  “Trey.”

“Trey, I’m in a bit of trouble,” I whispered. “I stacked a bunch of files for Mr. Potter in with some of the documents I thought needed to be filed up here. Someone took them from my desk but it turns out that Potter needed them. He’s been out and I haven’t told him. Is there any way that I can get a peek back there and see if I can’t find them?”

“I can’t let anyone back here,” Trey said with authority.

“Look, I don’t want you to get in any trouble. But he’s going to have a stroke if he finds they got shredded and it was my fault. I could get fired.”

“I could get fired if I let anyone back here.”

This one was enjoying his small sliver of authority. I’d have to up the ante.

“I won’t tell. Plus, I’ll owe you one. And I mean really owe you. Name it and I’ll give it to you. Anything you want.”

He squinted at me. I knew what he was thinking because it was what they all were thinking.

  “Really?”

“I’m dead serious. I see how you’re looking at me. All I want is five minutes to grab my files before they get shredded. Whatever you want, just for five minutes.”

Trey was young, but I could tell the wheels were turning.

  “Five minutes?”

“Just five.” I batted my eyes at him.

Without saying another word, he unlocked the door and I rushed inside.

“Potter’s files are kept in the third row with the most recent in the front.” Trey pointed.

I sashayed down the aisle. It was like the warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark. I was sure the Arc of the Covenant was probably back here somewhere, as well as Jimmy Hoffa’s remains and the Lindbergh baby, all stashed neatly in a bankers’ box.

Sure enough, just like Trey said, Potter’s files were boxed up in the row he said they’d be.

“What am I looking for?” I mumbled as I grabbed the first box, set it on the floor and started looking through it. There were reports and emails. Contracts and inventory lists. All of it looked legitimate. I grabbed another box and it contained more of the same. Finally, I found one box that had a tiny folder at the very end that had a word I was interested in. Expenses.

I grabbed the file and opened it. It wasn’t the normal breakdown of spending that I expected to see. It didn’t list gas or mileage or meals or anything like that. Instead, it listed a running tab at The Allegro. I remembered Ruth talking about how that hotel offered four-hour naps. Blu also had an exorbitant total listed. But the really creepy thing wasn’t the miscellaneous florists or jewelry stores listed but the very long bill of doctor visits. Almost every entry was for the same amount of money. There were three listed in the month of April alone.

“Oh, my,” I whispered. If this meant what I thought it meant, the officers at ABF were going to have quite a bit of explaining to do. Having worked as a stripper, I was all too familiar with the girls who had quick doctor visits a couple times a year.

I pulled down just a few more boxes and found the same expense folders in each and stuffed them all into one folder. Nervously, I tucked it under my arm and quickly began to fuss like a helpless girl so Trey would come back and help me.

“Thank you so much,” I purred quietly. “I found what I needed. You have no idea how much you saved me. Would you help me put these back?”

Trey nodded and together we restocked the boxes. They looked as if they hadn’t been touched at all.

“You won’t tell anyone you let me back here, will you?” I pouted.

  “No.” He shook his head.

“Well, did you come up with some way I could repay you?” I didn’t think he’d ask for sex right there. However, what he did say shocked me to the core.

“Go on. I don’t want anything from you.” He smiled innocently. “I hate this job. What do I care if I get fired?”

  “Are you kidding?”

  He shook his head no.

“Tell me, Trey. What do you want to do? If money were no object?”

“I’d like to be a writer,” he said proudly.

“Really?” I stepped up to him. “Well, you might be sitting on a bestseller. Corporate greed. Sex. Slush funds. An ex-stripper and a cop looking to stop it all before time is up.”

He tilted his head to the left and eyed me suspiciously.

“Thank you for your help.” I set the file down. Then I leaned in and kissed him as if he were the last man on earth.

He didn’t say anything as I took my file and left the records department.

The only thing on my mind now was getting in touch with James. But in order to get to him, I was going to have to get past Potter, who was in my cubicle when I got back to my desk.

  Chapter Eighteen

  James

“You did what?” I had to have heard Candace wrong. Maybe my phone had a bad connection. I was in the surveillance vehicle. It was an old beater. Maybe I’d inhaled too many fumes. I couldn’t believe all this time I’d spent skulking around corners and peeking on computer desktops and she, with a flip of her hair and flash of a smile, had gotten exactly what I was looking for.

“Do you want these files or not?” she inquired.

“I do.” I cheered, making Rodriguez look at me like I’d just lost my mind. “Do you want to spend the rest of your life with me? Because I’m not letting you go. Not anywhere.”

“I do,” she replied without hesitation.

“Rod. We’ve got the leverage we need and I’m getting married.”

“Congratulations on both.” He clapped me on the shoulder. “I’m going to be your best man, right?”

“We’ll talk about that later.” I tapped his chest. “We’ve got to get a hold of Potter, and quick. He’s got to feel that something is wrong, and we don’t want him skipping town.”

“There’s going to be a huge office party on Friday,” Candace interrupted. “All the chief officers and vice presidents are going to be here.”

  “What’s the occasion?” I asked.

“Some new account they’d been vying for or a settlement they’d been waiting for. I’m not sure but the whole place has been buzzing about it for a few days. There’ll be an open bar, food, music. Patty says there hasn’t been a party like this for about five years. It could be a perfect opportunity to talk with our friend.”

“What do you think about taking one more dip in shark-infested waters?” I asked my new fiancée. “Except this time, I’ll be right there with a life jacket.”

  “I’ve got my bikini ready.”

Rodriguez slapped himself on the forehead.

“Don’t make me visualize, honey, or I won’t be able to concentrate,” I teased.

“Me neither.” Rodriguez piped up. I pointed my finger at him and shook my head. He answered with his hands raised in surrender.

I told Candace that I’d give her further instructions later that afternoon when I was up on the ABF floors. Meanwhile, Rodriguez opened his laptop and connected to my phone to download the images Candace had copied to me.

“I can’t believe what I’m reading.” I shook my head. “Rod, do you get the same creepy feeling about these doctor visits as I do?”

“Unless the guy’s got a case of herpes that is continually flaring up, I think we’re assuming the same thing.” He shook his head in disgust.

Just then my phone indicated that the bug was picking up voices.

Putting it on speaker, Rod and I listened to what was going on in Potter’s office.

“Right now?” It was a female voice.

“Yes, right now.” That was clearly Potter speaking.

“Well, make sure your door is locked.”

“It is,” he assured the female. “Now, show me.”

“Show you what?” Her voice was playful. Whoever it was didn’t mind what she was doing.

“Let me see you aren’t wearing any panties. Bend over.”

  “Like this?”

  We heard Potter let out
a high groan.

“Come here and sit on my lap. I can’t wait until tonight.”

Rod and I looked at each other.

“Did you just hear a zipper go down?” he asked me. I nodded. Potter had to be at his desk, if not on top of it.

“Someone could come in,” the female said.

“No. No one will come in. I promise. Just sit on my lap.”

  “What about me?”

“Here, it’s one hundred and fifty. Take it. Just sit on my lap.”

“Oh, Larry.” Her voice had become quieter.

“Tell me you like that,” Larry mumbled. “Tell me.”

“You know I do, Larry,” she replied like she had been trained to say it. “Oh, it feels so good. Don’t stop.”

Within seconds, we heard a high-pitched grunt and that was it.

“Quick, stand up.” Larry hustled the female. “Hurry, pull your skirt down and fix your shirt. Okay, now pretend nothing happened.”

  “I know. I know.”

Without either of them exchanging another word, Rod and I could hear the office door open up. Potter was still there picking up the phone and calling some client to talk about the status of an email or phone call or something that wasn’t important to us.

“That literally took less than five minutes.” Rod looked at his watch.

“Well, he is at work.” I couldn’t help but think of the times I’d been with Candace during work hours. My pants tightened at the memory and it felt as if I hadn’t felt her skin in months. I’d have to make sure that changed soon.

“Gross. And you were underneath his desk the other day,” Rod teased.

“Don’t remind me.” I choked. “I’ll keep you posted. Stay on VonLyons. She might be a good backup if anything goes south with Potter.”

I got out of the car and jogged a block to my building. I had light bulbs to change on three floors and a spill to clean on another. And, as luck would have it, the leak in the men’s room on the eighty-second floor had not been fixed. I’d get to see Candace after all.

Since I was the one who had sabotaged the pipe, it wasn’t hard for me to fix. I knew exactly where it was coming from and why. Just a little loosening of a bolt and releasing the pressure knob underneath the sink gave a nice steady drip. Of course, none of the fellows on the floor who wore suits would dare touch any of this. Bob probably didn’t trust Sean to try and fix it on his own. So, it all worked out fine.

As I walked out of the men’s room, I saw Candace. It was like she had been waiting for me. Maybe she could feel the connection when I was close by like I did. Whatever it was, she gave me that smile as she went into the stairwell.

I found her in the storage room waiting for me.

“What are you doing here?” I whispered as I shut the door behind me.

“Waiting for you.” She leaned against the table with her legs slightly parted.

“I can’t believe you did what you did to get those files.”

“Here are the hard copies, if you want them.” She tossed a folder on the table next to her. I wasn’t interested in the file or the case. I stepped up to her and with my thigh, pushed her legs further apart in order to stand between them.

With one hand, she pulled her blouse up, revealing her breasts. They looked even better held back in a pink bra. But when she unhooked it from the front and they fell free, I groaned. I took the soft, full mounds in my hands, kneading them. The strain in my pants was unbearable.

I rubbed against her valley, making her spread her legs even further. Leaving her right breast, my hand found its way between her thighs. I teased her through her panties, making her wetter until I was sure she would come if I didn’t stop.

Gently, I unzipped my pants, letting them fall around my ankles, and pulled her panties to the side. I entered her with one slow thrust. She took every inch of me and her body shuddered with pleasure.

As slow as I could, I slid in and out of her, watching as she responded by pushing her hips hungrily into me. I knew she wanted me to go faster. She wanted to get fucked good and hard. But I wanted to pleasure her. I wanted her to feel her climax slowly climb up on her, tingling every inch of her body starting at her hot, wet center and spreading out with every stroke of my cock.

It was working. She was gasping by now. I could see by the rose color in her cheeks that she was right on the edge. Only then did I start to move faster.

“Come on, baby,” I whispered. “Give it to me.”

She arched back against the table, offering her breasts up to me. Her breath was coming in hot gasps.

I reached down and found her bud that was swollen and excited. When I brushed it gently, her legs spread even further. I brushed it again and I knew it wouldn’t take long by the way she quietly cried out. That was it.

I rubbed her petal back and forth as I rode her center, feeling myself swell inside her.

“Yes! Yes! James!” she whispered as her eyes rolled back in her head.

Every muscle in her body tightened around me and I exploded with her. I had imagined riding her slowly until she screamed my name but it was impossible not to buck with this woman begging me, pulling me into her, and draining me of everything.

I kissed her full lips and ran my hands through her hair as we came down from our orgasm together.

“Did you mean what you said about getting married?” she finally said while we both put ourselves back together.

“I never say things I don’t mean,” I said before kissing her passionately.

We went back to work with smiles on our faces and a plan in place to corner Potter at the office party. But, we weren’t aware that he’d have a surprise for us as well.

  Chapter Nineteen

  Candace

“How do I look?” I asked Patty when I came In Friday morning.

“Like you’re hunting for a husband,” she teased. I had to laugh. Some of the things that came out of her mouth could be considered rude if you didn’t know Patty. But I took what she said as a compliment. I wore a gray ankle-length skirt with a slit and a crisp white blouse that tied around the middle.

“Well, I heard everyone was going to be here. I figured I better make a good impression.”

“You will, honey,” she replied, giving me the ‘okay’ sign as she answered the phone. I walked to my cubicle, saying hello to everyone and smiling happily. I was excited. Not just because of the party, but because today we were going to get Potter on the hot seat.

Very little work got done throughout the day. Everyone was dressed nicely. People were visiting each other at their cubicles and in their offices. By the time five o’clock rolled around, the place was buzzing like a beehive.

“I can’t believe how excited everyone is,” I said to Etta while dropping off a few copies she had requested.

“This is a rare occasion.” Etta pulled her lips down into a frown. “Mark your calendar, because you won’t see another one of these for a long time.”

  “Like Halley’s Comet.”

“That’s exactly right.” She pointed at me and laughed out loud.

The huge conference room had been transformed into a buffet and bar. A DJ was setting up in the lobby while Patty ordered a couple of maintenance men around, getting them to move the furniture out of the way so space could be used for dancing. One of those men looked very familiar, and he winked at me as I walked past.

At five o’clock on the dot, an announcement was made over the loudspeaker that everyone was to stop working and come to the lobby. I did as I was told and followed behind Ruth and her lackey, who complimented me on my outfit. I nodded and pushed my way past them to catch up to Larry Potter.

“This ought to be a fun party,” I said innocently. He looked at me quickly, then grumbled something or other.

“I hope you’ll save a dance for me,” I whispered and strutted ahead of him. I took a spot next to Patty, who handed me a pink frothy drink that smelled like cherries and tasked like straight vodka.

sp; The bosses all gave speeches talking about how long it had been since they’d had anything to celebrate. This was going to be a great year for ABF. None of it could have been done without the whole staff. Blah, blah, blah.

It took mere minutes for the party to set into full swing after the speeches. People were dancing and toasting and even a few of the loftier chiefs were laughing out loud and patting each other on the back. I watched as Potter laughed and slapped a few guys on the back while he searched out anything with boobs.

Within an hour, Patty had kicked off her shoes and was dancing with a long-haired guy from the mail room. Ruth was slurring her words as she tried to explain her love of baseball and football to one of the managers who was looking at her chest the whole time.

“It’s like a Christmas party form the 1950s.” I heard a male voice behind me. It was Trey, from the records department.

  “What do you mean?”

“Well, before political correctness, people went to office parties to have fun. Sometimes things went a little far but if it didn’t result in a death or a fire, it was just back to work on Monday.”

  “And now?” I smirked.

“Ha! Come Monday, I’ll be shocked if the doors aren’t bolted shut.”

I chuckled just as I saw Potter guiding a very giddy Ruth down the hallway toward his office.

“Excuse me just a second.” I followed cautiously. When I peeked around the corner, I saw him hold his office door open for her. She tripped inside, laughing loudly. Potter looked both ways before stepping inside, closing the door behind them.

I wasn’t sure what I should do. She obviously wasn’t in control of herself. But she did seem comfortable enough with him. Maybe she had done this sort of thing before. What did I know?

“You sure do look pretty.” I heard from behind me.

“Where have you been?” I smiled up at James and was relieved he’d finally arrived. He was wearing his janitor’s uniform and was the most handsome guy at the party. I quickly told him what was happening in Potter’s office. Within seconds, James had picked the lock without being noticed and opened the door.
