The Lost Lady

by Amelia Brown

She went to school and collected papers on the way. Books, Diplomas, and such that say she is a master of her craft from places like CSU: Sacramento.

She’s written her own books, because some stories really want to be told. They’re waiting for you patiently on Amazon. Her first novel, Ties of Fate, was a Herculean labor, while her second novel, The Beast of the Ruin, was a NaNoWriMo challenge. She won in more ways than one.

Her alter ego is as a receptionist at an Insurance Service where she spends her days when she’s not riding dragons, fighting dark forces and conquering worlds in the name of Love and Justice.

The Chronicles of Odde: The Lost Prince

The Kingdom of Stormhelm has an abundance of princes, seven to be precise. None is so loved as the youngest, Ayden. When still in his crib, Ayden was gifted with an extraordinary power. Luckily, other royals seems to be excluded from the gift, but for everyone else, it only takes one look for them to unconditionally love the young prince. His subjects love him so well that they would give him anything he asked for. Truly, it is not as good as it at first sounds, especially when his subjects want him to rule Stormhelm but Ayden wants nothing to do with the crown. If only he could get everyone else to believe that, especially his elder brother. The eldest prince, Alexander, has recently been cursed with the features of a wolf. Having only just taken control of the kingdom from his crusading father, Alex feels betrayed by the turn of events, and not just by the curse. He’s having to rely on his brothers, and has made Ayden the face of the crown, though using the wretched gift to deflect the court from his own problems has left Alexander with a bad taste in his mouth. With Stormhelm’s princes dispersed throughout all of Odde, what is left to stop an even greater disaster from befalling the kingdom?

It’s not all sunshine and happily-ever after for Kelly after being transported from our world to the Kingdom of Stormhelm on a continent they call, Odde. She’s found a job at the royal castle and is moving her way up the ranks. From kitchen girl to lady’s maid, she has her eye set on the royal chambers in hopes of finding something that will take her home. When finally able to move among royalty, Kelly almost blows it when she’s unaffected by Ayden’s gift. The incident catches the eyes of many, including the cursed prince. Unknowingly, Kelly befriends Alexander, unaware that magic doesn’t seem to work on her like it does on everyone else. Kelly’s desperate search for a way home is sidetracked when she sticks up for the Prince at a critical moment and earns the ire of a wondering wizard.

Now Kelly’s on a quest as the King’s champion, having to solve riddle after riddle to find the sorceress Zula Milburga and brake the Prince’s curse. If she succeeds she will be greatly rewards and Kelly sees it as her opportunity to find a way home. But even though she was a tough city girl, Kelly can’t make it through Odde without help. She has Alexander’s best friend and trusted Captain of the Guard, Reece Kaiden whose stoic wit gets she through some tough scrapes, but when he goes missing she realizes that he has some secrets of his own. The remaining Princes are called on to help aid her through the Quest, but not all is what it seems, and Kelly fears time is running out for all of them.

Will Kelly find the Sorceress and somehow break the curse? Where has Kaiden gone? Can she trust anyone when they all seem to have secrets of their own, herself included? The tasks before her will test her wit, but really, what’s up with all these riddles? They get harder with each task. She fears that the last one will be her undoing. Is she smart enough to outwit a Sorceress, or is it all a lost cause?

An excerpt from the next book in The Chronicles of Odde:

  The Lost Prince

“How precious, dear Queen! Another boy to grace the line of Stormhelm.” A tinkling laugh rang out as the Queen blinked in surprise, she was sure she had been alone a moment ago. “No need to fear fair Sophia, Queen of Stormhelm. This boy is special, a seventh son, and so my kin has sent me to bestow the traditional gift.” The short hair did not give away her fairy heritage more than her petite statue and the strange silvery eyes that looked from the baby, back to the Queen.

“You are a fairy then?” She asked hesitantly. Fairies were strange creatures, some took offense at the oddest things, and a mad fairy was a terrible thing to run into.

“Yes, yes … Fairy, I know, no wings in this size. But how troublesome they would be, wouldn’t they? Always bumping into things, very troublesome.” The fairy seemed distracted.

“Yes, I suppose they would be.” The Queen’s mind was reeling as she looked down at her son. Another gift, how extraordinary. Her first encounter had been with a very different looking creature. He had been tall, thin and rather sever as he gave Alexander, the crown prince, gifts to help him rule over Stormhelm with wisdom and grace.

“Now, what gift to give? That is the question. I know you let my predecessor pick for the first born, very wise of you that, but what to give little seven?” The fairy brought a glowing stick to her pursed lips, thinking and the Queen remembered that they sometimes carried a wand to channel their power. “What to choose?” She hummed to herself.

The Queen looked at her son lovingly and spoke wistfully. “He needs nothing grand, all I could wish for him is that he would be loved as I loved him, the first moment I laid eyes on him, the first moment I held him in my arms.”

“That’s perfect, your majesty.” The wand sprinkled glowing dust over the baby and the fairy continued. “Your wish is mine to grant and from this day forward all of his subject will love him as you do.” The wind picked up and with a flutter of the curtains the fairy was gone. Sophia picked up her son and looked him over. The only sign of the magic cast over him was a faint glowing in his eyes that anyone else might mistake for a happy twinkle. The Queen was in high spirits, and sang and danced the baby around in her arms. It was not until several hours later that the Queen realized what a mistake she had made.
