Panting, I was close to coming. “Give it to me, Hunter.”

“No, baby. First, we make you come with my fingers, then my mouth, then my cock.” He lapped at my nipple. I whimpered, so close I could taste the orgasm on my tongue.

And then my body exploded. My hips convulsed as I came, twisting and rocking with his rhythm. Gazing at me intensely, Hunter kissed me the whole time, devouring the tremors running through my body. The hunger in his face was intense.

When I stopped shivering, he ran his fingers through my hair. “All of our problems aren’t over.”

Breathless, I gave him a weak smile. “What?”

“We still have to deal with…York and Mrs. Ellen.”

I shook my head. “I’m not in the mood to talk about York or Mom right now.”

He nipped at my mouth. “No?”

“No.” I licked my lips. “I’m more interested in taking care of you.”

Lust coated his voice. “And how would you do that, Zuzu?”

“You make that nickname sound so nasty.”

  He looked pleased with himself.

“And why are you thinking about our family while playing with my pussy?” I asked.

“Because, when I’m playing with your pussy, I don’t ever want to stop, and then my head goes off on a path, where…”

  I blinked. “Where what?”

“I want to prevent anything and anybody of getting in the way of us ending.”

  “It won’t happen.”

  “We should talk to them.”

“We will, but…” Sighing, I rolled my eyes. “I don’t give a damn, if they like it or not. I’m in love with you.”

  He grunted.

  “Thoughts?”

  “I agree.”

“Yeah right, Hunter. You’re Mr. Perfect Son.”

“I wouldn’t be, if they stood in our way.”

“They won’t.” I kissed him. “We’re safe. Our love is safe.”

  “It better be.”

  I tried to sit up.

  “Stay down,” he whispered.

“I want to take care of you, Hunter.”

“But I’m not done taking care of you.” His mouth found my poor sensitive clit.

His tongue flicked over my most sensitive spot, teasing me with the unholy combination of his soft tongue. Throw in the steady suction of his mouth and it was nearly enough to shove me over the edge. Then his finger pressed deep within, finding that lovely spot on my inside wall.

  “Hunter!” I shuddered.

He kept up a steady pressure, rubbing back and forth as his tongue drove me slowly insane.

Then Hunter pulled away long enough to say, “Play with those nipples.”

Moaning, I reached up, taking my nipples and rolling them between my fingers, pinching and tugging like he’d done before.

I’d just come, but there was only so much self-control any woman could have. That tongue licked and lapped, dipped and rubbed across my G-spot. And my body reacted like I’d never had sex in my life.

“Damn it, Hunter.” I tenderly hit his muscular shoulder. “I want to feel you inside me.”

He slipped up my body. “You like that?”

  “Love it.”

  “Why?”

“Because no other could ever make me feel like you do.”

Grunting, Hunter slid his cock up and down my clit over and over. Then he centered that thick mushroomed tip on my opening and pushed it in, dragging a loud moan out of me.

Sliding deeper, he whispered, “I’ll always be here for you.”

“I know.” I kissed him as his cock hit bottom, and then slowly worked in and out of me, stroking my whole body.

  He fucked me to oblivion.

And we fell asleep in each other’s arms exhausted, fully satiated.

But the question about York and Mom kept me up.

He has a point. We should get that part over with. But when would we do it and how?

Hunter had just buried two of his closest friends. Although he hadn’t made a big deal of it, I knew it was hurting him inside.

  How can I heal him?

And then a plan started to come together in my mind. I didn’t know if he would appreciate it or not, but what I’d learned in these past weeks was that running and hiding would get us nowhere.

In the end, love always numbed away the pain.

  Reunited

  Hunter

Days passed in our tiny bay.

I introduced her to some of the things I loved about the island’s culture. Paw-paw with a slice of green lime, red bananas, purple star-apples, Blue Mountain coffee, and Jamaican marmalade that was black and super sweet.

There were so many things I loved about Jamaica that I wanted to share with her.

We hiked a few times. Zola was the perfect companion. I showed her trap-door spiders, a mother crocodile carrying her young in her mouth, and the longest giant centipede we’d ever seen. And she asked question after question, getting me excited to talk about everything more—there were the poisons of the forest and the healing properties of tropical herbs. There were the old tales that Baptiste had told me about the bay, and the things that I’d read.

The whole time, she laughed and faced those daily adventures with me, and the whole time, I healed a little more.

We spent many afternoons lying in bed with each other.

It was all perfect but for the few minutes when I remembered the past. Sometimes, no matter how I tried to look forward to our future, my head remained behind, lagging and not ready.

On the fourth day of our stay, I woke up at dawn and silently slipped out of bed.

I have to swim and get my mind together.

Clearing my head was the only reason I would leave the room. Zola lay under the covers so soft and warm. It would be another two hours before she woke up. I had to get it together before we started our day.

Baptiste and Nakita are dead. Get over it. There’s nothing you can do anymore.

The staff was off that day, so I didn’t put on any clothes. Instead, I walked off to my own private entrance of the bay.

Outside, it was quiet besides the subtle chatter of birds. The sea flowed smooth and quiet as the sun rose, painting the water. Small pink waves licked white sand. It was cold, but I wandered naked along the edge of the sea. Memories of last night’s lovemaking filled my head.

My heart remained calm and utterly captured, but my gut said that there was so much that still wasn’t solved.

What the hell will York say?

I walked slowly into the water. It was chilly, but eventually my body got used to the temperature. For some reason, as soon as the waves swarmed around me, I knew everything would be okay.

They’ll understand. Why did I think they wouldn’t?

Perhaps I’d just learned something more about love. One thing I knew was that I’d had no idea about love weeks ago. I knew hate and death, pain and torture, but love had left me clueless.

If they love me—us—they’ll accept this.

I took my feet off the bottom and sank, shutting my eyes. The cold water swallowed me.

Zola whispered, “I want to feel you inside of me.”

  “You like that?”

  “Love it.”

  “Why?” I asked.

“Because no other could ever make me feel like you do.”

I rose and stood within the water. It hit me at my waist.

Who am I kidding anyway? There were no alternatives to Zola and me.

A car sounded off in the distance.

Although it was early for traffic, a few fishermen liked to get a jumpstart to a good fishing day.

I turned my attention back to the ocean.

The bay spread out like a liquid mirror. Under the water, multicolored fish swam in schools dipping along rainbow coral. I dove back in and swam several yards, pacing myself and trying to burn the worst moments of these weeks out of my head.

  A good hour later, I
headed back. There was still no one in sight. The sun had turned hot, which helped with the chill of the sea.

When I returned, there was an unrecognizable car in the front.

Who’s that? I should’ve brought my gun out.

I took my towel off my shoulder and wrapped it around me. My heartbeats picked up, even though I tried to calm myself.

I grabbed the axe from the side of my house and entered. The savory aroma of roasted duck hit me first. Next, soft feminine laughter came from the kitchen. I set the axe down by the sofa and swallowed.

  I knew that sound anywhere.

  Mrs. Ellen is here?

Behind me, noise came down the hallway.

  I turned around.

York appeared with a beer in his hand. “Do you always swim naked, man? That was not what I was trying to see this morning.”

  “What are you doing here?”

“Zuzu called.” He stopped in front of me, took a long swig of beer, and eyed the axe. “What’s that for?”

“I didn’t know who was here.”

“Fuck, man. I’m glad you didn’t chop my head off.”

  My head spun.

Zola had them come? What else had she done?

I was sure York knew what was going on. The whole time he drank that beer, he gazed at me through the side of his eyes as if to show an aggressive stance. It was something we would do to her boyfriends.

I crossed my arms across my chest. “What?”

York finished his beer. “So…Zuzu and you? You look nervous.” He frowned. “For some reason, you looking nervous makes me look nervous.”

“Zuzu and I are…a new situation that I’m wrapping my head around.”

  “You look scared shitless.”

“This is a first for me.”

York kept that serious expression on his face. “Let’s face it, Hunter. What am I really going to say? I can’t beat you up.”

I leaned against the wall. “That’s not the point. I consider you my brother.”

“Me too. That never ends.” York gestured to the kitchen. “But…Hunter, you’re not the romantic type. I’ve never seen you with anyone.”

“I was waiting for the right one.”

  “And that’s Zuzu?”

  “You know it is.”

York nodded and then his serious expression broke as he began laughing.

I held out my hands. “What? Why are you laughing?”

“Dude, relax.” York patted my shoulder. “I’m just fucking with you. It’s not like your crush has been a secret or anything.”

  “What?”

“And Zuzu has been writing your name in her diary for years.” York finished his beer. “I just wondered if you two were going to both fuck it up and get us all involved in a bunch of drama. You know?”

“No, I don’t know. You knew I cared for her.”

  “It was obvious.”

  “When?”

“Maybe it was when you broke her ex-boyfriend’s arm or punched the football player or that one guy that you waved a gun at on her first date. You haven’t been incognito at all. Mom and I joke about you two. Plus, anyone could tell, if they paid attention. You sit in a room and you’re relaxed. Zuzu comes in, and you can’t keep your eyes off her.”

I let out an exasperated breath. “Why didn’t you say anything?”

  “Why didn’t you say anything?”

  I had no answer.

“Yeah.” York nodded. “We’re brothers, but we don’t sit and share our feelings like that. By the way, thank you for protecting her from…your friend.”

I sighed again. “How much do you know?”

  “Everything.”

  “Look. I should—”

  York hugged me. “We understand.”

  I stood there, speechless.

“Mom cried the whole flight here,” York whispered. “She was worried about you and what you had to do for your friend.”

  “It’s done.”

York let me go. “Take some time, man. You’ve been through a lot of shit in your life, and you never properly dealt with it.”

  “I went to a doctor.”

“Yeah, well you haven’t mourned your doctor either.”

  “People die.”

“And people are allowed to feel bad about it for a long time.” York looked at his beer. “And why don’t you put some clothes on, man? I’m tired of all the wet muscles in my face.”

“Hey, you’re the one hugging me.”

York walked off. “And get some better beer. This artisan expensive shit taste like urine and juice.”

“Get your own beer.” I made it to the bedroom. My head spun, but I kept on walking.

I wanted to run away. Everything felt so good.

I wanted to hide, but I wouldn’t let myself. I would deal with everything in front of me. York had taken it well. Mrs. Ellen should too. Regardless, I wouldn’t be scared. I wouldn’t cower from anymore fears of the heart.

  What made her call them?

When I entered the bathroom, I realized that all my belongings had been put away and in the bathroom. My toothbrush and shaving items were neatly arranged at one end of the glass shelf. At the other end was Zola’s toothbrush and makeup bag.

For some reason, the whole sight made me more confident in us. Like the fact that she knew I would love our toothbrushes together symbolized our success in the future.

Jesus. Hades. She fucking pussy whipped me. That’s what’s going on right now.

Either way, I felt lucky to have her. Gratitude seeped down to my bones. There would be no way I would let her slip from my fingers. I would do anything and more to keep her happy and satisfied.

After I showered, I dressed in a white button-down shirt and dark blue slacks.

“You look nice.” Zola appeared in the doorway wearing a thin white dress. I could imagine the material tearing within my fingers by this evening.

So overcome with emotion, I walked over and put my arm around her. Words hung on the tip of my tongue, but I couldn’t let them go.

“Are you mad at me?” she asked. “I was hoping you wouldn’t be…I don’t know.”

“I’m glad you called them.” I pulled her closer to me, running my fingers through her hair. “What made you do it?”

“I don’t want any reason for us to not start off happy. I don’t want any worries or anything as we begin.”

“There won’t be,” I whispered. “I won’t allow it anymore.”

“They know, Hunter.” She formed her lips into a smile. “Mom knows. York knows. Everyone else will know in my family too.”

  Nodding, I swallowed. “Good.”

  “No one cares.”

“It was all in my head?”

“Well…” She gave me a weak smile. “Mom is still processing it, although she has now discussed what our grandkids would look like. But I’m sure she’s just saying that to mess with me.”

I studied her face, thinking about the possibility of us having children. “I never knew that this could be my future.”

  “Kids?”

“Everything. I never even tried to think of a future with someone. Marriage and children were not something I’d considered.”

  She blinked. “Now?”

“Now, I want it all with you.” I lowered to my knees and held her hand. “Baby, I don’t have a ring right now, but damn it, I want you to know in this moment that I couldn’t see any new day without you.”

  She gasped. “Hunter?”

  “Marry me.”

She parted her lips. “Are you serious? I mean, I—”

“I want you to be my wife. No one else could ever be Mrs. Jasper. No one.”

Her eyes watered as her fingers shook in my hand.

  “Marry me?”

  “Yes.”

Still on my knees, I pulled her in, burying my face along her stomach. “Thank you, Zola. Thank you for saving me.”

She lowered down to the ground, and we held each other for s
everal minutes. Neither questioned the other. I didn’t know when we would get married or where. The only plan I had for today was to buy the biggest diamond ring I could find in Jamaica.

“Hunter!” Mrs. Ellen yelled from the kitchen. “Zuzu, the food is done! Y’all little honeymooners come on out now.”

  York laughed in the background.

Zola rolled her eyes. “They’re both going to joke on us for the rest of their trip.”

“Good.” I smiled. “I need to laugh.”

We rose together as if in sync with the other.

She took my hand and together, we went out onto the terrace where the table had been filled like a Thanksgiving feast. Mrs. Ellen spotted me, and like York, she pulled me into a surprise hug, keeping me in that hold for a long time.

And I knew that everything would be okay. That there was nothing to worry about with York or Mrs. Ellen. Nothing had ever stood in my way with Zola, but me. I’d been the one to deny my own heart.

But, from now on, I would race toward my destiny.

I would always rush to her.
