Oh, the Seelie Court. I had left so many people behind there. Would they be happy to see me? Even when they realized the girl they had teased in the ballroom was their friend? Gab would be happy no doubt, but the others were harder to guess. Fae friends were hard to come by and even harder to keep. Not like the human world.

And what of my human friends? Would they quickly forget me when I never showed up to work? And my human mother? We never got along, and she was always criticizing my choices, but she’s still my mom. Not to forget the rest of my family. I couldn’t do to them what I had done to those in the Underground.

While it had been over a century for the Underground, it was like yesterday for me. I didn’t know how I was supposed to answer their questions. I had no doubt they would be like Dorian – desperate to understand – and I wouldn’t be able to give them more than I had given him. Soon they would realize I wasn’t the princess they had mourned all these years. I wasn’t even sure who I was, not really. But I knew who I wasn’t. I wasn’t a princess, Fae or not.

“So, my lovely, what are you going to be? A rose or a dandelion?” He held his hand out to me, the offer as obvious as the nose on my face.

He could take me home. Get me out of there before they forced me into a choice I didn’t make. Even in my state of panic, I could tell he really wanted me to take his hand. To choose the human world over the Fae, and maybe even a part of him that was too afraid to admit it, wanted me to choose him over the courts.

  But could I do it?

Before my mind had been completely made up, my hand slid into his. As I stepped through the mirror, I didn’t think about what I was leaving behind, but rather what I was returning to. Maybe, just maybe, even where I truly belonged.
