Special Forces: Operation Alpha: Shadowing Milly (Kindle Worlds Novella)

But surprisingly, I wasn’t all that put off by that side of him. No matter what he’d done in the last twelve years, he was still the man I’d fallen in love with and had never been able to fall out of love with.
My fingers worried the little locket around my neck.
Plus, I worked in a branch of the government that was populated by “white hats” that regularly ordered men like Troy to do their bidding. They decided who lived and who died.
Which just pissed me off.
The elevator dinged and opened its doors, letting the occupants of the crowded car spill out into the front lobby of the building I worked in.
I felt the beginning of excitement.
“Speaking of which, how’s your assassin doing?”
I rolled my eyes at her. “He’s doing really well. Found a twelve-step group that meets twice a day in the basement of the New York Public Library. He says it’s really helping.”
Nastia laughed. “There’s a meeting for assassin’s anonymous. Are you serious?” It was my turn to snicker. “They call it the Recovery Assembly.”
“Do they make a patch?”
“Now you’re just being silly.” But I wondered if they did.
“Has he met your parents yet?”
I was stuck behind a gaggle of high school kids wading out the front doors of the State Department after their tour was over.
“They’ve known him for twenty years, Nastia.”
“I still say you’re mom is gonna eat him for lunch. She’s a freaking head shrinker and master interrogator.”
Oh brother…
“My mom is a psychologist, not a head shrinker. And you’re the one that blabbed about our night of debauchery at Sigma Alpha Beta.”
“I still think she has a hypno-ray hidden in her glasses.”
And that’s when he came into view, leaning up against the building across the street from me, his beautiful eyes locked on me, and his lips quirked up in a naughty grin.
“Sorry, sweetie…” I said breathily. “I’ve got to see a man about a bed.”
“I bet you do.”
I hung up on Nastia, slid my cell phone into my pocket and started across the street.
Troy took me into his arms and kissed me, slow and gentle, as if he had all the time in the world to.
Which he did—I wasn’t going anywhere.
When our lips separated he asked, “So, how was your day, dear.”
“I stopped a slap fight between two sixty-year-old congressmen and got to apologize once again for what my newest boss said over the weekend. And you?”
He hugged me to him as we walked down the street.
“I retired today… officially.”
Oh…
I knew he was looking into quitting. I just hadn’t realized how fast he was going with it.
“Sure you want to be unemployed in this economy?”
That’s me being cool, not wanting to influence his decision… though I really want him to quit.
“I’ve got a really good 401K,” he said, deadpan.
I turned in his arms and planted a quick kiss on his lips.
I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of doing that.
“Good,” I said, turning back around, his hand on my lower back. “I’d hate to be dating a slacker.”
He nodded gravely. “I used to bring my work home far too often. I think cutting back and relaxing will be good for me.”
More than anything else I wanted that to be true. But time would tell, and I would live with whatever he ended up doing just fine.
He was Troy.
My Troy.
And I’d be his forever and ever.
Now, if I could just get him not to keep a gun under his pillow at night.
