The Alien Reindeer's Joy

Page 12

by Starr Huntress

“That was something,” Chloe breathed, her voice completely breathless.

Kaelar laughed. “I would say it was better than something.”

Chloe giggled. Her hand found his and she pressed a kiss to his lips.

How lucky had she been to find a guy like this? She snuggled closer into his chest, yawning. They fell asleep like that, perfectly content in each other’s arms.

  Epilogue

  Kaelar

Nerves bubbled inside Kaelar as Chloe rang the doorbell. A moment later, the door was opened by a woman who looked exactly like an older version of her, with the same curly brown hair and green eyes.

“Chloe! It’s about time. The food is getting cold.”

“Sorry, mom. One of the nurses was sick, so I needed to stay until someone else arrived.”

Chloe hugged her mother, ignoring her grumblings about her being late. Kaelar stood nervously behind her, a bouquet of flowers in his arms. The older woman’s put-out expression vanished instantly when she laid eyes on him.

“You must be Kaelar.” She smiled.

“It’s very nice to meet you, ma’am.”

Mrs. Wilson—Amanda, as Chloe had said she would insist to be called—took the flowers from him, beaming. “It’s about time my daughter had a boyfriend! You can’t imagine how pleased I was when she told me.”

Kaelar knew exactly how pleased Amanda had been because Chloe had told him all about that conversation, but he smiled politely. “I’m very lucky to have found her.”

“And what’s this?” Amanda gestured at his antlers.

“Oh, you know, just getting into the Christmas spirit,” he said cheerfully. He’d worn a Santa hat as well, just for added effect.

Amanda accepted his explanation easily enough. “Well, come on in! No need to wait outside in the snow.” She smiled and Kaelar relaxed a bit. At least, she hadn’t completely rejected him as a mate for her daughter.

They stepped inside the warm house and sat down for a delicious Christmas meal. Amanda had cooked the most amazing things Kaelar had ever tasted during his time on Earth. Roasted turkey, carrots, and turnips. For dessert, they had apple pie.

A warm red haze surrounded them as they enjoyed their meal. Kaelar got on perfectly well with Amanda and he was happy to discover that the meal did not include reindeer.

“So, what about children?” Amanda asked as he bit into his slice of apple pie. “Are those on the horizon for you, Kaelar?”

Chloe choked on her pie. Kaelar patted her back and when her coughing finally ceased, she turned to her mother, her face beet red. “Mom! You can’t ask that!”

  “Why not?”

Chloe glanced at Kaelar. They had not yet discussed children together. Kaelar loved children and knew that Chloe did too, but her expression was uncertain and it made his stomach drop.

  “I’m not sure if—if we can…”

Comprehension dawned on Kaelar. He realized he hadn’t spoken about it with Chloe yet. Yes, they were a different species, but that didn’t matter when he found his mate. Humans and reilendeer were compatible in every way that mattered.

He gave her a reassuring smile. “We’re meant to be together. Of course, we’re going to have children. If you want to, that is.”

Chloe paused, staring at him. “I want to,” she breathed, seemingly forgetting about her mother as she looked into Kaelar’s eyes. Clearly, she understood what he was saying without revealing everything to Amanda.

Their hands met under the table and when she beamed at him, the red haze thickened around her. Kaelar pulled on it almost unconsciously, feeling the warmth of her joy fill him. He grinned back at her, happier than ever. If she’d been reilendeer, she would see the red haze around him too.

It might have been his job to spread joy, but she was his source of joy.
