Like Miss Clack copying tracts out by hand, or like tract societies stuffing pamphlets into bottles, postal reformers borrowed the prestige of manuscript to ease the distribution of print.

  THE BOOK AS WASTE: HENRY MAYHEW AND THE FALL OF PAPER RECYCLING
