The Hierophant's Daughter

by M F Sullivan

In retaliation, General Dominia di Mephitoli orchestrates the mass slaughter of encamped humans in an event which will come to be known as “the Black Night”

Soon after, the General enters seclusion in the Canadian Jurisdictions for 20 years; the reasons for this are broadly related to threats on her life following the Black Night, but the real reasons remain a mystery

  CE 3948 / AL 1903

General di Mephitoli is ordered back from her sabbatical to engage in the ongoing South American Conflict, in hopes that her presence will end the thirty-year struggle

  CE 3951 / AL 1906

The Battle for the Reclamation of Mexico, the final battle of the South American Conflict, begins as the bloodiest loss of the General’s career; she is captured and spends six nights as a POW before making good her escape in what becomes known as “the Nogales Rampage”

The bloody path Cicero and his company carve to rendezvous with her in Tucson puts a brutal end one of the most horrific wars the planet has yet seen

On a Pacific Northwest beach following the war, the General meets her future wife, Cassandra

Six months later, General di Mephitoli is promoted to governess of the United Front

  CE 3952 / AL 1907

A strange announcement is made: thanks to a tip from the Lamb, the Hierophant discovers an abandoned baby girl, which he claims to have been infected by tainted breast milk; however, the through the mercy of God, the baby will rise again despite the fact that introduction of the protein into an infant body tends to kill the child permanently, rather than transmute it into a martyr

Therefore, although the baby dies soon after the Hierophant’s discovery, he places the dead body under the care of a team of doctors

Incredibly, the abandoned child grows during death, and over the next twenty years, will develop into a physically normal adult; the reasons are unknown, and efforts to replicate the effect can lead only to permanent infant mortality

  CE 3975 / AL 1930

Santa Lavinia di Firenze, Sacred Princess of Europa, Merciful Miracle of the Holy Father, and Blessed Virgin of the Holy Family, awakens after a twenty-four-year-long period of clinical death; a heartbeat begins in February and brain activity starts in March, leaving the girl in a comatose state until the year’s end

She awakens for the first time in her life that December

For his efforts in maintaining watch for signs of vitals over the past decade, her doctor, Theodore, is martyred by the Hierophant, and awarded the title, “del Medico,” as well as a large sum of land he tends to spurn in favor of following Lavinia’s transportation between the Holy Father’s many castles

  CE 4036 / AL 1991

In an effort to increase the martyr population, which is still struggling to renew itself after the war, the Hierophant issues a blanket writ of permission: for the next twenty years, all martyrs looking to become parents may martyr any child under the age of 10 without an interview by a Holy Family member

Particularly in the Front cities of San Valentino and New Elsinore, martyring rates skyrocket

On a farm in the Jurisdiction of California, a border collie gives birth to a litter of puppies; one finds its way into a neighboring farmhouse, belonging to the McLintock family

  CE 4041 / AL 1996

Santa Lavinia di Firenze celebrates her 66th Feast Day

  CE 4042 / AL 1997

Cassandra di Mephitoli dies on the First of May, aged 113

The Governess of the United Front attempts to flee her post for reasons unknown to the public

She is branded a traitor, a terrorist, and the most wanted woman in the world
