But meeting Brianna and being with her is easy. It feels so right.
That wasn’t the same thing. He was holding onto that. They could do long distance and still be a couple.
“You’re thinking so hard.” Brianna said behind him. “I can almost see smoke coming out your ears.
“Hah hah.” He turned to her and rolled his eyes. “You should be a comedian.”
“Who tells you I’m not. Some of my books are funny.”
“Hey, I need to read one of your books.” He pulled her between his legs as she came near.
She put her hands on his shoulders. “Don’t.”
There was a warning in her tone.
“Why?”
“Because they are addictive and I don’t want to add you to the list of people who stalk me about what book is next. I sleep with you and eventually when we get more serious… well I won’t have any escape.” She winked.
He was startled she was thinking ahead like that. Monroe knew he was, but he hadn’t known she was.
“And from your expression I can see I shocked you.” She wrinkled her nose. “Let me guess you didn’t think I was thinking of our future. Really, Monroe you’re not the only one in this relationship.”
“Relationship.” He cleared his throat. “You never said that is what we were in.”
“Do I need to take out a billboard to say it?” She frowned. “I told you my history. You’re only my second serious relationship ever. And that is a feat since I didn’t think I would ever trust anyone else to get close enough to be a couple again. Of course we are in a relationship.”
“And couple.” He put his hand over his heart. “Woman you never said any of these things.”
“I shouldn’t have too. I did it without words. I showed you.” She stared at him pointedly. “Remember that putting thing in box thing.”
He remembered it. When she had said it he dismissed it. Now he thought of it and the weeks they had been together. And his heart raced.
“Brianna… yeah you are right I have a tendency to not see things right in front of me.”
“Duh… I know that. I still love you anyway.”
“You love me.” He breathed out.
“I’m quickly rethinking that.” She glared at him then pushed his hands away.
She walked away. Monroe sat there stunned and not even sure what happened. She said she loved him then left angry at him for some reason.
Dunderhead you are only her second relationship ever. That probably means you’re only the second man she ever said she loved too. And look how that worked out with the first one. So of course she walks away. She’s scared. Get up and go after her. The voice in his head sounded so much like his mama. And you are still sitting there. God help me before I kick my son’s ass to give him some sense.
Monroe rose and hurried after her. He went in and to the living room. He paused in the doorway. She sat next to Lila her puppy. The puppy lifted his head and glared at him as if it knew she knew he had done something to make her mistress mad. He went to Brianna and sat next to her. She wouldn’t look at him. She petted the puppy. Monroe touched her face and turned it to him.
“I love you, Brianna.”
She blew out a breath. “I know that. And it terrifies me.”
“I won’t ever hurt you.”
“I know that.” She scowled. “I’m terrified that I’ll convince you to go home to Texas and you won’t want to, really. Then you’ll resent me for it.”
“I’m going home to Texas.” He said.
“See that is what I didn’t want to happen.” She shook her head. “Don’t do it for me.”
“I’m doing it for me.” And that was true.
He’d been struggling with staying here because he knew in his heart it wasn’t the right place for him.
“Really?” There was hope in her voice.
“Yes. Too hell with if this was too easy for us to be together.”
“Easy.” She lifted an eyebrow the laughed. “Yeah if easy is meeting a woman with so much baggage while having something of your own that is painful you are dealing with. Nothing is easy Monroe. And certainly not us.” She smiled. “And I predict that it won’t ever be easy but it will be worth it.”
“Yes.” He pulled her close. “This is something that neither of us expected.”
“Yes. And someday when we are old and grey.” She looked at him. “Well with more grey in your hair we’ll look back at this fondly.”
“You’re thinking of getting old with me.”
She sighed. “That box thing again. I’m gonna have to work on that with you. In the old and you’ll be grey since I will be dying my hair to look sexy and all that.” She winked. “We’ll think about this time and how we each embraced something new.”
He agreed with her so he didn’t say anything. Monroe pulled her in and kissed her. Yes they had both taken a chance on something new.
