“You give off another scent. Father said it’s one of nurturing. Males will find it sweet and calming. They would no more harm you than they would their own mother. During the baby’s first year, you will never be more than few feet from her. As she grows and becomes stronger, she will want to explore and will eventually go farther on her own. By then the milk you produce will have regulated. Because your milk is necessary for the child’s survival, you will be protected by a new shield.”

  “My milk is my shield?”

“That’s one way to look at it.”

  “That is so weird.”

  “Strange but true.”

“What else did you father tell you about women?”

“He sat me down and explained the facts of life in great detail,” Rask said and winked.

Grace stood before him nude. Rask was once again on his knees before her. Grace moaned when he spread her legs and licked her. In small circles his tongue swirled, dipped and retreated until her breath increased. Grace buried her hands in his hair and rocked against him. She cried out when she came. Rask slowly stood and stripped off his clothing.

“You’ve been holding out on me,” he said huskily.

Grace was confused until he gently pushed her to her knees. “Hm, your father’s been a busy man,” she said.

Rask groaned when she wrapped her lips over his head and sucked him hard. His erection was stunning. Rask pulled her up under her arms and carried her to the water. The water was warm and welcoming. When they were waist high, Rask set her down. His mouth claimed hers. He spread her legs and Grace tossed back her head when he entered her. He pumped into her hard and fast. The water built waves around them. Finally Rask slowed. Grace dropped her head to his shoulder and waited for his bite. It never came. Rask howled his release.

“You didn’t bite me,” she said in confusion.

“There was no need. You’re already carrying my child. A male grows when a female is ready to conceive. Apparently it’s the only time he grows so big. So the bite isn’t just to relax you after all, it’s to make you more receptive. The added hormone is to help give a piece of me, my shield, to our baby.”

“So you won’t bite me anymore?”

“In about four years from now we will be due to have a son. Father says my body will know when you’re ready. But there are times when I will bite just for the hell of it. Except not until after the baby comes.”

“But human females get their period every month, so after the baby is born it will start again,” she said.

  “Huh?”

  “We go into heat.”

  “Oh. Father says you won’t.”

“I won’t get my period for four years?” She was flabbergasted.

  “Nope.”

Grace snuggled up closer to him. “I think I like your mating rituals.”

“It’s for the female’s protection, and I guess our own. We can’t have our males in must every month. We would go crazy from the hormones. Can you imagine an entire week of being moody, horny and nutty, every month?”

  “Gee, no,” Grace said dryly.

Grace suddenly shrieked when she saw a water snake headed toward them. A force field activated and Rask went flying across the pond. By the time he landed, his armor was up. He leaped back into the pond and decapitated the reptile. Grace was staring wide-eyed, mouth gaping.

“Our baby can toss you on your ass!” she squealed.

Rask moved closer, but couldn’t come near her. His hand lifted and he knocked on the invisible shield.

  “Baby, let your father in.”

Grace giggled. “It might help if you put your armor down.”

Rask lowered his armor. Grace’s shield came down. Rask chuckled and pulled her close.

  “Close your eyes,” Rask said.

Grace complied. He then told her to open them. Once more they were on Rask’s planet and at his favorite place. They were already in the other pond.

“There is nothing here to startle either of you,” Rask said.

“Wait until I tell Tosk you were beaten up by a baby.”

“Very funny. I have a feeling very soon Tosk will be learning all about babies.”

  “Why?”

“Father says he wasn’t surprised Tosk found one of the women, or that she was known to you. Your scent was on her and led him right to her. Like a beacon. Warriors mate at the same time. They have offspring at the same time too.”

“I’m happy for them. It will be nice to carry together,” she said then had a thought. “Your father’s warrior mate, he died.”

“Yes, he mated with a female.”

  “But your father didn’t mate.”

“No. My father raised Tosk and I together.”

“Tosk is Cobra’s warrior mate’s son?”

  “Yes.”

“So can your father shield Stacie?”

“No. He could shield Tosk’s mother. Cobra never had need to shield Tosk. All Castian males keep the shield their father gives them. It never wears off, and only gets stronger.”

  “Your customs are so strange.”

  “Do you object?”

“Not at all,” she said and snuggled into his arms.

“Now that you know of Earth, do you think your father might find a mate?”

“I don’t know, but I doubt it,” Rask said thoughtfully.

  “Why?”

“Father never stopped loving my mother. Everything he had he gave to her. No, I think Cobra will be too involved with politics for a female.”

“You never know,” Grace said and smiled. “Love can be found in the oddest places.”

Rask nodded in agreement. Grace sighed when his lips settled onto hers. Grace knew exactly what Rask was thinking—and it had nothing to do with hormones…well, maybe nothing.
