The Kitchen Maid Page 42

by Val Wood

‘What are you doing?’ Billy, coming back in, stroked her long dark hair, running his fingers through it. He had undressed and put on a maroon dressing robe.

She looked up at him through the mirror on the wall above her and smiled. ‘I’ve just finished writing about the end of one life.’ She glanced down at the words she had written. I have married Billy, the butcher boy, who has always loved me.

She turned towards him and put her hands out to him. He drew her up and kissed her tenderly. ‘Tomorrow’, she whispered, ‘I will write ’beginning of another.’
