She was sure, however, that Dan had a plan in mind, something that would definitively prove Johnson’s crimes. Her mood uplifted, Adele went for a swim.
*****
Dan did have a plan, he just wasn’t sure if he was ready to act out on it. He walked first down the lane, to the lake, and then back up the lane to the next wide road. He walked past Johnson’s house, but saw no movement there. He could make out through the trees that his SUV was still in front of the garage, which meant he was home, unless he had left using another car. There was always a possibility that he kept a weekend ride – a small roadster, just like Dan had loaned for the case. He was momentarily worried and almost went over to check out the house, but decided against it. If Johnson was at home he would bust Dan easily enough (only a fool would try to sneak up like that in broad day light); and if Johnson had left… well, he would be in the wind by that time, and their assignment would lose all purpose.
So, Dan walked past the lot and down to the road. Several cars passed, and Dan turned right, towards the town. It would be a long walk, but that was fine. He needed time to think and to gather the guts to do what he was set on doing.
He wasn’t going to beat Johnson up, that much had been true, but the idea that he had would be an all-in play. He would be betting all their chips on his own ability to get people to talk, and with Johnson it could be a much harder task. Not only was he a con man with years of experience, he was a legit psychology doctor, and if Dan had learned anything about the man – he was good at reading people.
Not good enough, Dan thought, ‘cause he’s still in.
Yes, Johnson was still game, and with a hundred grand to win. Perhaps, he was coming up with an even more complex “treatment”. If it sounded convincing enough, he could ask for a hundred and fifty, two hundred even. That would be reckless, but Dan knew con men, and most of them were gamblers. For them, there was always one last job, one last con before they retired, and that was always the one that got them busted. That was what Dan counted on, thinking over his plan.
She hadn’t told Adele, because he knew she’d be against it, and for a good reason, but still he was determined to go through with it. After Red’s stalling it became obvious that he was onto them, and waiting until the next session could turn out to be a waste of time. They had to bust him while he was still playing along while there was still hope that he had swallowed their bait.
Dan could see the diner in the distance, so he jogged the rest of the way and got a pot of coffee. Coffee was another thing that helped his brain function properly. He paid and left, walking back towards their neighborhood at a quick pace. He made sure he was sweaty and heavily breathing when he got to Johnson’s front door. He rang the bell several times and waited.
“Daniel?” Red said.
“Hey. Is it a good time?”
“Um… I guess, sure. Please, come in.”
Dan entered the house and crashed on the nearby sofa, struggling to catch his breath.
“Are you okay? Water?” Johnson asked and went to get some.
“Please.” Dan drank a glass of cold water and handed it back empty. “Thanks.”
“So, what happened?” He was suspicious already, squinting, as he looked Dan over.
“I had a bit of a falling out with Adi.” He breathed out heavily.
“Tell me what happened.” He put a hand on his shoulder. “Let’s see what we can do.”
“Can we go somewhere more private?”
“Of course.”
Johnson made some coffee, and together they went upstairs to his office. Dan got comfortable on the couch, and Red sat next to him.
“So. What’s up?” he asked.
“Adi. She’s got cold feet about the whole thing, so we had a little fight. A shouting match, nothing too serious.”
That wasn’t enough to make Red nervous. He sipped coffee casually and said, “And?”
“I don’t know, man. Right now it feels like we’ll have to put it on hold for at least a few days. A few weeks, more likely.”
“I see.”
Dan was starting to sweat – the plan was going down the crapper.
“Listen. Is there anything you can do? I was serious when I said you’re our last hope. Adi is freaking out, and frankly, I just don’t know what to do.” He did his best to sound distressed. “We’ve tried everything, man.”
Johnson handed him his cup and got up. He walked to the desk and sat behind the computer. A few minutes went by in complete silence, as Dan drank the coffee, thinking what to do next.
Johnson scrolled for a while, then said, “I have reviewed your medical history, Daniel.” There you go, Dan thought. “Your case is a complicated one.” Of course it is. “There is a spot for a continuous program, but it has to begin this week.”
Dan said, “Okay.”
Red frowned, staring at the screen intensely. “Here’s the deal. I understand you are doubtful as far as pills concerned, but let me assure you, they are an integral part of the treatment.”
Oh, I don’t doubt that, buddy! Out loud, Dan said, “Naturally. What else is there? We are here for a long haul, assuming I can convince Adi to stay…”
“There’s physical therapy, of course, as well as regular sessions, where we talk things out. Sounds good so far?”
“Yeah.” Dan got up and walked over, meaning to sneak a peek at the computer screen – he was sure there was nothing on the desktop.
Surprisingly, Johnson had a few windows open, including Adi’s medical records and a list of procedures he had just offered him.
“If I may ask, Red. How much?”
“A moment.”
Buzzing and cracking came from the corner of the room, and Dan saw a piece of paper crawl out of the printer machine. Dan walked over and picked it up. Below the long list of treatments there was a total figure of $127000. Bingo. But the paper alone meant nothing.
“Wow,” Dan said under his breath, making sure Red heard it.
“Yeah, well. What can I say? This is the price of the program. You will find that all my patients have agreed to similar terms.”
None of that interested Dan, not now. He walked over and leaned against the desk.
“And for this number we’re guaranteed to have a child?”
Johnson chose words carefully: “Unfortunately, nothing can be guaranteed a hundred per cent, Daniel.”
“But you promised to help us!” he said, purposefully louder, as he hovered over the charlatan.
Johnson sprung to his feet. “Do not use that tone with me, Mr. Krakowski, this is inappropriate.”
“Is it? You gave us hope! And now you’re saying there is no guarantee?”
He advanced towards Johnson, forcing him to step back.
“I don’t like where this conversation is going, Daniel. I think you better leave.”
“Oh, I’ll leave, but not before you promise me that this will help us.”
Dan knew he was a big guy, so he straightened his back and broadened his shoulders, making sure Johnson felt his presence, intimidating and serious.
It worked like a charm.
Once the deed was done, Dan left the house, hopefully for the last time. He patted the Cadillac on his way out, aware that Johnson would soon have to wave it goodbye.
He walked home without a hurry, but excited to bring Adele the good news.
Chapter 9
Dan had been gone for almost to hours, and Adele began to worry. She still held out hope that he had simply gone into town to have a snack at the diner, but her instinct told her that was wishful thinking. She knew he had gone to Johnson.
Dan wouldn’t be so stupid as to threaten him – surely he knew that would be inadmissible in court, and could possibly break the case altogether. Yet, she’d seen him act emotional, and that could’ve triggered something dark.
She was at the window when she saw him.
Dan stepped in through the front door. He had a wide smile on his face.

What have you done?” she asked, terrified.
“Later. But you will want to hear what I’m going to do.”
He walked over to her and put his hands on the small of her back. He whispered into her ear.
“Dan…” she said.
“Sounds good, doesn’t it?”
He swept her off her feet then and carried her up the stairs. She kissed him on the way up, her arms around his neck. He smelled of sweat, but to her the smell was arousing more than anything else.
Dan put her down on the bed and pulled off her shirt – there was nothing underneath. He kissed her chest and her breasts as he got down to his knees. She had nothing but panties on, and he pulled them down, as well. Without much foreplay he got down on her, kissing and licking between her legs. She bit her lip.
She put her hands on his head and pressed it tighter. Dan tongue played around with her clit, and then licked her up and down. She was impossibly wet now. He got to his feet and shook off his pants and boxers. He was hard, and he slipped right into her. She moaned.
He put his hands on her sides and moved fast and hard, his hips slapping on her ass.
“Slow down,” she muttered, but only because she wanted him to last longer.
He kept going with the same tenacity, leaning in to kiss her. She kissed him back and pulled him down on to the bed. He laid down on his back, and Adele sat up.
She stroked his hard cock a few times, and then began to suck on it. Dan grabbed her thigh and pulled her on top of himself, with his cock still in her mouth. She felt his tongue go inside of her, as he rubbed her clit with his thumb. She strained and pressed down with her hips. Involuntarily, she moved back and forth on his face, while stroking his penis with one hand and playing with his balls with the other. He was hard and demanding, and she couldn’t restrain herself any longer.
She moved and sat down on his penis, making sure it went deep. Dan grabbed her hips and shifted her back and forth. He pulled her back then and she was on her back on top of him. He put his hands on her breasts, pinching the nipples, and kissed her neck, as his cock moved in and out, slowly. Adele reached down and played with herself, her fingers lightly touching his shaft. She was about to come.
He rolled her over onto her belly and kept going. She shrieked, coming, her legs shaking. Dan kissed the nape of her neck, one of his fingers sliding through her hair. He pulled it, and she moaned even louder, biting at the blanket. It was clenched in her fists, too, and she wanted him to go deeper still.
She felt him straighten up and put his hands on the small of her back. He slowed down, slipping in and back out. She felt one of his hands move between her buttocks, his thumb entering her ass. She relaxed and tensed at the same time, and that was when he went harder again.
When he slowed down, Adele turned over, bringing one leg over his head. She wanted to look at him when he fucked her. But first, he went down on her again, tickling her clit with the tip of his tongue. Three of his fingers entered her and moved around, hitting the sweet spot. She shivered, and her head fell back on the bed. She almost cried.
Then he was inside her again, with his thumb still on her clit, twisting it around. She held on to his muscular forearms, nails scratching his skin. It was by far the best sex they’d had.
She saw he was getting tired, so they switched, and she was on top once again. She rode him for a good ten minutes, shifting back and forth. He held on to her breast and she sucked on his thumb, biting it, as well. She came once while being on top, and leaned to his ear.
“How do you want it?” she whispered with a smile, knowing he would be too out of it to reply. That was okay – she had her own ideas.
She loved to see him cum, and knew he loved it when she watched him come all over her – all men enjoyed that, and she happened to be a woman who enjoyed it just as much.
After a few more minutes of jumping, Adele laid down next to him, and he climbed on top. He was wet with perspiration, but still relentless and lustful. He made her come again, and this time she felt he was close himself. Before that could happen, she pulled his cock out and began stroking it as he rubbed her clit. A moment later he threw back his head and climaxed, showering her breasts with hot sperm, getting some of it on her chin. Her nipples hardened. She pulled him closed and sucked slowly, while holding on to his ass, lest he wiggled out. When his penis began going soft, she let him lay down.
“I love you,” he whispered.
“I love you too,” she replied.
She thought it was just endorphins speaking, but she also knew better. They did love each other, and that connection was more than just sex (although that contributed greatly, too).
They laid for a few minutes, and then Adele went to shower, and Dan joined her a minute later. They held each other under hot water, not speaking, but touching and caressing each other subtly, which was a language by itself.
They threw on simple clothes and went downstairs, both hungry and thirsty. They drank water first, and then white wine, while in the oven chicken was being prepared. They laid down on the couch with their glasses, listening to the machine buzz, the room slowly filling with the delicious smell of grilled meat.
Adele said, “What were you so happy about earlier?” Although, she thought, there was only one thing that could’ve had that effect.
“It’s a surprise.”
“Tell me we can leave this place, Danny.” She hoped. It was too good of a notion to believe in without proof.
“We can, but I’d rather we stayed until tomorrow. I’m too tired for a four-hour drive.”
She gave him a kiss, unabashedly happy. She couldn’t wait to hear the details, but like Dan was too tired to ask.
“My hero,” was all she whispered.
They drowsed, and woke up from the oven beeping loudly. Dan jumped up and hurried to switch it off. They ate, chasing it down with wine, looking at each other. There was nothing else Adele needed just then. She was free.
Free to leave and free to love. Free to be herself with a man who took care of her, and who she could take care of. They were indeed a good team, like Neil had pointed out.
They spent the rest of the day in bed, talking about everything but the case, getting to know each other, now that there was nothing else occupying their minds.
*****
On Tuesday they packed and left, taking the Mercedes out of Bolton and away from lake George. Dan was out of character – he'd put on jeans and a t-shirt, and he didn’t shave that morning. He drove without a hurry, knowing that their assignment had been a success all across the board.
“I’m gonna miss it, you know,” Dan said. “The lake cottage, the community…”
“Community of complete bores!”
“I’m telling you, those bores are into some kinky shit. Gotta be.”
Adele laughed. It was probable. She knew what Dan meant. She began to miss their rental, as well. It was a frustrating experience, but at the same time a cool adventure.
“And I’m getting used to the car,” he added. “It’s not as dumb, but there’s elegance to it. Do I sound like one of them?”
“Totally! But I like it.”
She took his hand into hers. Adele did like him like this. Dan Krakowski had surprised her on every level, and she wanted to hold on to the feeling. The worst thing she could imagine was Dan going back to being an immature idiot.
“Listen,” she said when they were nearing the city. “Are you sure we have everything we need? Without a doubt?”
She trusted him, but as they got closer to the office, she started getting progressively more nervous.
“Without a doubt,” he replied, and gave her a confident grin. “The son of a bitch is ours. I trust Curry and Radcliffe will be very happy.”
“You know, since I’m second chair on the case, I really should know what’s up.”
“And you will. Relax.”
She did. It was over, and there was nothing to worry about. At least that’s what she kept telling h
erself.
Their first stop was a Mercedes dealership, where Dan returned the car. His blue Camaro had accumulated a thin layer of dust, and Dan cursed when they picked the car up. Still Adele was happy when she saw him reunited with his ride, lingering for a moment before starting the engine.
“That’s more like it,” he muttered.
He drove straight to the office after that, and into the employee parking.
“Are you ready for this?” he asked her.
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
Because of Neil? she wanted to add, but didn’t.
“Never mind. We’ll be hunky-dory. Come on.”
He killed the engine and stepped out. They took the elevator up to the office. It was nine in the evening, and the cubicles stood empty, with only dim lights in the silence. Dan led the way. She wanted to hold his hand, but knew it wouldn’t be appropriate.
“Radcliffe?” Dan asked.
“Yeah.” Since Neil was the lawyer on the case, of course they had to go to him first.
Cameron wasn’t there, so they entered the office freely. Neil wasn’t there, so they sat down at the small conference table and waited. Dan produced his small cell phone and put it on the table. Adele had figured it out already, but, excited, had to ask anyway.
“You’ve recorded him?”
“Yep.”
“How did you..? Doesn’t matter.” She smiled thinly, nervously. She wanted to leave this case behind. They’d gone through a lot to get this recording, and dragging it out any longer was torture.
Adele texted Neil, saying they were waiting for him, and a few minutes later he came over, together with Meg.
Dan and Neil shook hands, and it wasn’t even weird. Both men were doing business, and had left personal life at the door. Adele respected that. Meg gave her a smile of approval and a small nod, as if saying good job. Adele wasn’t sure it had to do with her work on the case though.
Both name partners joined them at the table. Dan put the case folder on the table and moved it to Neil – he had no further use for it.
“So, what have you found out?” Neil asked. He looked tired, but focused, as he always was.
