  Ramed

  The Eenza chief delegate to the Zondarian pilgrimage, which was sent to welcome Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and escort the U.S.S. Excalibur to Zondar. He shared this responsibility with Killick. After the reception on Zondar, he abducted Calhoun and attempted to kill him. He was stopped by Burgoyne 172.

  Red Gods, The

  Reverential term used by the technologically unsophisticated Rolisans to refer to the Thallonians, who were further described as “they who come from the sky and return to the sky at will.”

  Red Man, The

  Riella/Kalinda’s nickname for Zoran, whom she occasionally saw visiting her imposter mother, Malia, on Montos.

  Redeemers, The

  Fanatical worshipers of the deity Xant. Their religion is based in the Medita region of Tulaan IV. They proselytize alien species aggressively by sending missionary High Priests of Xant to convert entire worlds to Xantism. Members belong to a rigid structure known as the Hierarchy, at the top of which are the religion’s leaders, known as Prime One and The Overlord. Their skin is obsidian black, and their eyes are a deep glowing red.

  The Redeemers were forced to seek the help of the U.S.S. Excalibur and its crew when their homeworld was targeted by the Black Mass. Although the rescue mission was ostensibly a success, Xyon of Calhoun released two small Black Mass creatures on the surface of Tulaan IV, undetected. It is possible the two creatures might eventually grow large enough to destroy the planet.

  Relativity, timeship

  A Federation timeship from the 29th century, commanded by Captain Braxton. Appeared in orbit over the planet Haresh after Captain Calhoun ordered the U.S.S. Excalibur on a course that took it back in time by four days to prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

  Respler 4-A

  A world of the Thallonian Empire on which dissidents who opposed the royal family were executed.

  Rheela

  Female farmer, native to the planet Yakaba. Mother of a young son, Moke. The identity of the boy’s father is ambiguous, and Rheela raised the boy alone.

  Although Rheela had a reputation among her neighbors for being a rainmaker, a precious thing in a desert region, some of the people of Narrin, such as Maestress Cawfiel, tried to paint her as “evil” or as a “weather witch” because they disapproved of the fact that her son was born out of wedlock, and she either could not or would not name the father.

  She was murdered by Temo, a Yakaban criminal.

  Riella

  Name given to the kidnapped and brainwashed Thallonian princess Kalinda after her abduction to the planet Montos by Zoran. Despite attempts to cosmetically alter her appearance, her complexion remained too dusky for her to fit in with the pale-skinned Montosians, so she was placed in the custody of Malia, whom Riella was led to believe was her mother. Malia kept Riella under virtual house arrest as much as possible.

  Rier

  Leader of the Dogs of War. The group’s best fighter and tracker. Led the Dogs to Barspens in search of the rogue Thallonian warrior Sumavar.

  Rikolet, The

  “The City of the Dead” located within the capital city on Romulus. Its stone and masonry work is even more magnificent than that of the capital itself. Its innumerable crypts spread out from the gated entrance, across the landscape as far as the eye can see. Interment in the Rikolet is reserved for the rich and powerful, nobility, senators and praetors. The House of Melkor’s tomb is located down and to the left of the entrance.

  Rizpak, Minister

  Leader of Haresh.

  Rojam

  A henchman of Zoran.

  Rolisa

  In the future of a parallel quantum reality in which the Black Mass does not exist, this is the “greatest world in all the known galaxy.” Though neither strategically located nor possessing valuable resources, it became a model for civilization, populated by great thinkers, and its guidance ushered in an era of peace, prosperity and evolution beyond the need for physical bodies. In the universe known by Captain Calhoun and the U.S.S. Excalibur, Rolisa was devoured by the Black Mass just less than twenty years prior to the fall of the Thallonian Empire.

  Rolisans

  Inhabitants of Rolisa. In one reality, they became great thinkers and leaders of a new galactic civilization. In this reality, they were a snack for the Black Mass.

  Ronk

  Impatient and perpetually cranky dirt farmer from the southern district of Yakaba. Now resides in Narrin, where he is particularly outspoken during the monthly town meetings.

  Rules of Vulcan Discipline, The

  Starfleet Lieutenant Soleta told her associate, Sharky, that the first three Rules are:

  Know yourself completely.

  Rule One is impossible.

  To know oneself completely is to know that the impossible is illogical.

  Soleta claims there are Vulcan masters who have spent lifetimes studying the ramifications of the first three rules. She also told Sharky the 5th Rule is “Ignore the previous three rules.” The veracity of Soleta’s account of the Rules to Sharky is unknown.

  Ryjaan

  A Danteri representative who opposed direct Federation involvement in Sector 221-G following the collapse of the Thallonian Empire. His father, Falkar of the House of Edins, was a Danteri military commander who was killed while attempting to hunt down M’k’n’zy of Calhoun.

  Sanf

  Thallonian communications officer aboard the imperial flagship, under the command of Sedi Cwan.

  Saulcram

  Young male resident of Alpha Carinae. During the rebellion against Redeemer control, he struck the killing blow against the High Priest of Alpha Carinae, releasing the pathogen that annihilated all life-forms on the planet.

  Scannell

  Male security guard aboard the U.S.S. Excalibur. His mind was destroyed by hostile forces in the line of duty. He was the second Excalibur officer killed in the line of duty under the command of Captain Calhoun.

  Search For Allways, The

  A coming-of-age ritual for adolescent Xenexians that entails traveling into the dangerous region of Xenex known as The Pit, and wandering its wastes until one experiences visions of one’s future and discerns one’s true purpose in life. The ritual of The Search vanished from modern Xenexian traditions as its death toll mounted, but it continues as an underground challenge or dare, a test of bravery and ego.

  Seclor, Doctor

  Vulcan physician whose duties Selar assumed while Seclor recovered from a bout of xenopolycythemia. Selar was on Vulcan at the time, while caring for her newborn child, Xyon.

  Second Coming of Xant, The

  An event foretold in Xantism, the religion of the Redeemers. The dogma of Xantism declares that Xant journeyed into another plane of existence by entering the Beyond Gate, and that in the future he will return through the Beyond Gate.

  Section AZ83 (read “Alpha Zed 83”)

  Sector of Thallonian space in which the Hunger Zone lies. All efforts to explore there have been unsuccessful. Probes launched into the Hunger Zone have been eaten.

  Sector 18M

  Location of The Quiet Place, at Marks 113-114, in orbit of Star 7734.

  Sector 221-G

  Location of the now-collapsed Thallonian Empire.

  Sector 47-B

  Region of the Alpha Quadrant to which the U.S.S. Exeter was assigned after the installment of Captain Elizabeth Shelby as its commanding officer.

  Seidman, U.S.S.

  Starfleet transport vessel, sent to pick up security officers Hecht and Scannell, the first two Excalibur crewmen killed under the command of Mackenzie Calhoun.

  Seklar

  Vulcan male patient of Doctor Seclor. Seklar had been having aches in his joints for close to a year before seeking treatment. He was attended to by Dr. Selar.

  Selar, Dr.

  Chief medical officer of the Starship Excalibur, under the command of Captain Calhoun. An accomplished physician who trained under Dr. Beverly Crusher of the Starship Enterprise,Selar has been a
ccused of lacking bedside manner.

  One of the most important moments in Selar’s life was the death of her mate, Voltak, during the early moments of their Pon Farr joining. This premature disruption of the Vulcan mating ritual resulted in a delayed-reaction mating urge, which forced Selar to resume Pon Farr less than three years after the death of Voltak.

  Although Selar initially selected Captain Calhoun to act as her mate during her unexpected Pon Farr, she ultimately mated with Burgoyne 172. She subsequently became pregnant, and named the child Xyon, in honor of Xyon of Calhoun, the ostensibly late son of Captain Mackenzie Calhoun.

  Selective Branching, Theory of

  Enevian precept of advanced temporal mechanics, developed in full by the 39th century, that is based on the highly fluid nature of time. The theory resolves many of the paradoxes that plagued early temporal theories.

  Selinium

  Capital city of the planet Nelkar.

  Sentries, The

  Law-enforcement officers on Liten.

  Shadrak

  Yakaban man. Brother to Temo, Qinos, and Kusack. Helped Temo attempt to rescue Kusack from jail in the city of Narrin.

  Shakespeare’s Tavern

  Elizabethan-style tavern restaurant on Risa. Waitstaff wear period costumes, and the decor includes such touches as manuscripts of Shakespearean plays in both English and the “original Klingon.”

  Sharky

  A heavyset, dyspeptic human with hair whose thinness is matched only by his temper. Has a paranoid, obsessive attachment to his freighter, and won’t leave it except under the most dire of circumstances.

  A fairly experienced smuggler, his life was saved by Soleta during her wandering years. He repaid his life-debt to her by helping her sneak onto the surface of Romulus and subsequently escape back to Federation space.

  Shelby, Captain

  Commanding officer of Starfleet vessel U.S.S. Sutherland. No relation to Starfleet officer Elizabeth Paula Shelby.

  Shelby, Elizabeth Paula

  Shelby was part of an elite unit assigned to assess weaknesses in the Borg during the Federation’s early confrontations with that species. She served briefly as first officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise, under the command of Commander William Riker, following the abduction of Captain Jean-Luc Picard by the Borg. After helping rescue Picard, Shelby graciously relinquished her post as Enterprise first officer to Riker, who, though he often found Shelby to be frustrating, commended her as a highly skilled officer.

  Shelby is a tough-as-nails officer who makes no secret of her ambitions. She was a top candidate for the captain’s chair aboard the Excalibur, until the post was given to her ex-fiancé, Captain Mackenzie Calhoun. Shelby was assigned as Calhoun’s first officer in hopes that she could keep him in line, but she soon established a modus vivendi with Calhoun, and served as his first officer with great distinction.

  After the destruction of the Ambassador-class U.S.S. Excalibur, Shelby was promoted to captain of the U.S.S. Exeter. She later transferred off the Exeter, citing personality differences with her senior staff. She was offered, and accepted, command of the new, Galaxy-class Excalibur, and reassembled the crew from the prior Excalibur.

  At the christening and launch ceremony for the new starship, Mackenzie Calhoun dramatically interrupted the proceedings to let it be known that reports of his demise were greatly exaggerated, and to propose marriage to Shelby. She accepted, and was married to Captain Mackenzie Calhoun on the bridge of the newly christened Starship Excalibur. Captain Jean-Luc Picard performed the ceremony.

  Sh’nab

  A tribal elder of Calhoun during the early days of M’k’n’zy’s tenure as warlord in the Xenexian uprising against the Danteri.

  Shuffer

  Head of the Corinder Science Council. Bears a slight resemblance to his brother, the Corinderian Ferghut, who implicated him and four other senior members of the Science Council for hatching a conspiracy to commit genocide against the Makkusian race.

  Shukko

  A Dog of War slain by Xyon of Calhoun for his skin, which was used as a disguise to fool Vacu.

  Sigma Tau Ceti

  Intended destination of the freighter Cambon before it was disabled by a crossfire in a region of the Lemax system known as The Gauntlet.

  Six-Card Warhoon

  A card game, similar to poker, and very popular on Mojov Station.

  Skarm

  A henchman of Zoran.

  Slon

  Younger brother of Dr. Selar, and a high-ranking member of the Vulcan Diplomatic Corps. Stands a head taller than Selar, and has a very triangular face and exceedingly curved eyebrows that give his face a look of perpetual disdain.

  Slon posesses a far more wry outlook on life than do most Vulcans. He has no children, has never experienced Pon farr, and, according to Selar, never will, because of his “special friendship” with a Vulcan male named Sotok.

  Acted as a liaison with the Hermat Directorate during Burgoyne’s petition for parental rights regarding Xyon, Burgoyne and Selar’s half-breed offspring.

  Soleta

  Science officer aboard the U.S.S. Excalibur. Her previous experience in Thallonian space made her uniquely qualified for service on the Excalibur, which was assigned to Thallonian space.

  Early in her Starfleet career, during a visit to Plexus IV, she was detained for roughly 94 hours for failing, upon her arrival, to stand and listen to the local clergy extol the virtues of the Plexian deities.

  During her first mission in Thallonian space, she was captured on the planet Thallon while conducting geological research. She was rescued from a Thallonian prison by Spock, who was disguised as a Thallonian. On their way to safety they were intercepted by Thallonian prince Si Cwan—later known as Federation ambassador Si Cwan—who chose to facilitate their escape rather than sound the alarm. Si Cwan later asked Soleta to repay this favor by smuggling him aboard the Excalibur.

  Because her natural father was a Romulan, Soleta has occasional difficulty controlling her emotions. Soleta was raised by her mother, T’Pas, and adoptive father, Volak.

  Soleta first confronted Rajari, the Romulan criminal who raped her mother, while she was serving aboard the starship Aldrin. Years later, she tracked the terminally ill Rajari to the Titan Colony, following his release from a Federation prison. He duped her into traveling to Romulus on his behalf and triggering an explosion that killed several Romulan leaders and leveled a prominent landmark in the capital city.

  Solly

  A wandering Yakaban gunman who was a player in the card game that ended with Kusack’s murder of Turkin.

  Sotok

  Vulcan male who is the “special friend” of Selar’s brother, Slon.

  Space Station K-19

  Starport where Ensign Ronni Beth purchased a ring that she gave to Ensign Christiano as a gift.

  Spangler

  Yakaban man. Runs the local newspaper in Narrin. Can be annoyingly earnest.

  Sparky

  Nickname given by Burgoyne 172 to the Tentacle, a creature of energy plasma that attempted to hatch from the U.S.S. Excalibur’s warp core. Later protected the ship from being destroyed by the energy field of a Promethean vessel.

  SPIT

  An acronym for a Short-range Portable Individual Transport device. Designed purely to allow the more affluent members of a society to travel privately, rather than by using a transport center as the “lower classes” are obliged to do.

  Staiteium

  A really dense, tough metal.

  Location of The Quiet Place, in Sector 18M, Marks 113-114.

  Strange New Worlds

  Popular officers’ club and bar in San Francisco, puckishly named for the Starfleet motto. The bar’s motto is, “Explore Us!” Less exclusive than the popular, ship-captains-only San Francisco bar known as The Captain’s Table.

  Sulimin the Planner

  Leader of an Unglza clan from the eastern territories of Zondar.

  Once one of the premier warriors of the Thallonian Empire, he was well past his prime when he was hunted down on the planet Barspens by the Dogs of War, who sought from him the location of The Quiet Place. He died without giving it to them.

  Summons, The

  In every third or fourth generation of the Thallonian imperial family, a princess of the line, upon reaching a certain age, receives the Summons. There is never advance warning, the princess simply disappears one night, sometimes to return, sometimes never to be seen again. If the princess returns, she never speaks of what she witnessed, except in the vaguest of terms. Kalinda was the last Thallonian princess to receive the Summons.

  Suti

  A friendly nickname for Suti-Lon-sondon, used only by the Zondarian prophet Ontear.

  Suti-Lon-sondon

  One of the oldest acolytes of Zondarian seer Ontear. Sometimes referred to by Ontear simply as Suti.

  Takahashi, Lieutenant

  Night watch ops officer aboard the Excalibur. Also known as “Hash.” An Asian man of youthful mien, with ostensibly naturally blond hair.

  Talila

  A Zondarian woman, of the Eenza ethnic group; wife of Ramed; mother of Rab.

  Tanzi 419

  Hermat ambassador to Earth. Long, silver hair. An old friend of Burgoyne 172, Tanzi attempted to intercede on Burgoyne’s behalf with the Hermat Directorate, which refused to entertain Burgoyne’s petition for official Hermat intervention in his custody battle with Selar over their offspring, Xyon.

  Tapinza, Maester

  Male Yakaban, neighbor of Rheela. Was the most successful businessman in Yakaba’s three major provinces, and an expert at piloting landskippers and other forms of desert transportation. Had a fierce scar that ran from the top of his forehead to just under his nose. His brow was a bit sloped, his eyebrows thick and green, and his overall effect was that of a primitive. He was, however, quite astute, and saw in technology a potential that many of his fellow Yakabans do not see. He was killed by Moke, as revenge for his role in the death of Moke’s mother, Rheela.

  Tara

  Rolisan woman. In a parallel reality, a distant ancestor of Faicco the Small, one of the greatest thinkers in the known galaxy. In this reality, she died during childbirth when the Black Mass devoured Rolisa.
