The sound of sirens filled the air and dragged me back to reality.

‘Abbie,’ Marcus said, his voice warm and low in my ear.

‘What do we tell the police?’ I stammered, not looking at Lilly, not looking at the shattered glass, the blood pooling at our feet, or the empty spot where Rem had stood. Only looking at Marcus and seeing only him.

‘The truth,’ he said, offering a small smile. ‘Well, some of it.’

  ‘Rem?’

He paused. When he replied, his voice was tight. ‘I don’t know. I don’t think he’ll be back.’

His words weren’t a question, but I answered him anyhow. ‘No. He won’t be back.’

‘Abbie.’ Marcus paused. The sirens were getting closer. ‘Tonight, when I saw Rem in here, with you…’

  ‘Yes?’

‘I remembered what happened before,’ he explained. ‘At Broadhurst. I remember Anne telling me about you two. I remember seeing you together and accusing him…’

I blinked at him, the image of Heath Lockwood’s tombstone flashing before my eyes. ‘Yes?’ I urged.

‘He got angry,’ he whispered, and I knew what he was telling me. His brother had killed him. Killed him, then killed Penelope, over something he had never understood.

I nodded. He didn’t need to say anything more.

‘C’mon,’ he whispered, linking his fingers through mine.

I glanced at the carnage in the library, which had been captured by the security camera in the corner. My eyes fell on the closed book.

‘Wait,’ I cried, and scurried back to the desk, scooping it up.

I needed to keep it. It was the one death that I didn’t remember, but the one that had somehow saved me this time.

‘What’s this?’ he asked, raising an eyebrow as he noted the title. Love Stories.

‘There’s a story in here you might like to read. About Penelope and Heath.’

He blinked at me. ‘Yes. I think I would.’

He draped an arm around my shoulders, and I snuggled beneath it, feeling somewhat lighter, despite everything I’d been through that day.

Outside, a cavalcade of police and ambulance drivers were assembling, and I steeled myself. We had a lot of explaining to do. But I felt safer than I had done in a long time.

Rem wouldn’t hurt me anymore. He wouldn’t hurt me again.

As I walked into the night with Marcus, a gentle rain began to fall. It’d been months since it had rained, and now it fell in a soft patter, as if it would wash the earth. Baptise and make pure everything that was wrong.

I felt as if I was leaving behind everything I’d done and everyone I used to be. Lifting my face towards the heavens, I opened my mouth, feeling the cool air on my skin, catching the rain on my tongue.

  Hindsight

  Sarah Belle

Humour, wit, and just a touch of humility: the swinging 60s as you’ve never seen thembefore.

The universe has sent Juliette a sign. She wishes it had been an email instead…

Juliette’s career is on fire, her marriage and family are in melt-down, and a red-hot goddess wants her husband. But those are the least of her worries when she wakes up on her lounge room floor in the year 1961.

Without any of her modern conveniences—nanny, housekeeper, surgically attached mobile phone, designer wardrobe, and intravenous lattes—Juliette is just over fifty years out of her comfort zone. But as she takes on the role of a 1961 housewife, with gritted liberated teeth, she discovers an unexpected truth: slower doesn’t mean boring, at home doesn’t mean dull, and priorities don’t mean sacrifices.

As she finds unexpected friendships, a resuscitated love life, tragedy and triumph, Juliette begins to wonder if she really wants to return home after all.

  Lingerie for Felons

  Ros Baxter

If there’s one universal truth, it’s this: You’re always wearing your worst underwear when you land in trouble.

Lola’s parents told her that everyone can make a difference. And she believed them. She’s been fighting the good fights since she was eleven years old. But at 23, Lola falls hard for an Australian stockbroker who thinks Doctors Without Borders is a porno and Joni Mitchell sounds like a harp seal being battered to death. She cuts him loose, but over the next fifteen years, through protests, misunderstandings, humiliating predicaments, and a number of poor underwear choices, their lives and paths continue to converge.

Along the way, Lola learns a few important life lessons: Never wear a red lace thong to a strip search. Make sure you take motion sickness pills if you’re going to the Southern Ocean to save the whales. And sometimes, Mr Right can be all wrong, and Mr Wrong just needs time to find the right path.

Funny, touching, emotional and political, Lingerie for Felons is Bridget Jones meets An Inconvenient Truth, about doing the right thing, finding the right person, and always thinking through your underwear choices.

  Carrier

For fans of The Walking Dead and The Hunger Games comes a YA novel about freedom, choice and family — and the terrifying disease that makes them mutually exclusive.

From the day she was born, Lena has viewed the world through the jagged window of a razor-wired fence. The hundred-acre property she shares with her mother in the Australian outback may keep her safe from the Y-Carrier disease, but it is no longer enough to hold Lena’s interest, and her mother’s increasingly tight grip on her free will is stifling.

Just as her curiosity blooms and her courage rises, she meets a boy through the fence — the first boy she has ever laid eyes on. His name is Patrick and he comes with a dangerous yet irresistible invitation of adventure beyond the fence, an invitation to which Lena cannot say no.

But Lena’s newfound freedom is short-lived and she soon discovers that the Y-Carrier disease is not the only enemy she faces on the outside. Her new enemies want something Lena has, and they are willing to do anything to get it…
