“Where did you roll in from—Miami?” said Mark. “I heard there was a tremendous battle near Tampa.”
“Wait—you haven’t been exposed to anything, have you?” said Lydia.
The man waved his fingers along his face, letting out a smile. “You ever seen one of those creatures with a tan and who can talk?”
Mark shrugged his shoulders. “Good point.”
The man climbed on board their ship, shaking Mark’s hand firmly, making him wince.
“Yes, we lost many lives there,” said the man as he looked at the other ships far to the north.
“Were you there?” said Lydia, offering him a bottle of water, which he refused.
“Not entirely.”
Lydia giggled. “That’s funny. What do you mean—either you were or you weren’t.”
The man moved closer to her, his throat seeming to flutter for a second. “I wasn’t there when that battle happened, but I knew others who were.” He circled around Mark, causing him to step back towards the console.
“And you’ve been traveling alone all this time?” said Lydia.
“I had a friend of sorts with me, but he couldn’t take the heat—decided it would be better to head north along the coast.”
“Yeah, sure he did,” chuckled Mark, giving Lydia a sideways glance. “Did he take a train or fly?”
“He’s resourceful; he will find his way.”
The man squatted, looking down into the galley. “Just the two of you on board?”
Lydia shook her head, moving closer to Mark, who was eyeing his fishing knife on the helm.
“Mister, maybe you should go,” Mark said.
“Name is Nick, actually.” He stepped to the helm, placing one hand over the knife and then resting his other on the woman’s bronze shoulder. His throat began to ripple, and something beyond his tongue moved. “And my hunger is off the charts.”
