anything. “Maybe I hit a deer or something.” I roll down my window partially and peer into the darkness seeing a motorcycle I don’t recognize illuminated in my headlights. “Oh my God.” My hand files to my mouth. “It was person.” I turn my emergency flashers on. “Use my phone. Call 911.” I throw my door open getting soaked as I run around the front looking for the rider.

I find him on the opposite side sprawled out on the roadway. My heart shatters as I sink to the asphalt next to the body. “Link,” I cry out and touch his clammy face.

Vince jumps out saying something, but I can’t hear anything he’s stating. All I hear is the rain coming down. I got to lift Link’s head to my lap when Vince stops me with a hand on my shoulder. “Don’t move him. We don’t know the extent of his injuries. Dispatch has someone in route.” He squats next to me rubbing his forehead. “Is that?”

I gaze at him in complete shock unable to speak as I hold my fingers up feeling the sticky warmth coating my fingers where I touched the back of my husband’s head.

“Pam,” Vince barks. “Snap out of it.” His fingers wave in front of me. “Hey.” He shakes my shoulder. “Have you drank anything tonight?”

  I shake my head. “What?”

  “Have you been drinking?”

“What’s that have to do with anything? My husband could be dead and it’s my fault. It’s my fault.” My body shakes as the cold and wet of the rain seeps through to the bone along with the weight of reality. My teeth chatter as my body trembles with worry.

“Babe.” I press my lips to Link’s hoping by some miracle that luck shines down on us and saves my husband. “Open your eyes, honey. Brant, please. Come back to me. Come back.” I press my fingers to his neck in search of a pulse as sirens howl in the distance.

  **

Someone wrapped me in an itchy blanket. I can barely hold the cup of coffee I think one of the police officers gave me.

“We really need to check you over. You could have whiplash,” a nurse tells me, softly.

“Not until I know he’s okay.”

“At least let us find you something dry to wear. You’re soaked through.”

“Fine.” I only agree because maybe I can think clearly once my body regulates itself back to room temperature again.

The older woman gives me a hospital gown and socks. I sit on the edge of the exam table once I’ve peeled my wet clothes off and changed into the dry. They drew my blood when I first arrived. I guess the cops wanted to make sure I’m not under the influence. I know they are only doing their job. I have nothing to hide. I told them I had a few sips of beer earlier when we first arrived at the clubhouse.

Vince is getting his head looked at and I’m not sure where Link is. They aren’t telling me anything. All I know is that he is alive and breathing. For now it has to be enough. I can’t afford to fall apart.

  Until I hear him cry.

“Mom, mom,” echoes down the hall, and I know that call. It’s Connor. I rush into the corridor head snapping back and forth both ways listening. A mother knows the sound of her child.

Zoe walks out of an exam room with my boy on her hip as he chews on his fingers with tears coming down his cheeks.

“Zoe,” I call out with a slight crack in my voice from all my tears.

She spins around at the sound of my voice, eyes widening as she takes in my appearance. I catch a glimpse of myself in the reflection through a glass partition. Sopping wet hair dripping down my back. Eyeliner smeared under my eyes. Shivering in a hospital gown. I look like something washed up out of a well from a horror flick.

“Jesus, Pam. What happened? I’ve been calling. Link said he couldn’t get you on the phone, he was supposed to meet me but never showed.”

“Meet you?” I ask but then see the stitches on my baby’s head. “What happened?” I reach for Connor.

“He hit his head. Gave me and Kimber quite a scare. He’s a tough boy though.” She hands Connor to me and I kiss his cheek, hugging him tight as he whimpers. “Are you okay?”

I shake my head and bite back my tears. “You wouldn’t believe it if I told you, but there was an accident Link he’s...”

Her face pales. “He’s what, Pam? Where’s my brother?”

“I’m right here,” his gravelly voice croaks from his wheelchair as he is wheeled toward us with a thick white gauze wrapped around his head.

“Honey.” A tear rolls down my cheek. He has no idea what seeing him is doing to me in this moment. I thought I’d lost him.

The same nurse who was seeing to me offers me a weak smile. “Your husband was lucky. He has a cracked rib and a concussion. Some contusions. We’ll be keeping him for the night to observe him to be safe, but he’ll be fine.”

“Thank you. Can I sit with him?”

“Until we get him set up in a room but visiting hours are over.”

“Why don’t I take my nephew home. He’s had a rough night. Kimber should have the car pulled around.” Zoe Touches Link’s hand lightly. “I’m glad you’re okay.”

  **

“Babe, your ass is hanging out,” Link says with a hint of amusement in his voice.

I roll my eyes at him. “My ass hanging out is the least of my concerns.” I take his hand in mine after pulling a chair next to the bed he’s resting in while they work on getting him admitted for observation. I brush my fingers over his rough knuckles. “I thought I’d killed you.”

  “You?”

“It was me you ran into.”

“Why did you leave the fight?”

“I saw Danika follow you to the clubhouse. Just tell me why? What is it about her?”

  He squeezes my hand
hard. “You thought I was with her behind your back?”

“I saw the two of you. She was touching you and you had your hand around her throat.”

“To choke the stupid cunt. I gave you my word. Nav told me someone wanted a private word. I figured it was Vince. She said she wanted to apologize but didn’t want to upset you. I told her she needed to get lost. Came back out and you were gone. So was Vince. Were you with him?”

I suck in a breath. “He jumped in when I was about to leave said he wanted to talk. That’s all it was. I was dropping him off and planned to go get Connor from your sister.”

  “You leaving me?”

  “I thought about it?”

  “With him?”

“Vince? No. I’m sorry I got pissed and just assumed the worst.”

“Can’t blame you for that. It’s on me.”

“I love you, Brant. Only you.”

“Good ‘cause I’d hate to kill you if you try to leave me seeing as your my lucky charm.”

  “What are you talking about?”

“Never had anything good in my life till you came into it. Look at all you’ve brought me. Given me lots of good. Took a chance on me even though I didn’t have a damn thing to offer in return.”

“I’m a pain in your ass.”

“A sexy pain in my ass. C’mere.”

  “I’m right here.”

“Closer. Get in this bed with me, woman.”

I do as he wants careful not to touch his injured side or his head.

“Think I can get you in a sexy nurse outfit when they let me outta here?”

“I think we can arrange that.” I kiss him soft and sweet with tongue. Lots of tongue.

  Epilogue

“Don’t put that in your mouth.” I grab the paintbrush from Connor, and he smacks at me. “No hitting, mister meanie pants.”

“Are you sure it’s not too bright?” Zoe looks at me and back at the cotton candy blue wall.

  “It’s fine.”

“I like it, Mom,” Kimber tacks on.

It took us a few months, but we finally found the perfect location for the daycare. Zoe is finishing up updating all her certifications but, in another month, or so we will officially be opening our doors.

“Are you only saying that because you’re ready to get out of here or do you really like it?”

“Stop second guessing. You’re a strong capable woman.”

“Where do you want these boxes?” Nav shifts the newest delivery of what I am hoping contains our nap pads in his arms.

“Just put them in the back,” I tell him.

“Here. Let me help you.” Kimber grabs the top box, and he lights up and grins wide.

If Link catches the prospect sniffing around his niece considering she’s only fifteen, he’ll put a chain around his neck or his dick and drag him through the clubhouse property by his motorcycle. Speaking of my husband he struts through the new space.

“You ready to get dinner?” His hand moves to the curve of my stomach.

A miracle. Something we never dreamed possible. A baby. A part of me and a piece of Link growing in my womb. My doctor said he’s seen it plenty of times. Couples unable to conceive receiving a miracle after they’ve adopted or stopped trying. I blame whatever is in the water around here. Now I’m part of the baby bump club with Alexa, Wylla Mae, and my sister Jules. I told all the single brothers they better wrap their shit up tight. Pregnancy seems to be catching. We’ve all got a new bet going on how long it’ll take Holy to knock Hazel up.

“You buying?” I meet him part way as he bends his head to claim my mouth in a tender kiss.

“Don’t I always take care of you.”

“What about the rest of us. You gonna feed us too?” Zoe interrupts.

Link scans the room. “Where’s Nav?”

“Him and Kimber are putting away boxes in the back.”

My husband’s face goes hard. “Prospect,” he booms, and Navarro comes running.

“Hey, Uncle Link.” Kimber gives him a hug.

Link shoots the prospect a dirty look over her shoulder in warning.

I grab Connor’s bag and Link picks him up. “Well don’t just stand there. Lock up. Dinner at the steak house. Except for you, Nav. Head on back to the clubhouse.”

He takes off like a bolt of lightning.

Disappointment washes over Kimber’s features. Oh no. Our sweet girl is crushing hard. I should probably have some words and explain how shit works. Link is going to kill him it’s official.

  **

Later that night as I’m getting ready for bed my phone vibrates with a text.

Unknown Number: Are you happy, wild thing?

Vince. He does this. I block his number, and he makes contact from a new one.

  Pam: Very. I’m pregnant.

He doesn’t reply. Not that I expected him to. Nor do I want him to. I hope he finds what he’s looking for.

I put my phone on the nightstand and tiptoe down the hall to look in on Link and Connor. There’s just something endearing and sexy about seeing my hard, tough as nails man with our son in his lap reading him a bedtime story.

My husband senses my presence as I watch the two of them from the doorway with a hand on my stomach. He smiles at me and my insides go all warm and melty.

“He’s asleep,” his deep voice vibrates in the space between us. Careful not to wake Connor he closes the book he was reading from, placing it on the table next to him. He shifts Connor to one arm and puts him to bed. The lamp is switched off, and he stalks toward me with a predatory hunger in his gaze.

I start to run but he catches me quickly, hooking an arm around me gently, holding my back to his front. His lips meet my ear. “I’m starvin’, babe.” The edges of his teeth skim the shell.

“I already made dinner. I’m ready for bed.”

“Me too.” His palm slides up my nightie to my breast and warmth pools where I crave him the most. “Want that tasty little pussy for dessert,” he says, and I shiver in anticipation.

Holy is his road name, but there is nothing saintly about him.

  Holy

What started as a simple assignment became an obsession.

Hazel’s my Prez’s niece. He tasked me with tracking her down.

Falling for her was never part of the plan.

I’m not taking no for an answer. She will be mine.

If I have to kidnap her to prove my point I will.

  She belongs to me.

  Hazel

I’ve always been on my own. Nowhere to call home. No family to call my own.

I don’t answer to anyone. Especially not a bossy biker who claims my family ordered him to find me.

Refusing him was mistake number one.

Number two was attempting to seduce my way out of the situation.

I’ve been taken by the biker, but I don’t know if I want him to let me go.

Taken By The Biker is book 6 of the Charleston, WV chapter of Royal Bastards MC. This book can be read as a standalone though for best enjoyment, the series should be read in order.

  Author’s Note

Thank you so much for joining my RBMC Charleston, WV Chapter for another ride. I confess when readers told me they wanted a story about Pam and Link, I wasn’t sure that I’d write one. I’d cast them off as side characters who’d show up in the background as the series progressed but as is the norm my characters had greater plans. Pam and Link’s story wasn’t an easy one to write. I know cheating is a hard limit and it is a topic I cover a lot in my books. I grew up in the age of soap operas. I watched them five days a week with my grandma starting from the time I was in second grade. It was a habit that foll
owed me into adulthood long after she was gone. I love drama and tackling some hard situations in my fictional world. There’s a saying that in every story the hero and the villain are the same person. We all have good and bad in us. People make mistakes. I don’t condone cheating in real life but in fiction I love the drama and layers it can add to a story.

Next up for me in the Royal Bastards MC world is Taken By The Biker, Holy and Hazel’s book. It will be a full length, but I hope you enjoy the holiday novellas as well. I also have plans for writing in the Birds of Hell MC world in the future. Vince has yet to meet the right woman for him. Happy reading!
