"And why was there a mouse in the bottom corner one?"

"That's a long story," I answered. And one that was private, even if it was only a silly joke. "But I have my patient instructor to thank for all this honor," I added, looking at Pippa.

"Go on now," she blushed. "All I did was show you a bit of fancy stitchwork. Nothing to it, really."

"When you're finished here, Juli, you should come spend the evening with us," said Gemma. "After we help Lady Amanda tidy up a bit at the manor, we're all going to have fish and chips and a proper girls' night. We deserve a bit of reward for all our hard work, don't we?"

"Lady Amanda's bought two cartons of chocolate gelato," said Pippa. "And I've brought both DVDs of Agent Carter."

"Matthew won't mind, I'm sure," coaxed Gemma. "Do say yes."

I glanced at Matt, who merely smiled in surrender. I shook my head. "Sorry, girls, but I promised I'd help him babysit tonight — he's looking after the remaining hybrid roses from the exhibition that haven't been carried home yet."

"You're passing up chocolate gelato and a brilliant show to move some plants into a hothouse?" said Pippa, incredulously.

"Yup," I answered. "I think it has all the makings of a very long night’s work. Don't you?" I lifted my gaze to Matt's as I squeezed his fingers for emphasis. A suggestive gleam appeared in his dark eyes, although he managed to resist the smile his lips tried to form.

"I couldn't agree more," he replied.
