Sweet Harmony: An Older Man, Younger Woman Romance Page 10

“In this fantasy are you in your underwear?”

He smiled. “Whatever you wish. And don’t forget, I’m dropping the boys off at their mom’s house after the concert, so we will celebrate with a very expensive bottle of champagne.”

“I love how you get when you drink too much champagne,” I said.

“I love when you take advantage of an old drunk man,” he grinned.

I gave him a quick kiss and walked backstage, feeling ready to get back out there.

Everyone in the orchestra had been so incredibly kind to me after my short leave. However, with Jeffrey’s help, my two months leave turned into just one month. I was relieved that I could return to work so quickly. So, between what my parents had left me and what I was making with the orchestra, I was doing well. Plus, I saved a lot of expenses living with Jeffrey. I never imagined moving in with any man so soon, but everything was just right.

As I played, I could see Jeffrey and the boys in the front row. I tried not to look too often, so I could concentrate on my music, but I loved how proud he looked. Music was his entire life, and I was so glad that I could be a part of it.

I didn’t tell Jeffrey, but the conductor asked me a week before the performance if I’d like to play a solo as a way to welcome me back. At first, I turned him down, but after a little persuasion from the other members, I accepted.

When Jeffrey was still in bed in the morning, I dug through his sheet music collection looking for the perfect thing to play. I wanted to dedicate the piece to Jeffrey because I owed my musical career to him, but nothing seemed quite good enough.

That was until I heard the tape he made of our impromptu recording sessions. Suddenly, I knew exactly what I wanted to play.

As I got up from my chair when it was time for my solo, I saw Jeffrey’s eyebrows practically disappear into his hairline, he was so surprised. The conductor announced my name, to which I received generous applause.

When it was silent, I approached the microphone.

“Thank you. While I am dedicating my entire performance tonight to my family, I am dedicating this piece to my mentor, collaborator, and the love of my life. This is an original composition called Sweet Harmony.

I closed my eyes, imagined standing in the living room with Jeffrey lounging in his chair, a broad smile on his face. When I opened my eyes, he was there. And I knew in that moment, that he would always be there.
