“How are you leaning?” I asked.
“I've decided to take it. I just wanted to tell you first.”
Tell me first, how sweet of you, I thought, the words sticky with sarcasm.
“How will this work? He can't be paying you enough to support us in Sedona. Cost of living there is crazy.”
“No. I'll get an apartment. Maybe in Camp Verde or Flagstaff.”
The next question seemed obvious to me. “Do you want to separate?”
“NO, Peter. Oh, dear god, no. I love you... but.” She paused. “There's more to it.” The excitement had left her voice.
“What is it?” I asked. Nothing in the world could have prepared me for what she said next.
“Oh, I really shouldn't have gone over there tonight.” She started to cry again. “This is so hard to say Peter. It would be much easier if you weren't such a good, understanding man.”
I was really beginning to get nervous. This whole conversation was beginning to veer into the absurd.
“Peter, I love you so very much but...”
Remember what I said about the word 'but.'
“But, I think I'm also in love with Scott.”

About the Author
I have been writing stories for about 15 years, mostly science fiction and fantasy. I came up with the idea for this story on a recent trip to Sin City. I was playing blackjack when I noticed a rather attractive couple playing roulette. Another man approached and started playing and they all seemed chummy. They might have all been friends, I took the situation in a different direction. Nothing else in this story even approaches reality. I do appreciate feedback and I can be reached at seangeist@outlook.com. You can also follow me on twitter @SeanGeist.
