And I'm running toward her desperate to see that she's safe but there are Orbans on my tail, catching up to me as they see me dash from the ship.

"That bastard pushed the self-destruct button," one of them yells and I turn around and see that he's joined by four others who are eager to see me die, but it isn't until it's too late that I realize one of them is Saurad. He takes a running jump and lands on my back. I fall face first in the mud, slapping my limbs up and down as I struggle to shake him off. He punches me in the back of the head so that I can taste the dirt and feel the grittiness of the rocks and dust on my tongue.

“Bastard!” I yell as I flip over onto my back.

I kick Saurad in the stomach sending him reeling back but I’ve only winded him and he comes at me once again.

“You traitor!” he shouts and punches me once again, his knuckles connecting with my jaw.

I can hear the bones in my face break as he hits me. His face, that is supposed to be blue, is now purple with rage with sweat dripping from his brow. His tail is violently swaying from side to side out of the bottom of his robe as we circle each other with our fists raised in a peculiar dance of death.

  “I’ll kill you, Voland.”

“You couldn’t. You’re not strong enough, you’re nothing but Palzu’s whipping boy.”

Hearing this, he lunges at me and hits me in the eye. My vision blurs and all I can see is the blurry outline of Saurad as he lands another punch on my face.

“Twenty seconds until self-destruction,” the voice from the ship warns us.

“We don’t have time for this!” I shout at Saurad as I clutch my already swollen eye.

As I look at his face I see his eyes are wild and his lips wet with spit and blood. He looks like a rabid animal with nothing to lose.

“If I’m going to die then I’m taking you with me.”

He jumps on me and I tumble backward into the mud, stuck in the confines of its stickiness.

  “No!”

I punch him hard in the face.

  “Ten seconds until self-destruction.”

He kicks me in the stomach and the breath is knocked out of me as I land on my knees. I try to stand up but he’s coming at me again with his left foot flying toward my head.

  “Five seconds until self-destruction.”

With a final eruption of energy, I leap up and send my fist surging into his nose, a torrent of blood flooding down his face and I’m running for my life.

  “Felicity!”

I reach her as the ship begins to shake. The farmers scarpered long ago, escaping in their trucks as soon as they heard the warnings of destruction, but Felicity never left. She was waiting for me the whole time, even though she knew it meant she could die.

I tackle her around her waist and push her to the ground just as the ship detonates behind me. Rocks and rubble fly past our heads as we hit the dirt, dust, and turf whipping at our bodies as we hold our hands over our ears. Felicity is screaming but I can’t hear a word she’s saying. All I can see is her wide, open mouth as her eyes clench shut and the wind tears at her hair.

  Then silence.

  Chapter 19

  Felicity

My ears are ringing but beyond the tinnitus is the sound of voices. They’re close by but they’re moving closer.

  “Any sign of the traitor?”

“No. Maybe he was atomized in the blast.”

“Perhaps but let us search for him. Don’t leave any stone unturned.”

It’s Saurad. I can recognize his insidious voice even in my semi-conscious state. Opening my eyes, I see that although he is a few feet away from me, he hasn’t noticed me and it’s then that I realize I’m covered by debris. There are small rocks and twigs all over me and leaves in my hair. My mouth tastes like sand and grass and feels as dry as a desert.

I manage to take a deep breath and regain my bearings. My eyes are gritty but I can just about see out of them through a gap in the debris. Saurad and his troops are still searching for Voland. I thought he was with me, I was sure of it but why isn’t he beside me right now? I push a hand through the wreckage in the hope of contacting him but all I feel is rock and more dirt.

“Sir? He’s not here,” a voice says.

“Are you definitely sure?” Saurad inquires.

“We are sure, Sir. There is no sign of him. We have checked everywhere.”

“Let us be on our way then.”

The footsteps walk away and it isn’t long until I hear them dissipate altogether. Pushing some of the debris aside, I’m able to sit up. Saurad is far in the distance and I take my chance. Propping myself up on shaky legs, I run across the field.

  “Voland?”

I’m back in the corn field but it’s all burned now, scorched by the blast.

  “Voland?”

He’s nowhere to be seen. I run faster, desperate to see him again. Hurrying down to the river, I look for any sign of him, for a clue that he left me behind, but all I see are the footprints we left there earlier.

  “Voland!”

My voice bounces across the landscape.

With no other option, I walk back to the hotel. News traveled quickly and there are emergency services speeding down the main road. People stare at me as I limp along the sidewalk.

  “Miss, are you ok?”

An old woman is beside me, stroking the side of my arm and pointing to a bloody wound on my leg.

“I’m ok,” I say. “I just need to find a friend.”

I wave my hand dismissively and continue to walk. Eventually, I reach the hotel and climb the stairs to the room. Tears are falling from my cheeks but I barely register them. I can’t feel a thing as I push open the door. All I think of is Voland and as I walk inside, I see him lying on the bed face down with a pillow held over his head. He’s snoring heavily and covered in dust and mud.

  “Voland!”

I dive onto the bed and shake him but he doesn’t wake up. He mutters something as he dreams and snorts and snores even louder. I can’t help but smile and snuggle up beside him as I begin to sob.

“I thought you were dead,” I snivel. “Don’t you dare leave me again.”

  Epilogue

  Voland

I’m walking home with the keys to our new apartment in my hand. They feel strange and jagged but I’ve never been so pleased to hold such small chunks of metal. They may be tiny in size but they are huge in significance. They are the keys to our future. I push them in the lock and push open the door. I’m greeted with the smell of dinner in the oven and Felicity wearing nothing but her panties.

“How did your interview go?” she asks as she saunters over to me.

I watch as her hips sway from side to side hypnotically. Reaching out, I grab her by the waist and pull her close to kiss her.

“It went well, I think. They seemed to like me and it’s all thanks to you.”

“It’s nothing. I’m happy to help. You think they fell for the fake resume?”

“I think so but I don’t like lying to people. They were asking about all these jobs I’d had before and I just nodded and smiled and made stuff up on the spot.”

“Don’t worry about it. Everyone lies on their resume.”

She laughs and winds her fingers around my tie, pulling me close to her so that my chest is pushing up against her bare breasts.

“If everyone lies then what’s the point?”

She kisses me hard and pulls my hands to her body. I can’t resist and push her down into the couch, grinding my already hard cock against her. She’s moaning as I slide my hand down the front of her underwear and rub her slick wetness while she tears desperately at my pants. My belt hits the floor with a clunk and she’s popping the buttons off my pants so they scatter across the floorboards.

“I want to treat you,” she whispers in my ear.

And she’s caressing my erection and easing it inside her, chewing on her lower lip as she gyrates her hips up and down in a steady motion.

&nbs
p; “Hmmm…. Yeah like that. I want you so deep inside me.”

Her cheeks are flushed and I lean forward and kiss them as I stroke the hair out of her eyes. She’s whispering as she rocks back and forth.

  “Baby, baby…”

And she flings her head back and closes her eyes tight as she loses herself to the feeling of me thrusting in and out of her.

  “Ooooh, harder, HARDER!”

I grip her hips tightly until my nails are making little arcs in her skin. She’s screaming and opening her legs wide so that we’re both spilling onto the floor as we tumble off the couch but I don’t care because I’m close to coming. I fuck her as hard as my body will allow with my throbbing penis in pain from the sheer engorgement of blood in the tip.

  “Aaaargh!”

I roar through clenched teeth as my buttocks clench tight and thrust even harder, taking control of her body until, at last, she’s trembling and shaking with her face twisted up with pure ecstasy.

  “Oh, my God!” she yells.

And we’re coming together, our bodies tangled and sweaty as they stick to one another, quivering with intense pleasure. Then we’re limp and exhausted, our bodies glued to the cold floorboards with the sweat that’s dripping from our limbs.

“That was the best,” she gasps.

  “It was.”

With great effort, I gulp in a lungful of air and sit up.

“You look so beautiful,” I say. “When I get a job are you going to welcome me home like this every day?”

She laughs and gets up, sashaying over to the banister where her bathrobe is hanging. She pulls it over her tight, elegant body and walks into the kitchen. Checking on the dish in the oven, she turns the heat up and comes back through to sit beside me with two glasses of red wine.

“I’ll welcome you like that every day for the rest of our lives if you want.”

She kisses me softly on the lips then takes a sip of her drink.

“So, I got a promotion today.”

She smiles with her lips stained from the wine.

  “Really?”

I hug her tight. Since she began working as an admin assistant last month she’s been working every extra hour possible and trying her hardest to make a good impression.

“I’m so proud of you,” I say. “You’ve done so well.”

“I’m proud of you too. After all, coming to grips with the minefield that is the American job market can’t be easy for an alien.”

“It’s all so crazy,” I say. “It’s pretty scary.”

“Not as scary as Saurad, those spaceships, and the explosion!”

  “That’s true.”

We both laugh but I can see a hint of sadness in Felicity’s eyes. She looks away from me and into the kitchen.

  “What’s the matter?”

I hold a finger below her chin and pull her face back toward me.

  “Nothing.”

  She pulls away.

  “I don’t believe you.”

She sighs and drains her glass of wine.

“It’s just that… They won’t find us, will they?”

“Saurad and his troops? Believe me, if they thought I survived this blast they would have found me again.”

  “Are you sure?”

  “Positive.”

A wave of relief washes through her body and I see her relax back into the couch.

  “I hope you’re right.”

Crawling my fingers up her thigh, I gently move my hand underneath her bathrobe. She bites on her lower lip again, a habit of hers I know always precedes a good time.

“You wanna go upstairs for round two?” she asks.

  “More than anything!”

She giggles as I pick her up and hold her tight. Wrapping her legs around my waist, she nuzzles in close and kisses my neck, her hot breath sending tingles down my spine.

  “You’ll be careful… won’t you?”

Her voice is little more than a whisper and I lean back to see her face.

“Why would you say something like that?”

“I couldn’t bear to lose you. I love you too much,” she says. “Not after all we’ve been through.”

“I’m not going anywhere and Saurad isn’t coming back,” And I love you too. There’s nothing to worry about. Earth is my home now.”

  Chapter 1-Benzen

I think it’s all working out with our escape plan, everything going as it should. I think so right up until the very last minute, when the engine fails. It comes as a violent shudder, the sound of metal crunching and stuttering, coughing like a dying old man before giving out completely. The next thing I feel is the terror inside my gut as we hit a speed I scarcely thought possible.

We’re tumbling, flying, falling fast down to the nearest planet. I see it come closer, a glowing blue orb the color of lightning bolts and vegetation. For a moment, as we plummet down at breakneck speed, I wonder what the puffy, white substance is that caresses the atmosphere of the world we’re about to land on. I ponder it until we’re right in the middle of its softness and realize they’re clouds. They moisten the sides of the ship as we stab through them, a ball of mechanical fire falling to disintegration.

The ground comes up fast, then faster, then faster still until I hold my breath, certain that we will crumble upon impact. Glancing around at my crew, I see them more terrified than I am. Victorinth, her eyes are ablaze in fear, her gaze following mine out t
he window as the ship falls sideways. She’s holding onto her seat, gripping it as though it’s the last connection she has to her life before it became a disaster, before we felt the fear of falling.

Our eyes meet over the chaos, panic surging between us like a tangible energy. Horror is etched into Victorinth’s face, and I see her lips twitch as she tries to tell me something, but I don’t hear a word. All that enters my ears are the rapid sounds of the craft cracking up around me and the rush of air as it escapes through the gaps in the falling wreckage. It hits my face, cold and caustic, the force almost burning my skin.

The last thing I see before we crash is a large building on the edge of a city. If I knew of its importance to the crew, I would have feared nothing, but in that moment, I’m stricken with an intense fear, one that grows the closer we get.

It’s right before my eyes, the ground black with symmetrical white stripes, and it’s coming up fast. I resign myself to fate, it will swallow me up and I will live no more. There’s a crunch, Victorinth screams, and the crew falls into a mass of tangled-up terror as the ship splinters at the edges.

Before the blackness arrives, I look up and see the large building beside us. There’s a sign on the wall in an alphabet I’m not familiar with.

  RICHMOND CITY MALL

I squint in an attempt to decipher the symbols, but as I strain my eyes, shock takes over my body. Then, nothing but darkness.

  ***

My eyes are stinging, blistering with the pain of unseen molecules. It would seem where we’ve landed has something in the air we’re not used to. It takes a few breaths to adjust to the light. It’s like nothing I’ve seen before. The sky is dark like the blackest onyx, but every now and again, items are illuminated, like buildings or vehicles of sorts. As I glance out the window, I can see there are various other crafts. Some are larger than others and in different colors, but they are mostly of similar length, or at least much smaller than our craft.
