Artair's Temptress: Highlander Fate Book Five

“I always kent there was something more tae ye,” Artair had told him, clamping his hand on his shoulder. “Ye’re a good man, and ye’ve served me well. If ye need anything from me, I’m always here.”
Latharn’s heart warmed at the memory of Artair’s words as he stepped forward, joining the throng of well-wishers. He reached Diana first, giving her a respectful bow, but she waved it off and reached out to embrace him.
“I think you’ll find happiness of your own with a bonnie lass,” she said when she released him, probing his eyes with her own. “And sooner than you think.”
He studied her with a baffled frown. During the past few weeks, he’d caught her staring at him a few times. He wondered now if this was what those looks were about.
But he doubted this was true. He had a fight ahead of him to claim his place as laird and chieftain of his clan. He had no time to court or marry a lass. Once he claimed his lairdship, he'd marry a suitable lass, likely one of noble birth, who would help cement his claim and give him sons to carry on his line.
He merely gave Diana a polite smile before offering Artair his congratulations—and a farewell.
“Donnae forget—if ye need anything, send a messenger or a letter. I’ll help ye if I can.”
“I thank ye,” Latharn said, holding the gaze of the man he’d served and admired for so long, before turning to head out of the festive bustle of the great hall.
He headed out to the courtyard where a stable boy brought him his horse, already loaded with a bag of supplies for his journey.
Latharn mounted his horse and cast one last look at the castle before riding out of the courtyard. His days of serving others had come to an end. Now was the time to embrace his destiny as a leader.
He rode out of the castle gates, ready to claim his birthright—and his future.
