Girl Vs (Sinister Skies Book 1)

Lucky didn’t trot over, as he usually did.
“Here, boy,” I called.
He turned his head to me, but remained where he was.
Dejected, I sat down right in the grass and watched him shake a fly from his neck. Allison sat too.
“Do you remember what I asked you before? Back when you were in the hospital?”
I continued to stare forward.
“I asked what you wanted.”
I remembered. The only thing I could think was to fight. But the fire was gone. I could fight and fight, and it wouldn’t matter. People died anyway.
“Have you figured it out?”
I stared until my eyes lost focus and everything became blurry. Tears surfaced and threatened to spill over.
“I want a break,” I said. My voice cracked. “From everything.”
Allison put her arm around my shoulders. Surprising myself, I didn’t pull away.
“Okay,” she said. “It’s okay. You can have a break.”
A dam broke inside me. The tears I’d held at bay for so long came pouring down my face.
I cried. For Ian and Logan and Tristen and John and Meg, I cried. A cry that delved into my soul and pried loose the pain I held so tightly, purging a fragment of anguish with every tear I allowed to fall. I cried even for myself.
When I was done, when every tear had run its path, I sat back and wiped my face. Allison gazed at me with steady eyes. I made the first decision of my break. It was a strange feeling, knowing what I wanted, wanting something other than bloodshed.
“Okay,” I said. “I’m going for a ride.”
Epilogue
“We’ll need her again. You know we will,” Tess said.
“I know,” Allison replied. “But give her as much time as you can. Or she won’t be ready.”
“The global situation—our allies are ready to move. They want the strike force ready for briefing in three weeks.”
“She’s still the best candidate. Just give her a moment to breathe.”
“A moment,” Tess mulled. “A moment may be too long.”
