“Sounds like a sweet gig but no thanks.”

  “Please? Come on.”

“Nope, count me out.” I declined.

“If you agree to come, not only will I find a way to fix this thing with Jack so you won’t feel awkward anymore but I’ll start to include you on specific assignments. I know you think I don’t realize it but I know you’re getting antsy because of all the textbook stuff we’ve been going over since you’ve been here.”

“Wow, you’re that desperate for a date?” I asked.

“Yes I am. So will you come with me?”

“Can we stop by and visit Blake and Jade in the hospital before we go?” I asked.

“Of course, I’m sure they’re wondering where you are. I’ll even ask Jack if he can find a way to have them stay somewhere safe so they don’t have to go back to the apartment until we’ve figured out who was behind the break in.”

“Alright, you’ve got yourself a deal.” I agreed.

“Hey can we talk about something before we go to Sibley Memorial?” he looked serious.

  “Yeah sure. What’s up?”

“I want to talk about last night and what happened.”

“Yeah, let’s talk about that. What in the hell was all that about?” I asked.

“Look, I know you being vulnerable and us drinking contributed to it but I should have known better to let it go as far as it did. I’m technically your supervisor. Sleeping together was a mistake and I don’t think it’s wise for it to go any further. I’m sorry I allowed it to get as far as it did.”

“Wait what? Slept together? We did not sleep together. What makes you think we slept together?” I laughed. O-M-G this conversation was both the most uncomfortable one I’ve ever had but the highlight of my life.

“We did sleep together, I remember it distinctly. I remember we took our clothes off and…”

“No, no one took their clothes off because a) we’re still wearing most of them and b) You were obviously too drunk to remember what actually happened.” I laughed again.

“Wait. Now I’m confused. What do you think happened?”

“No it’s not about what I think happened, it’s what I know happened. We were watching this graphic movie after the comedy movie and it had a lot of sex scenes in it. That’s probably what your remembering but you were soooo wasted by the time we got to the middle of the movie and you were the one taking your clothes off. I spent an hour trying to get you to put then back on.”

“Then explain your bra on the floor.”

“It was late but I was still hot. I must have stayed up late and eventually became so sleepy I passed out but I did not sleep with you. I would know if we did.” I said adamantly.

“Are you sure, because I remember detailed situations and things being said.” Greyson argued.

“I don’t know what you’re remembering but it must have been a dream. I’m flattered but what you assumed happened, more than likely didn’t but it’s nice to know that you’re hot for my body.” I teased.

The one thing I loved about Greyson besides him being easy on the eyes is that he was so easy to fluster. He seemed like a good guy, a little too serious about the job, but he was a chill guy to hang out with and had the potential to be funny when he wasn’t trying so hard. As amazing as he seemed to be so far, there was no way I would ever be interested in taking anything further. None whatsoever. Zip. Zilch.

  Chapter Seven

  Greyson

After visiting Jennifer’s friends in the hospital, we found out from the doctor who had been tending to them that they were well enough to go home in a couple of days. While Jennifer was deep in conversation with them, I managed to slip out and contact Jack to see if there was anything he could do about where they were going to go after they were released from the hospital. It was apparent that they were still affected by what happened to them and having to describe what took place over and over probably only kept the memories at the forefront of their minds.

Fortunately, Jack was able to pull some strings and was able to have WITSEC temporarily place them somewhere safe but still were able to keep in contact with their families. According to their testimony, everything happened so fast so they couldn’t remember much details except for one thing: their accent. Jennifer’s friend Jade figured it was European but couldn’t quite place it while Blake was sure it was Russian which made it highly suspect.

If Blake was correct, Jack was suspicious of the incident and was convinced that it wasn’t an isolated incident and it was somehow connected to him. He was convinced that the incident had Natasha written all over it. He probably was right. It wasn’t above Natasha to be so hateful toward Jack that she would go after his child and make him suffer. If I hadn’t asked Jennifer to go to McMullan’s that night, she would have been home at the time her apartment was broken into. We would be telling a different story then.

While Jennifer and I made the short trip to New York for my brother’s wedding, Jack was going to continue taking point and look further into Baladin’s whereabouts since it was obvious they were still in the area somewhere. I hated being gone when updates happened like this but it was only going to be a couple of days.

“I’m glad they’re going to be okay.” Jennifer said to me as we boarded the plane for our 90 minute flight to JFK airport.

“I’m glad too. They seem to be in good spirits. Jack’s idea of them being in temporary WITSEC hold was a great idea. It would give him enough time to track down who was responsible for the break in. He thinks it has something to do with Mel’s mother. She has some vendetta against Jack.”

“Why does she not like Jack? What did he do to her? Did he abandon her too?” she asked.

“No, not at all. Mel’s Uncle Nicholai was targeted by the agency because of his affiliation and ended up getting killed in the process by one of our agents. Baladin and Mel’s folks have been on a revenge streak ever since but that’s not why they are on our wanted list. They have a whole history of committing crimes over the past twenty years or so.”

“Wow. I need to get on that.”

“No, not yet. It’s too dangerous.”

“You promised me you’d get me on something interesting.”

“I am, but you have to give me time. I don’t want to get you involved in something that has a propensity for a lot of violence. Don’t worry, I’ll including you in something. Let me think about it. In the meantime, just enjoy the flight and get ready for my crazy family…”
