Reclaiming Katie

Katie looked up at Will. His eyes were shining and full of love. As he bent to kiss her, the guests erupted into cheers. Jacob pat his chubby hands together, looking around excitedly.

"I love you, Katie Anderson," Will said as he rested his forehead against hers.

"I love you, too," she whispered.

  One year later.

Katie paced the length of her living room. As her bare feet moved silently over the hardwood floor, she shushed the fussy baby on her shoulder. Moonlight streamed in the windows, lighting her path and the crickets song kept in time with her whispers.

Will appeared in the doorway clad only in boxers on this hot summer night. He rubbed his eyes and then watched her for a moment. She smiled when she saw him.

  "Is she okay?"

"Just a little colicky, I think," Katie said, shifting the newborn to her other shoulder.

Will held out his hands. "Let me take a turn."

  "Are you sure?"

He nodded and settled the infant against his chest. "Go get some sleep," he whispered and kissed her.

Katie willingly accepted. Just before closing the door, she turned to look at them and smiled. Bathed in moonlight, Will put his lips to his new baby daughter’s soft, downy head and began to walk the floor.
