“It’s not that easy.”
“Why?”
He set the empty cup down and pushed fingers through his hair. Tondi got how Zuria loved this man. He was drop-dead gorgeous, and his muscular build could have a woman’s mouth watering. Of course, he was just eye candy for her. She didn’t need anyone but Sam.
“I want Zuria to accept Sam.”
She shook her head. “I don’t see that being the problem. That girl has a strong love for her brother. I’ve seen that firsthand.” He gave her apologetic look, but she ignored it. “She’ll embrace all of what Sam is soon enough.”
“You’re probably right, but…” He hesitated.
“She’s insecure about you, isn’t she?”
His eyes widened. “How did you know that?”
“I guess I know the type. We—I mean shifters—have insane confidence. I think it’s encoded in our DNA, but as a woman, I question myself too. I know I have to balance taking care of myself and letting Sam care for me. Zuria seems to love you, but you keeping a secret like that, it feels like you didn’t trust her.”
He paled. “I trust her. It wasn’t my secret to keep. Sam wanted to protect her.”
“Sam and his damn protection.”
Fane chuckled, and she welcomed that usual smile on his face.
“Okay, how about I talk to her?”
“You don’t have to do that.”
“I want to. It’s settled.” She whirled on her heel before he could say more and left the shop without talking to Sam. She had no idea if he would tell her not to interfere, so he could find out she did later. If this was going to be her new home and Fane and Zuria her family, then she might as well start acting like it.
* * * *
Tondi found Zuria on the front steps of a tiny house on the west side of Aves. When Tondi pulled into the slip of a driveway, Zuria stood up, eyes wide.
“How did you find me?”
Tondi smiled as she strode up to the steps and shrugged. There was no need to explain she’d scented her, and it wasn’t so hard with the size of the town. “Is this a friend’s house? You’ve moved out of Fane’s place?”
Zuria clenched her hands at her sides and sat down. “My stuff is still at his house.”
“Meaning you’re going back?”
Zuria crossed her arms over her chest. “I don’t know yet. I might need to get my own apartment.”
“Maybe you should.”
Zuria blinked and stared at Tondi. “I thought you were here to convince me to go back to him.”
“Why should I? If you don’t know if you love him enough to accept his decision, split up.”
“I can’t believe you said that.”
Tondi forced a casual laugh and waved her hand. “Please, girl, you know what kind of man you have. Other women should be so lucky. Before you get up in arms, I’m not saying you should stay with him because you won’t get better. I’m saying you know what you have. You know Fane loves you, but you also get that he’s not perfect. No one is. He loves you, but he also loves Sam.”
“He’s like a freakin’ loyal dog to Sam.”
“Yeah, so?”
Zuria sighed. “I get it. I love Sam like that too, and from the sound of it, Fane is so devoted to Sam because of what happened to his parents. In a way, Sam needs Fane, and Fane has decided he won’t ever turn his back on him.”
“What about you?”
“What about me? I’m not going to walk away from my brother because of him not being fully human. It scares me, yes, but he’s been my baby brother from day one. That’s never changing.”
“So?”
Zuria slapped a hand on the steps. “What do you want from me?”
Tondi offered a genuine laugh this time. “Okay, what I want is for you to be my sister. I’ve never had one, and I think you know now Sam and I are bonded. I’m not going anywhere. We can be friends if you reject the sister idea.”
Zuria grinned. “Maybe. Okay, I’m sorry. I was wrong. You’re nuts over him, aren’t you? Is it because you’re the same?”
“Yes and no. We were meant for each other, but come on. Sam’s all that.”
Zuria burst out laughing. “I’d like it if we could become closer, and you’re right. I have to forgive Fane. In fact, there’s nothing to forgive. It hurt my feelings to be left out, but I understand the reasoning. I wasn’t going to stay gone anyway.”
“Oh, I know. You two might not be shifters, but you’re bonded. No doubt about it.” Tondi stood and drew Zuria to her feet. “Now come on and let’s put Fane out of his misery.”
“Is he that bad?”
“Girl, he’s stupid over you.”
A look of sheer delight came over Zuria’s countenance, and they drove back to the restaurant together. As soon as Zuria walked through the entrance, Fane spotted her and flew across the room. He stopped feet from her, his gaze drinking her in. Zuria, just as dumbfounded, stood before him unmoving. Sam happened by and gave his sister a shove so she tumbled into Fane’s arms. They were mouth to mouth in a heartbeat, and a cheer went up in the restaurant.
Tondi sighed. “All in a day’s work.”
Sam drew her to his side with a possessive arm about her waist. He touched his lips to her neck, and a thrill raced through her system. She raised a hand to his cheek and stroked.
“Sam Belle, you and I need to have a little talk in your office.”
Tondi drew him to the back and into his office. She slammed the door and thrust him against it, pressing the length of her body along his. Sam surrendered, allowing her to thrust his apron aside, unbutton his pants, and stick her hand inside to find his hard cock. Desperate need came over her, and she squeezed the thick head before running a thumb over the tip.
Sam growled. He took hold of her arms and flipped her around so that she thumped the door, and he trapped her there. He snatched up the hemline of her dress and thrust her panties aside. The next instant, he invaded her wet pussy with his cock, grinding hard and fast. She opened her mouth to scream in ecstasy, but he clapped a hand over her lips. Again and again, he pounded into her, making her dizzy with pleasure, bringing her body to the edge of an orgasm.
“Sam,” she moaned.
Her lover pulled out and stepped back. She reached blindly for him, not done yet, but Sam rushed to his desk and fumbled through the drawers.
“What are you doing? I need to come, Sam.”
He didn’t answer, but continued to search. At last, he produced a condom and snapped it on. Tondi landed on the desktop where he thrust her, and he filled her once again. Her legs wide and high, she had no control over their lovemaking. Sam forgot all gentleness and ravaged her body. He tore the front of her dress open and dragged her bra down so he could suck her nipples. He pounded her pussy, the friction of his movements rubbing over her clit. She came, screaming behind his hand, but her lover still didn’t stop until he found his own release.
Sam pulled out and backed away, breathing rough and noisy. He popped the condom off and threw it into the trash. “I was thinking of asking you to work here.”
She slid to the edge of the desk, her pussy throbbing. “Um, not a good idea.”
He nodded in agreement.
She stood up and attempted to straighten her ruined dress. “I’m going home to shower and change. Then I think I’ll go job hunting.”
She started to walk away, but he stopped her. A hand at her nape held her tight to him, and she sighed, breathing in his now familiar scent. Her heart stirred. She slid her arms around his neck and remained still for a few moments.
“Sam, I’m so glad I found you.”
“Never leave.”
“Oh, baby,” she breathed. “I’m here to stay.”
