CHAPTER 27 Jail

The Sinaia jail was a makeshift structure, a commercial business during the communist regime, but converted some years after the '89 Romanian Revolution. All the building's windows were now covered with iron grating to confine prisoners. Alex Eidyn would become their most infamous.

When the police brought Alex through the backdoor of the precinct, all the employees scattered like rodents from a wildcat. Even police officers kept their distance. The police chief, Captain Mariusz, eventually found someone willing to photograph and fingerprint her. Alex acquiesced to a pat-down. They took her cellphone, house keys, and other assorted items from her pockets. When they tried to strip search her, she said, "Try it, if you have no wish to live."

  They backed off.

"La ce oră este micul dejun?" she asked.

All the prison cells in the police station were not barred. Some were normal rooms with reinforced doors and iron mesh over the windows, sealed from the outside to prevent escape. But they did have one barred area where they could keep watch over the most violent criminals before they were transferred to Bucharest or perhaps Codlea prison. This is where they put Alex for overnight observation. When she asked them to call, not her parents, but Father Zosimos, they said that she'd be permitted no visitors until morning. The police chief himself came to get a look at her, and with the violent animal, which they'd been told she was, safely behind bars, many of the officers came to get a peek at a vampire, although truth be known, few believed after seeing her that she really was one.

"She's cute and totally wimpish," said a young patrolman. "A good breeze would blow her over."

Her cell had a single cot and a toilette without a door where she could relieve herself in semi-privacy, although someone was always outside trying to get a peek at her in this compromising position.

Later that night, Alex lay down on the cot and tried to get a little sleep. She worried. Not only was she not going to Oxford, now she was a convict. How long would this descent into degradation last? Undoubtedly they had enough evidence from the murder scene to put her away for as long as they wished. What was the penalty for being a vampire? Could they prove it?

She'd just dozed and was again experiencing troubling dreams when two whispering men outside her cell woke her. The lights had been turned off except for a nightlight in the hall, but she still recognized one as the night guard. The other was a policeman with a sidearm, nightstick, and handcuffs on his belt. He was a great brute of man, hairy and muscled like an Olympic weightlifter, and reminded her a little of the vampire she'd turned back that night in Emelia's and Rutfen's home. Curiously, he wanted the night watchman to let him into her cell. This, Alex greatly feared. Though she was strong, this man would not be someone she could manhandle, she thought.

Finally, the guard unlocked her cell door, the brute entered, and the guard locked it behind him.

Alex set up and put her bare feet on the floor. "What are you after?" she asked.

It was obvious what he had come for, and equally obvious that he wasn't used to being refused. He walked up in front of her and unbuttoned his fly.

Alex had felt a certain sense of security behind bars, curiously, and thought that within the control of the police, no attempt on her life would be tolerated. Yet here in the dark, she would be tried again. She rose and retreated to the corner of the room. The man followed. He came up close to her, put his huge hairy hand on her head and shoved her down to her knees. Alex leaned forward like she was going to accommodate him, reached up with her hand as if to take control of his now-erect phallus, but instead grabbed him by the testicles and squeezed. As he groaned in agony and fell forward over her, Alex slipped between his legs, rose up behind him, and shoved his head into the wall with all her might. With her left hand, she brought his huge phallus down between his legs and pulled it as far up the crack as of his ass as she could. At the same time, she grabbed him by the hair of the head with her right hand and bent it back as far as it would go. She could smell the fresh blood from his forehead, which had split from the impact with the corner of the window frame. She hit him in the back of his knee with her knee, and his legs doubled up. He slumped to the floor.

Alex then sank her teeth into his neck and started sucking. She gorged herself until she felt him weaken, then slump into the corner. She knew he wasn't dead. She had enough experience feeding that she realized this man would live but was in a critically weakened condition. She handcuffed him and removed his handgun, which she slid out under the cell bars into the hall. No sense in keeping it herself and frightening the guard into shooting her. Although it might not actually be that big of a deal.

Alex was glad this had happened, now that it was over. She'd had a chance to feed, and what a banquet this man had been. She'd not have to feed again for weeks. She dragged him to the front of the cell where she left him lying on his side with his hands cuffed behind his back and his deflated penis hanging out his open pants. Alex sat on her cot and waited.

A few minutes later, the nightwatchman came to check, saw the unconscious policeman sprawled on the cell floor and left at a run back down the hall. He returned a few minutes later with reinforcements. "Have you killed him?" he asked

"He'll live," she replied. "But you might want to get him out of here. I'm not very fond of him anymore."
