“Tell me what happened,” she demanded.

“Anna, why dwell on the past?”

  “Tell me!”

I decided to indulge the woman, as she was clearly looking for some form of closure. “Oscar made a…well, a discovery in the vehicle of one of my employees,” I explained, “and he requested that we no longer do business with him, fearing the trouble it would bring for his family. When I was informed of this, I went to the shop in the hopes of having a decent conversation, man to man and face to face. Unfortunately, your husband became disrespectful and expressed his distaste for my occupation. One thing led to another, as they say, and one of my soldiers had to restrain him.” I paused, giving her time to digest the information. “As it turned out, your Oscar had a weak heart—a good one but weak nonetheless.”

“So you left him there to die?” she questioned. “Why didn’t you call for help?”

“That’s not what I do, Anna,” I said, staring into her eyes.

“You let my husband die and had my children murdered,” she mumbled.

“Again, your husband had a weak heart,” I corrected. “As for your children, they died at the hands of another man.”

She wiped her eyes, catching the tears flowing over her lids. “Did you ever love her, my Diamond?” she finally asked.

“Of course I did,” I stated. “I wanted to give her the world, but I guess fate had other plans.” I refrained from divulging the fact that her daughter was a whore, as there are some things a mother doesn’t need to know about her child.

“She loved you,” she said, “and you destroyed her. I hope you live with that for the rest of your miserable life.” She rose standing on her feet.

“Is there anything else?” I asked respectfully.

“Yes. When death comes for you, Leon, I pray I’m alive to witness it.”

“I pray you are too,” I stated seriously. I watched Anna as she exited. She was nothing more than a broken-spirited woman looking for sympathy and compassion, two things that were foreign to my soul.

  Epilogue

I was perched in a chair next to the small metal bed, watching Diamond move her head slowly from left to right until finally fluttering her lashes and opening her eyes.

It had been six weeks since Luis’s men had opened fire on her and Randall, leaving his body riddled with bullets and his brains seeping from his skull. When I arrived on the scene, I saw Diamond lying on the pavement. I climbed out of my vehicle with my gun in hand, creating more chaos at an already chaotic scene, but I was determined to save her if I could. When I’d received the call that Randall and Diamond were in trouble, I’d wasted no time springing into action. I wished I could have saved Randall, but some things are out of our hands, and his life was one of them.

I reached Diamond and found her bloody and wounded but still alive. I lifted her up in my arms, carried her to my vehicle, and fled the scene as quickly as possible to get her the medical attention she desperately needed. It was touch-and-go at first, but the doctor advised me she would survive.

“Wh-where am I?” she groaned, looking at me with cloudy eyes.

“You’re in a safe place now, Diamond,” I said, leaning forward in my chair.

She flinched, then used her right hand to push the cotton sheet and fleece blanket I had covered her with down to her waist, until her naked breasts and stomach were exposed. I watched as she stared at the gauze bandage covering her side and a portion of her stomach.

“The bullet entered your back and went out your side. You also took a shot to your left bicep,” I explained. “You lost a lot of blood, but you’re going to be fine.”

She nodded, then pulled the sheet back up to cover herself. She stared at me, studying my face intently, undoubtedly trying to remember where she knew me from.

“I’ll go over details of what happened later. Right now, you just need to rest and regain your strength.”

“My brother?” she asked, clearing her throat.

I shook my head, acknowledging the thoughts I knew she was thinking.

  She started to cry softly.

I felt uncomfortable, not knowing what words to say, so I said nothing at all.

After several seconds of sobbing, she looked at me again. “Who are you?” she questioned. “I-I know you, don’t I?”

“You do,” I confessed. “You know me as Z, but you can call me Lawrence.”
