But as he slipped into the cool river, he felt the lingering touch of Honey Eater’s flesh against his. The flow of the current seemed to match the humming in his blood. He felt as alert as a wild animal, fully alive. His every sense was keen to the magic language of the night. Even though he had a long way to go, he had at last begun to feel that he had made the right choice. Among the Cheyenne, he had found not only his roots, but his place as a man.
“My name is Touch the Sky!” he said proudly to his cousin the river. “I am a Cheyenne!”
