Jason drew out of my quivering pussy and lifted me onto the bed in a kneeling position. He knelt behind me and drove deep into me again. His hands rounded my hips and held me in place while he fucked me, hitting all my sweet spots and driving me to another orgasm.

“Fuck, Daphne,” he groaned. “Sweet, sweet Daphne.”

  “Yes,” I moaned.

“You’re mine,” he rasped through gritted teeth. “Every sweet inch—mine.”

I gripped the sheet, my moans an incoherent babble. My body hurtled out of control again, and I screamed his name as an orgasm shattered me all the way to my bones.

I heard him say my name. I heard him groan as he plunged deep and poured his hot release inside me. I tried to catch my breath, unable to move. He let go of my waist then slowly pulled out of me, leaving me shuddering as aftershocks of pleasure moved through me

He rolled onto his back, pulling me with him so I lay over him, our heated skin slick where we touched. “Was that fast and hard enough for you?”

I blew out a shaky breath, too weak to laugh, my whole body still trembling as I tried to drag air into my lungs. “What do you think?”

He bit my lower lip lightly, and I shivered.

“I think we should do this more often,” I suggested. “It might take some time to get it just right.” Like every single lunch hour until the end of time.

Jason laughed. “Sounds good to me.” He took my lips again then rolled over and got out of bed. “I’m starving.”

We cleaned up and fixed our clothes before descending on the dishes. There was a lot of food, including grilled salmon, roasted potatoes, and a delightfully crunchy salad. It was delicious.

“One minute I think we’re having lunch in your office, and the next I’m having a decadent afternoon of sex and food.”

Jason chuckled. “There was no way I was ever going to sit across a table from you and not think about fucking you. Getting a room seemed like the prudent thing to do.”

“I remember sitting at a table with you at your parents’ and you barely even looked at me.”

He laughed. “Are you kidding? I was this close to dragging you into the next room and fucking your brains out.”

I almost choked on my water. “I’d have gone with you, gladly.”

He gave me a knowing look. “Dirty girl.”

  “I know.”

He lips lifted in that crooked smile I loved, and he reached across to stroke my face. “I don’t ever want us to fight.”

I was quiet. I knew I shouldn’t push it, but I couldn’t act as if his mother’s desire to be a part of his life was nothing, not when I would give almost anything for just one word, one day with my own.

“There are things you should at least try to make me understand,” I said.

“Fair enough.” He nodded. “When I was in college, I found out where my mother lived. I went to L.A and tried to talk to her. She never picked up her phone, so I went to her home in one of those artist communes…” He made a face. “I knocked on her door with my heart in my mouth. I was finally going to see my mother again. She was finally going to tell me why she left—at least that’s what I thought would happen.” He laughed bitterly.

  “What happened?”

He shook his head. “It was like I was a little boy again, missing the mother who used to paint colorful paintings I didn’t understand but loved anyway.” He paused and looked at me. “She knew who I was. I didn’t have to introduce myself. She took one look at me, and it was like…like I was her worst nightmare. She said she wanted nothing to do with me, told me not to come back.” His eyes watered as he remembered, and my heart broke. “It was the worst fucking day of my life,” he finished with a shrug.

I stared at him, my eyes watering, unable to believe that any mother would do that to her son. “I’m so sorry. Jason, I can’t…I’m sorry.” I got up and went to put my arms around him, hoping to provide even a small measure of comfort to make up for the pain I’d forced him to remember.

  Chapter Eight

“Thanks for coming with me,” Amy said nervously, sucking in a breath through her teeth. We were seated at one of the arrival lounges at the airport, waiting for Colin’s flight to arrive.

I could tell she was anxious. She kept scrolling through her phone and tapping her free hand on her knee. In a way, I understood why she felt like she had reason to be as she hadn’t seen Colin for almost three weeks, but I knew if anybody had any reason never to be nervous about her relationship, it was Amy.

“Hey look,” she said. “Jason posted on his Insta. It’s a picture of you.”

“Seriously?” I frowned and unlocked my phone, launching the app and tapping on the notifications. It was the only social media app I used with any regularity. My bio was limited to my work as an assistant editor at JH publishing, and my posts were usually image-quotes from books I loved and books we published.

Jason had one of those verified profiles with zero posts and no followers at all. He wasn’t big on social media.

Yet, I saw a notification from him, which led to the picture he’d posted, which he’d tagged me in. It was a sweet black and white of us at the beach house where he’d told me he loved me. He was kissing my neck, and I was smiling. He’d captioned it “Happiness.”

An absurd amount of happiness coursed through me and I smiled. “Wow!”

“Awwww,” Amy trilled. “It’s so sweet! You two are so perfect together.” She stopped and frowned. “Did he ever talk to you about his mother?”

I sighed. “He did, and now I understand why he feels the way he does. I feel bad that I ever pushed the subject at all.”

“I told you he would tell you when he was ready.” She shook her head. “It’s not an easy topic for him.”

From the loudspeaker, the announcer called out another arrival, and we looked at the big screens where the numbers were displayed. Amy started tapping her hand again, and I covered it with mine.

“Relax,” I told her. “Everything will be fine.”

“I know.” She smiled weakly. “I’m just so nervous.”

“I can see that, but I don’t know why. You guys talk every day. I’m sure you have nothing to be nervous about.”

“I don’t know. Three weeks is a long time. What if he’s changed? What if he met someone more…English? What if there was a meet-cute on the plane and now he’s met the real love of his life? A movie star.” She gave me a droopy frown then chuckled. “Okay, I know that’s ridiculous. My mind just keeps drumming up irrational fears, and I can’t stop it.”

“Those fears are so that when you finally see him, the change from anxiety to happiness is much more dramatic,” I said. “It’s nature’s way of making sure you stay in love with him.”

  Amy frowned. “Is that true?”

“I have no idea.” I shrugged. “I just made it up because my roommate is fretting unnecessarily about her perfect, one-in-a-million boyfriend.”

She chuckled. “Thanks. It good to laugh about it.” There was another announcement over the speakers, and she got up. “He’s here.”

“Come on, Amy. Have a seat. It’ll take a while before he gets through the customs people. Just relax.”

She took a deep breath then sat beside me again.

“Have I said thanks for coming with me?”

  I nodded. “Twice.”

She chuckled. “I love you, Daphne, I really do.”

I put my arm around her. “I love you too, Amy Wild.”

We drew apart and a few minutes later, Amy’s face lit up as she dashed from her seat and ran up to where Colin was pulling a small piece of luggage through a pair of wide sliding glass doors.

She ran through the people milling around and launched herself into his arms. He let the suitcase fall to the ground as he gathered her to his body.

I got up, watching and smiling as they kissed and laughed then kissed and laughed again. A few people stopped to give them looks, but most of them just kept going until Co
lin drew back, kissed Amy again, and got to his knees.

“Oh my God!” I screamed, my eyes widening as I quickly opened the video app on my phone. I gathered Amy’s bag and mine and ran across the packed terminal, my phone held out in front of me as I tried to capture the moment my best friend would say yes to the man she loved.

I reached them just as Amy covered her face with her hands, laughing and crying at the same time. “Oh my God, Colin! Oh my God.”

He grinned. “I haven’t even said anything.”

“Then say it!” she cried, provoking amused laughter from a few onlookers.

Colin pulled a box out of his pocket. “I was going to wait a while,” he said, “but I can’t. I really don’t want to.” He took a deep breath. “Will you marry me, Amy Temperance Wild?”

“Damn right I will, you sexy Englishman!” She drew him to his feet, planting kisses all over his face while people cheered.

“Congratulations!” I called from behind my phone. I was taking my documentary duties very seriously.

  They both grinned at me.

“Good to see you, Daph.” Colin exhaled. “Good to see you.”

“Good to see you, too.” I finally stopped the video and joined them for a group hug. I stepped back, and they kissed again. “I’m so happy for you two.”

Amy hugged Colin tight, all her nervousness from earlier turned into a clear bliss. “Thank you,” she mouthed at me.

  “Any time,” I replied.

Later, after the cab had delivered Amy and Colin to his apartment, I directed the driver to drop me off at Jason’s place. I let myself in. I knew Jason wasn’t at home because he’d had to go to the office earlier.

The apartment was quiet. Somehow, it already felt like home. I suppose in a way it was since it was where Jason lived, and wherever he was, that would be my home.

  For always.

One day, we would make it official, I was sure of that. I would promise to be his in front of everyone we knew and loved. It was something I’d always thought was impossible, something that wasn’t for me. Now, when I thought about it, I knew it would be the happiest day of my life.

I went to the bedroom and took off my shoes, placing them in the part of the walk-in closet that already contained a year’s worth of clothes, shoes, and accessories for me. They’d been delivered by a personal shopper, and all I had to do was pick out the ones I liked and send back the ones I didn’t. It was unnecessary and extravagant, but Jason claimed he wanted to make sure I never lacked anything when I spent the night.

Just as I contemplated whether to wait for Jason in the bed, the doorbell rang, and I frowned. I knew it couldn’t be Jason because he wouldn’t have to ring the bell.

I slipped my feet into a pair of slippers and made my way to the foyer. There was a small panel in the wall close to the door, and inside was a screen that showed the area just outside. It revealed Vince, one of the doormen from the downstairs reception desk.

  I opened the door.

“Sorry to disturb you, ma’am,” he said politely. “There’s someone downstairs to see Mr. Wild. She’s not on the visitor’s list, but she…” He paused.

“She what?” I prompted, my hackles rising.

  “She says she’s his mother.”

My mind raced. I thought about calling Jason. Admittedly, that would have been the best thing to do.

“Have you tried to call Jason?” I asked.

  “Yes. He’s unavailable.”

I knew that even if he was in a meeting, he might pick up if I called him, but I was sure that if Jason knew she was here, he would only send her away.

I decided to talk to her.

“Why don’t you take me to her, Vince?”

I followed him down to reception. There was a small waiting area partially closed off from the main entrance with a couple of seats and low tables, almost like a hotel lobby. On one of the seats, a dark-haired woman was waiting.

I approached her, not quite sure what I was going to say. She’d cruelly abandoned the man I loved, and she’d broken his heart when he went to find her. I wanted her to explain how she could bear to treat her son like that.

I reached her seat, and she looked me up and down.

“You’re not Jason,” she said. She had a lilting voice and a beautiful face that middle age hadn’t affected. Jason looked a lot like his father, but he had her gray eyes.

“He’s not here,” I informed her. “He had to go to work.”

“Mhmm.” She pursed her lips. “And you’re the girlfriend?”

I folded my arms, suddenly feeling defensive. “What do you want?”

“I want to talk to my son.’

“Why now?” I challenged. “You sent him away when he wanted to talk to you.”

She raised her eyebrow in a way that reminded me so much of Jason, I was momentarily taken aback. “He told you that? Grant is right, then—things are serious between you two.”

I was confused. “You talked to Grant?”

She waved a hand. “He sends me an email about once a month, ever since Jason graduated college. He keeps me updated, in the loop, at least until…at least for now.”

“Jason doesn’t know that,” I said, fairly sure I was correct. It must have meant she still cared—maybe not enough to stay, but enough to want to know what was going on in his life. I lowered myself into the seat opposite her. “Why are you here now, after all this time?”

She sighed tiredly. “You know, just before I got here, I got lost for a little bit. I forgot why I came all this way. I just wandered around until I remembered again.” She chuckled, leaving me wondering what was so funny about getting lost. “I need to talk to Jason,” she said again. “And you too.”

I was getting more confused. “About what?”

“About something you both need to know.” She paused. “Do you plan to have children?”

I let out a confused chuckle. “Look, I don’t see how that’s any of your concern.”

“You wouldn’t, would you?” She smiled. “Oh well, I might as well tell you.”

“Tell me what?” I asked, though I was sure whatever it was, I didn’t want to hear it.

“That you should leave him now while you still can,” she said in a low voice, “because I’m going to kill him, and he’s going to break your heart and kill any children you’ll ever have.”
