I closed my eyes and sighed. “We need to still face your father, assuming he takes my treaty offer seriously.”
She lifted her head. “I really hope he does. It would be best for the citizens, who seem to be the ones first in line to die, like those farmers.”
She was right. A peace treaty for both sides would give both kingdoms the type of prosperity that had been missing for twenty years. I could see the future and it was going to be brighter than anyone ever anticipated.
A knock on the door interrupted my silent reverie. I covered Rory.
“Enter!” I called.
One of the castle guards pushed the door open and his eyes widened at the path of clothing before his gaze landed on us on the bed.
“Um, King Zachary, um. There seems to be a treaty delegation at the gates.”
I smiled at Rory. “Let them in and get them some food. We will be down in a few minutes.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
After the door closed, I jumped out of the bed and rustled up some clothing for me. I glanced at Rory and then at her ruined clothing. “I’ll send up the fae,” I said. “In the meantime, you may clean up in my pool.” I waved to the small tub in the adjoining room. “It’s not as grand as the one in your father’s castle...”
“It is perfect.” She climbed out of bed and crossed to me, stood on her tiptoes, and caught a quick kiss before crossing to the bathtub.
I had to tear my gaze away from her perfect form. She was worthy of being called a goddess, and a worthy partner in ruling this kingdom, not to mention my lover for the rest of my life.
“It’s time for peace,” I whispered and set out to do just that. For Rory and for me.
