Daddy Shifter

The look of concern in Sarah’s eyes tugged at Tanya’s heart. How could she tell her it was already too late?
“He’s my boss,” Tanya explained patiently as if to a little child. “Nothing’s going to happen,” she lied.
Sarah threw her arms around Tanya. “You’re beautiful, inside and out. Just relax and have fun.”
A knock at the door broke their embrace.
“Is that your date?” Tanya asked, blinking back the wetness framing her eyelashes.
“If it is, he’s too early, and he’ll have to wait another hour,” Sarah complained, stalking off towards the front of the apartment.
Tanya continued staring into the mirror. She knew why she was no longer confident. Brian was Tanya’s high school sweetheart, and the two dated throughout most of college. When Brian slept with Tanya’s best friend, it ruined her. He caused her to feel as if she weren’t pretty enough or even worthy of his love. Tanya thought her way through an inner pep talk. I am worthy of being loved. And if Andrew only wants to sleep with me, then he isn’t good enough for me either.
“Tanya?” she turned from the mirror to look at her sister’s mysterious smile.
“Yes?”
“Your chariot awaits,” Sarah said, motioning her hand towards the hallway.
“What are you talking about?”
“It seems as if the impressive Andrew Greene has sent his driver to escort you to the gala.”
Tanya grabbed her clutch and her wrap and rushed after her sister down the short hall. Standing at the front door was Andrew’s driver, who tipped his hat towards her.
“I’m here to escort you to Greener’s annual gala.”
Tanya’s eyes sparkled as she looked at her sister, and then turned to the driver who held a hand out to escort her to the Range Rover waiting downstairs.

“Ma’am, this is for you,” the driver stated, after pulling to a stop at the hotel’s front entrance.
She took the black and red masquerade mask he offered, and turned it over in her hands, before pulling it down over her face.
“I was told to inform you if you did not have one of your own, it would be provided for you.”
“I had no idea it was a masquerade ball.” The driver handed her his business card so she could call him when she was ready to go home. He opened the door for her, and Tanya followed the signs to the ballroom where the gala was taking place.
The red and silver decorations of the hotel’s ballroom were exquisite. Tanya gasped as she took in the beaded and sparkling décor. A chandelier candelabra hung from overhead providing romantic lighting. Glass vases holding elaborate floral arrangements were decorated with beads and silver masks on the front of each. It was as if the floral arrangements transformed the tables into works of art. Everywhere she looked, guests wore masks, transforming their identity.
How did I miss the part that this was supposed to be a masquerade ball? She should have read the invitation more closely.
Moving across the floor as if she were walking on water, Tanya found herself mesmerized by the scene. The guests were coworkers and affiliates of the company, yet, on this magical night, everyone was transformed by gorgeous gowns and tailored tuxes. She didn’t recognize anybody, so she wandered around for a while until she found an empty table.
A part of her wished Sarah were there to ease the discomfort away. Tanya wished she had gone with a date so she wasn’t wandering around alone. What if Andrew saw her? She took a deep breath and reminded herself that she didn’t care what Andrew thought.
A gentleman in a black suit with a silver handkerchief extended his hand towards her. He bowed slightly and pointed to the dance floor without uttering a word.
Tanya was glad she wore a mask to protect the fact that she was blushing. She placed her hand in his and allowed him to lead her to the floor. It wasn’t Andrew. She would have recognized him by his stature and his scent.
Etta James’s At Last played through the speakers as her partner drew her close to him with his arm lightly clasped around her waist. As the chords of the brass and wind instruments wrapped itself around the dancers of the room, Etta’s husky voice cloaked Tanya in a whirlwind of emotion. As her unidentified partner whisked her around the dance floor, she found herself lost in the moment.
His gloved hand held onto hers in a protective manner, while his other hand guided her through every move. She wished for a moment that it was Andrew who held her closely. She imagined what it would be like to press her cheek against his chest, and to feel his warm touch once again.
Just for the moment, Tanya allowed herself to pretend she was dancing in Andrew’s arms and he wanted her there. She imagined what it would be like to be loved by him. She knew in her heart there was another side to him, one waiting to be discovered and unleashed. But she also knew she was treading in dangerous waters, but she couldn’t help that Andrew consumed her thoughts.
The song came to an end. This was not Andrew, and she needed a distraction.
Her partner led her back to the table, where others had gathered to enjoy the evening. She greeted her companions for the night and made small talk with them, enjoying the festivities.
As the evening went on, Tanya identified a few of her coworkers, especially Thad who wore a velvet, purple suit with rhinestones across the back of the jacket. She ate, laughed, and worked the room, making small talk with several people. Tanya realized she needed a night out, and this was the perfect sendoff to her anticipated vacation.
Tanya was asked to dance several more times over the course of the evening. Disappointment swelled within her as the party came to an end at two o’clock in the morning. She hadn’t seen Andrew once. If she had, she was unaware. It didn’t matter; she had plans to fly to Florida for a few days to spend time with her parents. Hopefully that would be enough time to get him out of her mind. And out of her heart.
Tanya reached into her clutch to pull out the driver’s business card so she could head home. She paused and decided to go outdoors on the balcony first, to enjoy some fresh air.
She couldn’t help but wonder why Andrew’s driver had picked her up if he hadn’t even attended the gala. What sort of game is Andrew playing? she wondered. Is he trying to win me over, only to leave me like he did Veronica, Isabelle, and the others?
She looked up at the beautiful, moonlit night sky. Stars twinkled overhead as if they were speaking to her.
He’s even warned me against him. But I can’t help how I feel when he’s around.
Shivering in the cold night air, she pulled her wrap more tightly around her shoulders and arms. It was time to go home. Andrew wasn’t going to show up.
Another shiver coursed through her as the wind whipped through the surrounding buildings. She shook, tugging at her wrap, just as a hand rested on the middle of her back, turning her around into strong arms. A gentleman in a black suit with a red, silk handkerchief towered over her.
She would know those hazel eyes anywhere.
A breath caught in her throat as he looked at her in a way she had never seen Andrew look at anyone before. There was a look of possession in his eyes, as he moved her across the patio with ease. Somehow, dancing with him felt natural as they moved in unison.
Tanya’s heartbeat sped up as she felt the hard muscles flexing in his arms as she rested her hands on them. He drew her body nearer to his own. Andrew removed her mask, and slightly lifted his own. He lowered his lips to hers, claiming them in a passionate kiss.
Tanya’s fists clenched, grabbing a portion of his jacket inside of them. The tips of his fingers curled in her hair, creating a warmth that warded off the freezing temps of the winter night.
Andrew bit down on her lower lip causing her to pull back slightly. Tanya felt a smile spread across his lips. He stopped kissing her and stared into her eyes.
“You have always been so beautiful to me. From the moment I first saw you at the elevator, you stood out. But never have you been more beautiful th
an you are at this moment.”
“What are we doing, Andrew? You’re my boss.”
“I don’t know what this is, Tanya. I just know I’m feeling something I’ve never felt before, and it’s driving me so damned crazy. When we’re working together, I want to hold you and make love to you. When you’re not around, I’m frustrated as hell because I want to be with you.”
“You have so many women chasing after you, Andrew. I’m not going to be another one of your one-night stands. What is it that you want from me?”
“Hell if I know. All I know is I want it. You’re like a breath of fresh air after being deprived of oxygen. You’re not like those other women. You don’t want anything from me, but you make me want everything from you.”
He claimed her mouth once more just to show her how true his last statement was.
Tanya didn’t know she could ever feel the way he made her feel. It was as if someone had heard her most intimate thoughts and brought them to life.
“When I saw you dancing all night long, I wanted to snatch you from every one of those men. They had no right to wrap you in their arms. You belong to me.”
“I don’t belong to you, Andrew!” she reprimanded.
“You will.”
“Where were you all night long?”
“Watching you.”
She was confused. Not once had she seen him.
“I didn’t want you to see me. There was no way I could hide my feelings from you or anybody else. And the way you look in that dress makes me want to create a thousand new ways to sin.”
Her sharp intake of breath sounded so sensual in the night air, even to her own ears.
He pressed his lips against hers once more. Something dangerous heated her within. Everything Andrew was making her feel in that moment was exquisite. Yet, it was so forbidden. How could she begin a relationship that would have nothing to offer?
It was impossible for him to give her the love she wanted. Trying to pursue anything would be unfair to the both of them, but she wanted him so badly and denying herself just this little taste was punishment enough.
She thought about the fairytale of Cinderella. If there could only be this one night, she would allow herself to have it and nurse her regrets in the morning. She was sure there were bound to be plenty of regrets. But that would be fine if she could only stay close to him a little while longer. Besides, she planned to retreat to her parents’ home and heal her heart.
Tanya knew she was fooling herself. Yet, she did not care. She lost herself in the moment and the kiss.
Andrew pulled back, “We’ve got to get out of here before people see us.” He grabbed her hand and began guiding her back inside.
Tanya paused. If she went with him, there was no turning back. She would have to live with the decision forever. Letting go of all her reservations, Tanya followed his lead as he led her to the penthouse suite.
As the door to the suite unlocked, Tanya reminded herself that she had one more chance to do the sensible thing and leave, but she didn’t. She needed to know what it felt like to be near him, to be wanted by him and to be possessed by his passion.
Tanya followed him through the living room, past the bar and into the bedroom as he held her hand tightly. The luxurious surroundings were nothing more than a blur as they moved quickly through the expansive space, but she didn’t really care. They couldn’t get to the bedroom fast enough.
Andrew turned Tanya around so her back was up against his body. He gently kissed the exposed skin on her neck as he slid down the spaghetti straps of her gown. He ran his finger across the top of her back until his hand reached the zipper. Slowly, he slid the zipper down until her dress dropped to the floor. Andrew turned Tanya back around so he could take in the sight of her matching red, lace lingerie and high heels.
Instead of feeling self-conscious, Tanya felt confident, knowing that he wanted her. Andrew pulled her in and effortlessly removed her strapless bra as Tanya stepped out of her shoes. She pushed him onto the bed and straddled him. Slowly, she unbuttoned his shirt while she kissed his smooth, hard chest and her hands caressed each chiseled muscle on his stomach.
When her hands reached the button of his pants, he grabbed her wrists to stop her. Andrew flipped Tanya onto her back and took the handkerchief out of his jacket pocket. He slid off his jacket and unbuttoned shirt as he sat upright in the bed, now straddling Tanya.
He grabbed Tanya’s wrists and secured them firmly by tying them to the slatted headboard with the handkerchief. Eagerly, Tanya anticipated what would happen next as she looked up into Andrew’s eyes. A devilish grin foretold that she wouldn’t regret her decision to be with him that night.
His mouth moved expertly across her breasts, arousing deep sensations that coursed through every nerve of her body. Taking his time, Andrew kissed her chest, stomach, around her naval and down to the hem of her red thong. Using his hand, he slid her panties down and off her legs. Applying light pressure to her clit with his tongue, Tanya exhaled to release all her inhibitions. She felt the pressure building up between her legs and cried out as the intense pleasure took hold of her body.
Andrew untied her wrists, slid off his remaining clothes and pushed his manhood into her core. Tanya wrapped her legs around him, encouraging him to go deeper. They moved as if dancing to a song that was playing just for them. His movements complemented hers as she welcomed his sensual thrusts with raised hips. Andrew moved quicker as he climaxed, and Tanya felt her second orgasm explode from within.
After a few minutes of silence, Andrew finally said, “I’m really glad you’re here.”
“So am I,” answered Tanya, as they both drifted off to sleep.
***
The sun trickled in through the curtains, signifying that morning had arrived with a new set of challenges. Andrew was spooning Tanya from behind, and even though she hated to admit it, she loved the way it felt to wake up next to him.
What did I do? What does this mean? How is he going to treat me now that we’ve slept together?
“Good morning,” whispered Andrew, as he kissed Tanya on the cheek.
“Good morning.”
“Should we order breakfast?”
Tanya looked at the clock and immediately sat up. “I have to go.”
“Where are you going?” Andrew sounded disappointed.
“Sarah and I are going to Florida to visit my parents,” said Tanya, as she rushed out of bed to pull on her dress.
“Okay. Calm down. I’ll have my driver meet us downstairs.”
“No! You can’t walk me downstairs. What if people see us? I am still trying to fix your reputation from the Isabelle scandal. And, I certainly don’t want to be on the cover of Top Gossip again.”
“Good point. Just wait until my driver tells me he’s in the lobby so we can minimize the chances of you being recognized.”
“Okay,” said Tanya.
Andrew made the call and Tanya waited, unsure of what to say to Andrew.
“He said he’ll be out front in a couple minutes. That gives us a minute to talk.”
Talk? He’s already going to tell me this isn’t going to work out? Shit! What a huge mistake!
Tanya rushed through the suite to the front door.
“Tanya, wait!” said Andrew abruptly as Tanya made her way out the door. “I need to let you know something before you go.”
“I’m sorry,” said Tanya. “I..It’s just…I have to go.”
“Tanya,” he reached out to her.
She escaped his touch, and quickly closed the door behind her.
She rushed downstairs and kept her head down as she walked through the lobby. The familiar black Range Rover was parked in front of the hotel. The driver quickly ushered her in and drove her to her sister’s building.
Tanya was uncertain what Andrew thought about her, but she knew she could never be an Isabelle, Tiffany, or Lexie. She wanted to believe she meant more to him than those other women, but with his track record, she re
ally doubted a true relationship would develop.
Who had she been kidding? They had nothing in common. The small-town girl from Indiana was no match for a man like Andrew Greene, the young, successful billionaire, who owned a large communications agency that could have any woman he wanted. Surely, she’d just be another notch on his belt, a joke in the breakroom, and at worst just a bad memory.
New York was making her behave in ways contrary to her character. For the first time, she was really grateful for the few days she planned to take off. Time in Florida with her parents would bring her back to her roots. She wanted to feel grounded once again.
Yes, that’s exactly what she would do. Leave the company phone and laptop behind and escape for some much-needed fun in the sun.
Chapter Six
Sitting beside her mother on the balcony of her parents’ retirement home in Boca Raton, Florida sipping mimosas, Tanya felt more relaxed than she had in a while. Yet, she knew the feeling was fleeting. She and Sarah had been there for the past three days, and they were leaving for the airport in a matter of hours to return to New York.
“Has he called since you left?” asked Tanya’s mother, Judith.
“Who?” Tanya asked, looking up from the hash browns she stirred around on her plate. Tanya had filled in Sarah on all of the details, but Tanya knew Sarah wouldn’t share that information with their mother.
“Brian. Who else? Has he called to apologize and ask forgiveness?”
Tanya shook her head and focused once more on eating.
“Nope, and I’m not expecting him to. It’s been nine months, and I want nothing to do with him.”
“Then why are you so down?” Judith pried, picking up a piece of avocado toast and setting it on Tanya’s plate.
“I’m not. I’ve just got a lot on my mind regarding work.”
“I’ve known you all of your life, and there’s something else bothering you. It isn’t work. Is it Sarah? Is she behaving up there?” her mother worried.
Tanya looked up at her mother and smiled a reassuring smile. “No, Mom, Sarah’s doing very well, just like she told you when we got in the other night. I’m proud of her.”
