“Oh, he chipped in,” he heard Taylor say from the table where the food was being set up. “You can say it’s from us both. He wouldn’t know what to bring.”

Conner smiled, knowing she was trying to cover for him. He was not used to someone being kind to him without requesting something in return, and he was eager to find out what it was that she wanted.

  “Hey?”

Conner looked up and saw Charles, Paige’s husband, walking over to him.

Charles was one of the men in the community he got along with. It wasn’t that he didn’t get along with the other husbands, but they didn’t have much in common and many of them he hadn’t taken the time to meet or get to know him.

  “Hey,” he replied.

“You here with the new girl, huh?” Charles asked.

“Nah, we just walked here together,” he replied, not wanting to make this into something they could gossip about later.

“She’s a catch though, isn’t she?” Charles replied. “The most beautiful girl here and so successful at such a young age.”

Conner shrugged. It was impressive and she was the most beautiful girl here, but he was trying his very best to not think of her in that way.

“She’s beautiful,” he replied, “but she’s hardly my type.”

“She’s anyone’s type,” Charles continued, “anyone who’s man enough to take advantage of the opportunity.”

“I think you people are trying to convert me,” he said, remembering the conversation he had recently had with his coach and Stanley.

Since the talk, he had been a lot less social. He didn’t know exactly how to do it and he was still trying to negotiate how he could keep his life and live up to their lofty standards. It was proving difficult to live up to those standards and he didn’t want to spend his life living for others.

“I think you’re a twenty-eight-year-old man-child who needs to settle down,” Charles replied, “not based on my conservative views, but based on the fact that you’re not happy and it doesn’t take anyone too long to realise that’s the reason you spend so much time running around with all these women.”

“Pretty heavy talk for a simple potluck,” he joked. “How about we tone it down?”

“I don’t know what to say, man. She doesn’t hate you. That’s all you need to make your first move.” Charles said. “How many women do you know who have heard what she’s heard and still don’t keep you at arm’s length?”

“She doesn’t hate me!” he replied sarcastically.

“And imagine, after all, my wife told her about you.”

The smug smile instantly vanished from his lips. He knew they would talk about him, but the thought of Taylor thinking poorly of him because of their gossip left a bad taste in his mouth.

“Your wife sure knows how to turn a person’s mind,” he said defensively.

“Hey, she speaks the truth at least,” Charles replied, “plus, the girl seems strong enough to form her own opinions. She arrived here with you, so that should be enough to tell you she may be interested.”

He looked over to where Taylor stood sipping a glass of wine and smiling down at a little girl who was showing her bruises. Taylor was listening intently and offering suggestions to solve the problems.

“Hey, I may be wrong,” Charles said patting him on the shoulder, “but in any event, she’s a nice girl. She won’t want for men falling over her.”

Charles didn’t stick around to hear his response. He walked away to find his wife. Connor decided to retreat to the side of the only person present who wasn’t actively judging him.

“Hey,” he said, “what’s going on here?”

“I was telling Dr.Taylor about my bruise,” the little girl chimed in.

“Yes, very well done,” Taylor replied. “If you come to my offices, I think I can get you a few extra stickers for your band-aid.”

With that, the little girl ran off in the direction of her mother to tell her of her impending plans to visit Taylor.

“You’re a natural charmer,” he said.

“Thanks, coming from the best most charming person here,” she said dramatically. “High prices, sir.”

“I was about to ask why you didn’t take any of your victims here today, but now I see your sarcasm must have driven them away.”

Instead of being insulted, she simply laughed. He wondered if she was generally good-natured or if she was a bit tipsy on the wine she was drinking.

“I don’t attract the type of men I like,” She replied.

“What type is that?” he asked.

In the back of his mind, he was hoping it was a man like him, but he pushed the thought as far away as he could.

“I have no idea” she replied. “I’ve never really dated, never been in love. Never had a type.”

He let out a shocked breath. Either she was joking or she was the most clueless woman he had ever met. Either way, he would have to maintain his distance. There was something about her that made him feel as if he wasn’t good enough for her. It was a bad thought but there was nothing he could do to stop it from lingering in his mind. While she didn’t seem like the type to be mean, he knew his reputation preceded him.

  Chapter 7

Taylor stumbled once again as she walked up the steps to her house. She had lost track of her wine and being tipsy was the price she had to pay. Conner had stayed by her side all night and she was slowly becoming more attracted to him as time passed. It was so strange how different they appeared on the outside but how similar they were.

“Are you sure you can make it to bed?” he asked.

“No” she replied, “I’ll probably just start crawling the moment I get inside.”

She found it easy to be herself around him, which was something she hadn’t felt in her last date.

“I should walk you in,” he said while flashing her a concerning expression.

“Are you going to take advantage of me?” she heard herself ask.

Somehow, it felt as if another person was controlling her.

“I would never,” he said with too much conviction.

“Why not?” she asked. “Why am I not desirable to anyone?”

They were inside her house now and he held her upright, so she didn’t stagger to the ground. This close, she could see the whiskers of hair coming out on his chin and smell the light cologne he used.

“Is that what you think?” he asked, pinning her with a concerning look. “Besides the fact that you threatened me the first time I came into this house, you’re the most desirable woman I’ve ever met.”

“Then how come you haven’t kissed me,” she asked.

She wanted to stop the words, but they tumbled out of her mouth uncontrollably. She made a mental note not to drink so much ever again.

“I didn’t know you wanted me to kiss you,” he said, brushing her hair from her face.

“I have no idea,” she replied, “I just know I haven’t been able to find anyone and no-one seems to be interested in women like me anymore.”

“You’re crazy if you think anyone can resist those beautiful eyes and that smile of yours,” he said.

He lowered his head and kissed her. Having only ever been kissed by one man, she had no idea that kisses could be this explosive. The moment his lips touched hers, she felt butterflies in her stomach and she had to hold onto him for support. He wrapped one hand around her waist and pulled her to him.

“Are you sure this is what you want?” he asked, raising his head to look at her

She wondered his question for a moment and she knew it was a mistake but it felt so good already. She didn’t want him to stop kissing her.

“We should worry about tonight’s mistakes tomorrow,” she said.

He didn’t hesitate as he lowered his head once again and began kissing her. He was a large man and she pressed her palms into his rock-hard abs and felt the heat of his body radiating beneath her hands.

  “Let’s go upstairs,” she said.

She led him through the house and to her room on the second floor. Minutes before, she had been hazy but now with the prospect of this man in her bed, she was fully engaged and eager to make love to him.

As she opened the door to her bedroom and stepped inside, she began to feel more nervous than she had before. She turned to face him, and he must have noticed the change and so he stepped back.

“We don’t have to do this,” he said. “I can go, maybe come back in the morning.”

She chuckled and slowly reached up to pull her hair up. She turned to the motion for him to undo the zipper of her dress.

“Can you help me?” she asked innocently.

She waited and soon felt the warmth of his hands on her shoulders and then he was undoing her zipper. She allowed her hair to fall and pulled the dress off her shoulders. It fell to the ground in a pool and she kicked it across the room before turning to face him. She gave herself a pat on the back for choosing to wear her pink lingeries today instead of the mismatched red and purple underwear she had chosen earlier.

“Wow,” he said, “you seem oddly prepared for this. Was it your plan to trick me into your bed?”

Once again, she couldn’t help laughing. How was he managing to be so calm when her nerves were on edge and she was horny, anxious, and scared all at once?

“Would you believe me if I told you it was my plan all along?” she said walking seductively towards him, as seductively as she could.

“I knew it” he replied. “That first night, I could see it in your eyes.”

By now she was standing inches from him and the look in his eyes told her that he wanted her and from the way her body reacted, she wanted him too.

He pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it aside before pulling her towards him. As he held her, she felt his hands artfully undoing her bra and her breasts sprang free. His hand replaced her bra and the sudden rush of adrenaline that coursed through her as his hands brushed against her tender skin sent chills through her body.

In one swoop, he picked her up and walked over to the bed and lowered her. Before joining her, he kicked off his shorts.

“You don’t look too bad,” she said as he settled himself above her.

“You should see me in the daylight,” he bragged.

She was about to say something but then the air left her lungs when he lowered his lips to her neck.

  “Oh my,” she whispered.

It was then that it occurred to her that she should tell him that she was still a virgin. There was a part of her that wanted to but then there was also a part of her that wondered if he would think she was a bit abnormal since she was a grown woman who had never had sex before.

  “Taylor,” she heard him whisper.

She looked down and saw him looking up at her.

  “Is everything alright?” he asked.

  “Umm,” she said.

  “Second thoughts?” he asked.

“No,” she replied, “I have to tell you something.”

“You’re really a guy?” he asked, “because I already knew. I always knew.”

“Be serious,” she chided, “I’m a virgin.”

The way he looked at her told her that he was shocked.

“You are?” he asked, “or is that the joke.”

“I am” she replied. “I never really got around to losing it. It wasn’t a big deal. It still isn’t”

“I see,” he replied with a smile.

“Does that make me weird?” she asked

“No,” he replied. “I don’t think it’s weird at all.”

She let out a sigh of relief and he reached up to kiss her again.

“I will have to be careful,” he said. “We can start slowly.”

She was about to ask how he planned to do that when she felt his hand tugging at her underwear. He sat up and pulled it off before settling himself between her legs. She thought he was going to start but then she felt his hand between her legs and soon he slipped his finger inside her. She was shocked at the way her body reacted so wantonly to his touch. Her hips arched upwards and her breasts tingled as he played with her.

“Feels good?” he asked, kissing her tummy.

  “Mmhm,” she managed to mumble.

The force inside her began to build until she felt as if she was about to explode. It was in that moment that she felt his lips against her inner thigh. She arched her body off the bed and he placed his head in between her legs. Her orgasm came instantly and as she convulsed on the bed, she felt him kissing her cheeks gently.

He waited until her breathing settled before he settled himself between her legs. She felt the hilt of his penis pressing against her and she held her breath preparing for him to enter her.

“It may hurt at first,” he whispered.

  She smiled and nodded.

“I know how this works.” She replied

All her sassiness went out the window as he entered her. It felt strange having him inside her, almost as if he didn’t fit. She rocked her hips trying to become comfortable when she felt a sharp pain.

“Ouch,” she said looking up into his eyes. He didn’t look away. Instead, he lowered his head and kissed her gently.

He moved slowly at first and she began to adjust to the feeling of him inside her and soon, she began to enjoy it. With each thrust, she felt herself moving closer to her orgasm.

“I think I’m going to burst,” she said, unable to control the feeling that she was going to explode

A moment later she was gasping for air as she came violently. Conner was right behind her in a few thrusts and he slumped over her as his breathing settled.

“You’ve blown my mind,” he said, rolling over and pulling her with him so that she was cradled in his arms.

“I should say that,” she replied, “if I had known it was that good, I would have done it long ago.”

“It’s not always this good,” he said, looking down at her with a strange guarded expression.

“Well, then I’m glad I had you to show me just how good it could be,” she replied.

“Hey, I knew you’d bang me the very first time I saw you.”

Taylor laughed. She was struck by how natural it felt to be held by him. He smiled down at her but she was too tired to stay up. She fell asleep in his arms.

  Chapter 8

The next day, Conner awoke early and made his way to Taylor’s kitchen to make breakfast. He checked the time and made note of his training schedule so that he wouldn’t be late. The night before was by far the best sex of his life. He had never experienced anything like it and he was unsure what to make of it. Taylor had confessed that she was a virgin, which came as a surprise. The fact that she allowed him to be the first man to make love to her was a different feeling. She was an amazing woman in every way and he was beginning to feel things he never had before.

As he tried to find something to cook, he heard her coming into the room.

“Hi,” she said, wrapped in a plush pink robe. She was smiling up at him and the light in her eyes told him that she was satisfied. He was suddenly aroused at the thought, but he knew now was not the time for that.

“Hi,” he said. “I thought I’d make you some eggs before leaving.”

“That’s so cute,” she said. “I love eggs.”

He laughed as she made her way across the room and opened the fridge. She pulled out some orange juice and began to drink.

“So, how are you feeling this morning?” he asked

“A bit sore,” she replied, “but I know what to do.”

“Great” he replied. “I have training in an hour so I’m gonna take off soon.”

  “That’s fine,” she said.

She walked over to him and reached up to kiss him.

“Thank you for last night,” she whispered.

He wanted to pull her towards him and take her right there in the kitchen but he had to leave and he didn’t need the coach benching him for arriving late.

p; “You should come to one of my games,” he said. “I think you would love it.”

  Taylor looked at him thoughtfully.

“I think I will come to one of your games,” she said. “I could be another superfan.”

“Oh dear,” he replied. “Just don’t try to kill me when you realize I’m not the man you thought I was.”

“Oh, you know I can’t make that promise,” she joked.

He laughed and watched her walk away. He finished making breakfast and took a portion for himself. He went to her room and collected his clothes, which he hastily dragged on before going outside. The last thing he needed was for a neighbor to see him leaving her house at this time of the morning. When he got home, he ate in a rush and then went to his training center.

“Where have you been?” Stanley asked when he arrived.

“What do you mean?” Conner replied with a question.

“I tried to call you all night,” Stanley replied. “I wanted to introduce you to a friend of mine.”

“Oh, I went to the community potluck last night,” he said. “It was good.”

“Wait, you?” Stanley was surprised. “What’s gotten into you?”

“I met a girl,” he replied. “She’s actually my neighbor.”

“Oh, my,” Stanley responded. “What’s so special about her?”

“She’s pretty awesome,” he replied. “She’s a neurosurgeon.”

“Dude, what’s going on?” Stanley asked. “The last time I checked, you were out here horning around.”

“I don’t know what it is. We haven’t really talked about it, you know,” he answered.

The only thing he knew was that they had spent an amazing night together. She had chosen him to be her first and he thought that must mean something. It wasn’t something he could just ignore and although he wasn’t interested in anything long-term, he wanted to see what could happen between Taylor and him.
