TELL THE AUTHOR WHAT YOU THINK
What does the title of the novel refer to? To what characters does A Diamond in the Rough apply?
The novel addresses child beauty pageants. Some say that entering children in pageants is the wrong thing to do. Do you think there is exploitation in these pageants? Are you against them? Why or why not? What consequences occur as a result of little girls being taught how to be pretty in order to win a competition? What happens to girls that don’t win? What psychological and emotional effects do you think child beauty pageants have on children’s developing minds?
Did you at any point think that Oliver might have something to do with the kidnapping? Or suspect he was the person who really wanted to cause Sophie harm, and for what reasons? What were the hints you picked up as the novel progressed? Were you surprised—shocked—by the truth? Or did you have an inkling?
Consider the relationship between Sophie and Oliver. It is far from being perfect, but at the same time they need each other. How do the two differ from one another? How do they complement each other?
Do you think they should be together? As backgrounds are revealed and you come to learn more about who Sophie and Oliver are, does your attitude toward either or both of them change? What are your thoughts on the complexity and evolution of this relationship?
The author would love to read your thoughts on the questions above. Be sure to stop by http://elisamariehopkins.com/ and leave your responses to connect with the author.
