His mouth dropped open. “You saw for yourself what she was doin’ and you’re damn right I’m goin’ to always defend myself. That bitch has tried to shoot and stab me before. She gangsta like that and some women you have to handle in a different way. She’ll be all right, and when you keep gettin’ your head bumped enough, you’ll eventually learn somethin’.”
I couldn’t help but to shake my head. “If you’ve continued in a relationship with a woman who has tried to shoot or stab you, then you’re getting what you deserve. The wake-up call obviously came awhile back, but too bad you missed it. Trying to cut her off now may not work in your favor, and head bumping will get you nowhere but back in jail. I hope you know that.”
Roc didn’t respond, so I walked out the door. He shouted my name as I made my way down the hallway.
I turned with an attitude. “Yes.”
“Being with me will not be easy,” he said, now standing in the doorway to his bedroom. “What you see is what you get. I’m not goin’ to sugarcoat nothin’ and you need to decide if you’re wit’ me or not. I can’t have no woman who thinks she can walk in and out of my life when she gets ready. I need one who knows my situation and accepts it. As you can see, much of this shit is beyond my control. I’m tryin’ to get rid of the bad seeds, but they won’t disappear as quickly as you want them to. Think about what I’m sayin’ and get at me when you’ve come to grips with the way I do things.”
“Do your bad seeds include Vanessa and being in the drug game? I just want to be sure that’s what you’re referring to.”
“Exactly. Just don’t expect everything to change overnight. In due time, they will. For now, all you need to know is I’m not sexually involved with Vanessa and I’ve had no part in sellin’ drugs. I hope you’re at least happy about that.”
I shrugged, somewhat knowing that Roc was just saying what he did to please me. If anything, I had hoped being in prison had taught him a lesson. The verdict was still out, so, “Possibly happy,” was all I could say. In no way did I want to leave Roc under these conditions, but what had happened today left a sour taste in my mouth. I closed the door behind me, and as I made my way to my car, I noticed my passenger’s side window was cracked. “B.I.T.” was spray-painted on my door. I let out a deep sigh, as the truth was now staring me in the face. Roc was home, and I had a feeling that it wasn’t such a good thing after all.
Chapter 3
I talked to Roc every day for almost two weeks straight, but had not been back to his place. He hadn’t come to mine either, but since we had planned to have a picnic, he was on his way over with his son. He was upset about what had happened to my car, but not as much as I was. He promised to give me the money to pay for the damages, but I knew where his money was coming from. According to Roc, he was no longer “hands on,” but his condo and any money that he had was given to him by Ronnie. This concerned me, and I had plans to see what I could do to help him earn his own money. I had already contacted my insurance company to have my car taken care of. The window was fixed right away, but I had to wait another week for the paint job to get done. Until then, I drove around in a rental, and kept my car in the garage. What a stupid thing for a woman to do, and, at this point, I had very little sympathy for Vanessa. A fool she was, and along with her pulling my hair, I considered this strike number two for her. There was only so much one could tolerate, and my patience with her was wearing thin.
It was a Saturday afternoon, and I had put together some ham and cheese sandwiches, chips, fruit cups, and cupcakes for us to eat on our picnic at Forest Park. I made Chassidy and Li’l Roc some frozen Mickey Mouse Popsicles and hoped they wouldn’t melt too quickly. For entertainment, I dusted off two fishing rods in my garage that Latrel and Reggie used to go fishing. I bought Chassidy a smaller one and picked up some bait while I was at the store. I figured we could do a little fishing, just to have some extra fun. It was about eighty-five degrees outside, so I dressed Chassidy in a pair of jean shorts and a pink T-shirt. Pink and white Nike tennis shoes covered her feet, and her hair was sleeked back into a neat ponytail, tied with a pink ribbon. I guess I was being biased, but she was quite adorable. I wore my blue jean stretch capris, a plumcolored T-shirt, and tennis shoes. My hair was also in a ponytail, because I wanted to be comfortable.
I stood in the kitchen, making sure I had everything packed and ready to go. All I was missing was the insect repellant, so I hurried to the closet to get it. Chassidy followed me, trying to keep up. She was such a happy child, and giggled as she chased me.
“Girl, you can’t keep up with me,” I teased. When the doorbell rang, I couldn’t keep up with her. She rushed to the door, but I was right behind her. Roc had a new steel gray Lincoln Navigator, and I could see it parked in the driveway. I opened the door, inviting him and his son to come inside. The first thing he did was ease his arm around my waist and peck my lips.
“What’s up, sexy? You know anytime a woman can dress down and still look good, she one bad mamma jamma.”
His compliments always made me blush, and seeing him period genuinely excited me. He reached for Chassidy, picking her up and kissing her cheeks.
“Muah,” he said. “Hey, beautiful. Girl, you know you lookin’ more and more like yo’ daddy every day.”
I cut my eyes, as sometimes the truth was hard to admit. Li’l Roc was still standing by the door, so I reached out my hand to his.
“Hi,” I politely said. He wouldn’t smile at all, but did reach out to shake my hand. “You are so adorable. How old are you?”
“Five,” he responded, but pouted right after.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
“Leave his knucklehead ass alone,” Roc said. “I had to get in his shit in the car and now he got an attitude.”
I closed the door. “Well, come on inside and let’s go in the kitchen. I’m just about finished getting everything together and we can leave in about ten minutes.”
Roc carried Chassidy in his arms, tickling her and making her laugh. Li’l Roc followed us, and when we got to the kitchen, I offered him a Popsicle. He declined, moving his head from side to side, still pouting.
Roc commented again. “When somebody offer you somethin’, what are you supposed to say?”
“No, thank you,” Li’l Roc replied, then slightly rolled his eyes. Roc put Chassidy down, then stepped up to Li’l Roc, poking at his chest. I definitely knew where that came from.
“You need to get yo’ shit together. Do you remember what I told you in the car?”
Li’l Roc nodded and listened. “I meant what I said and I will not repeat myself again. Get it together, all right?”
Li’l Roc nodded again, this time without pouting. Roc pointed to Chassidy. “You know who that is right there?” Li’l Roc shrugged his shoulders. “That’s your li’l sister, Chassidy. She got it goin’ on like you and me, don’t she?” He nodded again. “Always have her back, ’cause that’s blood right there. The same blood runnin’ through your veins runnin’ through hers.” Roc crossed his fingers. “Tight like this, okay?”
Li’l Roc crossed his fingers and repeated what Roc said. “Tight like this.”
Roc rubbed the top of his son’s head. “Now, that’s what’s up.”
It appeared that everyone was back on the same page, so I gave Roc the picnic basket, blankets, and pillows to put in his truck. As we stood outside loading up, he looked at me like I was crazy with the fishing poles in my hands.
“Where in the hell are you goin’ with those?”
“We’re going fishing. Have you never been fishing before?”
“If I have, I can’t remember. But I thought we were supposed to be havin’ a picnic.”
“We’re doing that too, but we can also catch fish as well.”
“Are you cookin’ the fish later on tonight?”
“Nope.”
“Then what’s the purpose?”
“The purpose is to have fun with the kids and with you.”

p; Roc cut his eyes at me, and after the kids were strapped into their safety seats, we left. Roc had no concern for our ears and he blasted the music as high as it could go. I looked back, seeing Li’l Roc bobbing his head and Chassidy, with a frown, covering her ears. Definitely, like mother, like daughter; like father, like son.
“Now, you already know what I’m going to say. I think you raise the volume on that thing just to irritate me.”
Roc smiled and bobbed his head, ignoring my hint. A few minutes later, he turned down the volume.
“Before I forget, look in the glove compartment and get that envelope,” he said.
I reached for the envelope in the glove compartment, noticing several hundred dollar bills inside.
“That’s for your car. Sorry about that, but payback gon’ be a muthafucka.”
I put the envelope back into the glove compartment and closed it. “My car is already taken care of. Thanks, though, and I appreciate your kindness. I’m almost afraid to ask, but have you talked to her since then?”
“We don’t talk anymore. All we do is cuss each other out. Yes, I’ve had the pleasure of cursin’ her ass out because she came over again, tryin’ to bring mo’ noise. This time, I didn’t open my door, so she had to handle her business on the other side.”
“Well, that was a smart move. Just be careful and I know I don’t have to tell you to watch your back. She has some serious issues, and if you’ve been dealing with that mess for . . . how many years?”
“Seven. And, yes, we have always had a rocky relationship, but don’t ask me why. All love one minute, hate the next.”
“I guess it be like that sometimes.”
As much as I wanted to know about Roc’s relationship with Vanessa, I really didn’t care about it. I already knew what it consisted of, and the answer was a whole lot of disrespect. Shame on both of them for being in a battle for love for that damn long.
When we arrived at Forest Park, I could see a cozy spot from a distance. It was underneath a shaded tree on a slight hill. A few feet away was a pond where several people were already fishing. The kids had plenty of room to run around and play. I predicted we would have a decent time.
Roc carried most of our things to the designated spot and I held the kids’ hands. He laid the blankets on the green grass and dropped the pillows on top. I blew up two huge balls for the kids, using an air pump. They couldn’t wait to play with them, and when I suggested eating first, they refused. I sat on the blanket next to Roc, who was already laid back on one of the pillows. A cool breeze was coming in, making it so relaxing.
“Aren’t you going to eat something?” I asked Roc. I pulled out the ham and cheese sandwiches, showing them to him.
“What is that? Ham and cheese? No, thank you. Had enough of that shit in jail. What else you got in there?”
I pulled out the chips, fruit cups, and cupcakes. “Okay, which one?”
Roc turned to his side, resting on his elbow. He reached for the fruit cups and a small bag of Doritos.
“Thanks,” he said with a smile. He looked so sexy in a dark blue wife beater, cargo shorts, and Jordans on his feet. I wasn’t the only one who could dress so simply, yet look spectacular. All day I had wanted to kiss him, just to let him know that I wasn’t bitter about what had happened at his place. I took the opportunity, and leaned in to give him a lengthy, juicy kiss. He reached up to the back of my head, holding it steady and softly rubbing my hair. My eyes closed, as kissing him always seemed so perfect. Chassidy interrupted our kiss when she came over and reached for a cupcake. I opened the package for her, and gave Li’l Roc a bag of chips he was reaching for. When I asked if either of them wanted a Popsicle, both of them said no.
“Why doesn’t anyone want a Popsicle? It’s hot and I thought they would help to cool us down.”
“Shit, then give me one,” Roc said, looking down at his goods. “I definitely need somethin’ to calm me down right about now.”
He wasn’t the only one, so I gave him one of the Popsicles and kept one for myself. The kids ran off to play again while Roc and I slurped on each other’s Popsicles. “Remind me to thank you later,” he said. “This pic-nookie was an excellent idea, and who would have thought I’d be havin’ this much fun?”
The Popsicle juices were dripping from his lips, and you better believe I was there to suck them. He was working my lips and Popsicle too, and we couldn’t help but laugh.
“You know if the kids weren’t with us, I would lay you back on this blanket and fuck somethin’ up. Feel how hard my dick is right now.”
“I don’t have to feel it. I can already see it through your shorts. Calm down, baby, and you know I’m going to take care of that real soon.”
“Soon? Shit I was hopin’ you’d take care of it for me now. Let me play with those titties, touch your pussy or somethin’. That will calm me down real quick.”
I watched Chassidy and Li’l Roc continuing to play with their balls and chasing each other. They seemed to be having a good time, so I responded to Roc’s suggestion. “Not out here, okay? There will be so much time left for that later.”
Roc moved over, straddling his legs behind me as we both sat up. He wrapped his arms around my waist and nibbled on my ear.
“Be creative, Roc,” he said, repeating those words I’d said before. “Work with what space—”
I turned my head to the side. “You are not going to let me forget what I said to you about being creative, are you?”
“Nope. And I’m goin’ to live by those words, especially when we’re together.”
His hands eased up my shirt, touching my lace bra. My nipples had already become erect, and when he softly shaved his hands across them, I could feel my breasts tighten.
“See,” Roc whispered in my ear. “This looks totally innocent, but brings great pleasure. Keep smilin’ and lookin’ at the kids playin’ and they will pay us no mind.”
I couldn’t believe I was letting Roc massage my breasts and get me so aroused in public. There weren’t too many people around, but it did feel pretty awkward. His touch felt good, too, so I couldn’t complain about that.
Roc placed his lips on my earlobe and whispered in my ear, “Damn, these titties soft as hell. I wanna suck them, though. Can I?”
My body was tingling all over, but sucking my breasts would be going too far. “No, Roc. This is as far as we go and this is quite enough.”
“Aww, you ain’t no fun. All you gotta do is throw these covers over your head for a minute or two. We can pretend that we’re wrestlin’ or playin’ around.”
My eyes were still focused on the kids, but my mind was elsewhere. “No,” I laughed. “Absolutely not. And is this your idea of a pic-nookie?”
Roc lowered his hands from my breasts, causing the tingling to go away. “Exactly. Now answer this question for me. Are you wet yet?”
I turned my head to the side as he rested his chin on my shoulder. “What? What’s it to you?”
“I know you are, just by how hard those nipples were. Keep on grinnin’ and watchin’ the kids. Sit Indian style, and I’m gon’ bend my knees. Pull up the blanket, and lay it across your lap.”
“You got this all figured out, don’t you?”
Roc didn’t answer, just bent his knees and remained straddled behind me. I reached for the blanket, covering myself from the waist down. Roc touched my hips, and then eased his hands underneath the blanket. He popped the buttons on my capris and his fingers dipped into my wetness. His touch always made me gasp, so I did.
“I knew you would like it,” he whispered in my ear. “Chill and . . . And how in the hell did you get this wet so fast? Damn, baby, this shit feels too good.”
My eyes fluttered and all I could do was suck in my bottom lip. “Please don’t talk anymore. You will make me jump on top of you soooo quick and fuck your brains out.”
“That’s what I want you to do.”
“But I can’t,” I whined.
“Then chill and j
ust let me finish.”
I took a few deep breaths, as Roc’s fingers were turning circles inside of me. I mean, he was working it like a professional, flicking his fingers fast and causing my insides to feel as if they were being tickled. We could both hear what his actions were doing to my insides and my juices were causing a stir.
“I love the sound of that,” Roc whispered again. “Don’t you hear it?”
I nodded, squeezing my stomach tightly and tightening my legs. I looked at the kids coming our way and dropped my head. “Hurry, baby, they’re coming.”
“So are you,” Roc said, but my come didn’t get there fast enough. With the kids only a few feet away, Roc pulled out, leaving me high and dry . . . well, actually, wet as ever.
Chassidy jumped into my lap and Roc stood up. “I’ma go over here to this bathroom,” he said, smiling. “I’ll be right back.” He looked at Li’l Roc. “Man, do you need to go to the bathroom?”
Li’l Roc said no and stayed with me and Chassidy. They reached for the cupcakes, allowing me time to get up and button my capris. I felt very sticky between my legs, and when I got Roc home, I intended to make him pay for what he’d done.
Roc was in the bathroom for several minutes, and when he came back I didn’t even have to ask what took him so long. “That was a good one,” he whispered to me as I was trying to untangle the string on the fishing rod. “I let go of some mad-ass sperm and you should have seen it.”
“Uh, thanks for sharing with your nasty self. You are so nasty and I can’t believe I let you do that to me.”
“That’s ’cause you nasty too. Now, what’s up with these fishin’ rods?”
“I’m just trying to untangle this one. If you would get me some of that bait over there, I would appreciate it.”
As Roc got the bait, I kept my eyes on Chassidy and Li’l Roc. He threw his ball hard at her face, causing her to fall on the ground. She hit the ground pretty hard, and that’s what made her cry. I dropped my rod and went to go pick her up. Roc had seen what had happened as well, and he tore into Li’l Roc.
