“I’ll call you tonight,” Braden said with a wave. “Just in case you plan on staying up past six.”
While Leah sat at a table, balancing her calico kitten and a form, the young lady with the oolong tea beckoned Marjorie over. “You said only some of the kittens were available for adoption?”
Marjorie stared at the calico snuggling up to Leah and thought of the many nights when Monkey Business had done the same with her. If she was being a professional businesswoman, the answer would be all kittens were equal and all of them were up for adoption.
“Every one of the kittens is available,” Marjorie said, “except for the calico and the chocolate Persian. His name’s Monkey Business and he’s a permanent resident here.”
While the customer’s hopeful expression collapsed, Marjorie waggled her foot at Marmalade, who obliged by running over. “This little one is eager to be adopted into a forever home. He’s the most inquisitive kitten I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting and will make a great companion.”
“He’s a real cutie,” the customer agreed, her broken heart mending with astonishing haste.
Meanwhile, Monkey Business trotted over to the table and sat next to Sweet Callie. Marjorie couldn’t be sure, but she hoped both were revelling in the satisfaction of finding forever homes.
