Fergus let her take all the time she needed. He lived in both camps all his life, but he never knew he was Urlu until a few months ago. He had to learn, the same way she was learning now.
They strolled on through the woods to the clearing where this whole crazy situation started. They kept hold of each other’s hands crossing the stepping stones and the last stretch of forest to the plains beyond.
Hazel paused at the edge of the field. She gazed on the castle rising so grand and inviting to rake the firmament with its pinnacles. Colored flags whipped from its turrets, and soldiers crisscrossed the battlements on constant guard.
While she and Fergus stood there watching, a squad of dragons raced down the far hill, over the ridge and down to the fields. They whipped the grass to swaying waves and whizzed up the castle walls to land on the roof.
“Are ye certain no time has passed?” Fergus asked. “It looks peaceful enough.”
“No one knows we’ve been gone,” Hazel whispered. “They aren’t even looking for us.”
He rubbed his head. “They’ll be surprised.”
“Yes, they certainly will be.”
“Are ye ready fer this, lassie?” he asked.
She laughed out loud. “More than ready.”
He put his arms around her and kissed her. The sun shone on her cheeks and filled her heart to overflowing. He let her go, and they turned around to see Angus and Carmen walk over the drawbridge. The King and Queen of Urlu stopped to survey the day when their eyes rested on the travelers. A question sparked in Angus’s eyes.
Fergus took a deep breath and grabbed Hazel’s hand. “Awright, then. Let’s go.”
The pair set off across the field, headed home.
