Soon as he sees me, he has a smile on his face and his hands are on my waist pulling me in for a kiss. He still shows me every day how much he loves me and still wakes me up every morning with an orgasm as he promised to do all those years ago when he was convincing to move in with him.

"Where are the girls?" He asks, as he kisses my neck.

"Leo took them to the park. I'm testing some new recipes. Will you taste test them for me?" I ask him.

He laughs, "I hope you do more cookbooks. I love the taste testing part."

The first two recipes are new dessert breads Ryan and I spent the morning messing with.

"I love them both," Owen says.

The next one I’m most nervous about and the butterflies in my stomach kick into full gear. I hand him a cookie with a message on it. Owen didn't seem to notice the writing on the cookie and was going to eat it without reading. Ryan helped me with this idea, so he’s as excited as I am.

"What do you think of the message?" I ask him and watch him stop to read it.

"Shh, daddy doesn't know about me yet?” he looks a little confused until Ryan sets a second cookie in front of him. "Baby number four due in April."

His eyes snap to mine with a look of pure love on his face, "You're pregnant?"

I nod and just like the first time he falls to his knees in front of me and talks to the baby.

"Hey, there little peanut. I'm your daddy. I want you to know how much I love you and can't wait to meet you. Let's go easy on your momma over these next nine months, okay?" Then he kisses my belly and looks up at me.

  "I love you, Ellie."

  "I love you too, Owen."

It turns out I wasn't the only one with a surprise that day. Just before dinner, Mia shows up with her husband Teddy and a young woman named Julie in tow. Teddy is like family now, but I remember the first time Mia brought him home. She met him at Oakside. His unit had been out on patrol and they hit an IED. He was the only survivor and was suffering from PTSD.

I guess one of the guys in his unit had a large company he owned. He had someone there running it for him while he was deployed, but since his parents had passed away, he had no one to leave it to, so he left it to Teddy, his best friend.

When his friend died, and he inherited the company, Teddy suffered tremendous survivors’ guilt and Mia met him at that point in his life. Owen says all you need is the right woman to pull you through the darkest times. Mia was the right the woman for Teddy. He finally took over the company, and both he and the company are thriving now.

It's nothing for Mia and Teddy to show up unannounced, but this is the first time they have brought a guest.

"Hey, you’re just in time for dinner," I hug Mia.

"Perfect, can Ryan and Leo join us, we need to talk," Mia says with a smile on her face.

  "Everything okay?" I ask her.

"More than okay, come on let's eat, I'm starving."

We sit down to eat, and Julie sits next to Ryan and Leo and talks to them, asking all sorts of questions about what they do and about their families. They discuss their plans to adopt and the trouble they’ve had before.

After dinner, Allie and Becca head upstairs to get ready for bed, but Callie has fallen asleep in Owen's lap and I can tell he has no intention of moving her. Once the girls are upstairs, Julie turns to Mia.

"You were right about Leo and Ryan," she says.

Mia's face lights up, "So that's a yes?" She asks Julie.

Julie nods and Mia gets all excited hugging her and even Teddy is smiling while the rest of us sit there confused.

Then Julie turns to Ryan and Leo with tears in her eyes.

"Last year my parents and my husband were killed in a car crash. They left me with debt and a broken heart. A few months ago, a met a man, and I thought he loved me. It felt good to be wanted again. Turns out he was just using me. I’ll save you the details, but they aren't pretty. I found out I was pregnant, and he told me to get rid of it, there was no way it was his. I was standing outside the abortion clinic crying my eyes out when Mia found me."

Mia leans in and starts rubbing Julie’s back.

"Teddy had a meeting in the building across the street. I saw Julie and wanted to make sure she was okay," Mia adds.

"Well, one kind word from Mia and it all came pouring out of me. Please don't hate me, but I don't want to be a mom. My husband was my soul mate, and I don't want a child that isn't his. Not to mention if I were to have a child, I'd want him or her to have a family and a support system, and right now I don't even have a roof over my head. Mia told me about you two wanting to adopt and I know she was sent to stop me from going into that clinic. After talking with you tonight, I'd love for you to adopt this baby if you’re interested. I think you two will make amazing parents."

I am so happy for them I start to cry and I'm not the only one. Leo has his face buried in Ryan's neck and I can see his shoulders shaking and even Ryan has tears running down his face.

"Teddy has already said he's covering all medical expenses and birth costs," Mia says.

"We’ll cover all lawyer and adoption fees," Owen adds grabbing my hand.

This leads to even more tears. As everyone calms down, Mia starts telling us about her plan.

"We will be having Julie stay with us, since it's right down the road from you guys," Mia says.

"We’ll be at every appointment and if you get a craving no matter what time or how crazy we want to get it for you," Leo says she he wraps Julie in a hug.

Everyone starts talking about maternity clothes, and what Julie will need to be comfortable. Owen shocks us when he talks about adding on to the guest house to give it more bedrooms.

"Well, you won't be the only preggo in the house now," Ryan jokes with me, and Leo jumps up to hug me. "I'm so excited our kids will grow up together!"

"Well, I guess we should jump on the bandwagon because I'm about eight weeks along," Mia adds, and the cheers are enough to wake poor Callie up.

Owen takes her to get her ready for bed and as he's walking away, I remember the night he told me this is the life he was scared to dream of and I agree, only I think it’s much better.

  Epilogue 3

  Owen

  10 years later

"Not so fast, watch your speed," I say to Becca, who is behind the wheel of a car. A several ton car.

  "I know, dad," she says.

She’s been learning to drive for a few months now, and I'm still terrified every time I get in the car with her. She's my baby girl and so many things could happen to her.

I had the same problem when Allie started driving. I've had both of them take private lessons from an ex-cop, and when Allie got her license, I bought her the safest car on the market. It has blind-spot monitoring, stops the car if the car in front stops, and has a million airbags. I’ll be doing the same for Becca, too.

My girls are like their mom, they smile and shake their heads, but let me take care of them because they know I love them. I cherish this life my sweet Ellie has given me.

We have five kids and once we got our baby boy, Ellie said she was done being pregnant. I agreed because I'd give her anything she wants. Plus, I don't think I could handle another girl, four of them is enough.

Becca went out on her first date last night and I'm hoping she’ll talk about it. So far, she hasn't brought it up and it's been over an hour.

"So how was your date last night?" I ask, not able to wait any longer.

She laughs, "You held out longer than I thought you would. He was nice, we had dinner at the burger place you told us about and then we saw a movie, but I won't be seeing him again."

  "Why not?"

A ghost of a smile crosses her face, "Well, you and mom spoiled us, girls. The way you treat mom, the way you talk about how you feel about her. I want that and I'm not stupid enough to think I’ll find it at fifteen or sixteen, I guess I just don't want to waste my time either." We pull up to a red light and she looks over at me.

&nb
sp; "I love you, Becca Boo."

  "I love you too, dad."

We get home and before we go inside, I pull her into a big hug.

"Will you take a walk with me?" I ask her.

She nods, so I lead the way around the side of the house and we slowly make our way back to the lake.

"You're right, you know. I wasted my time on a few girls before I met your mom. I thought I was in love because I desperately wanted this." I hold my hand toward the house. "A family, a home, someone to love. I don't want you to go down the wrong path. When I saw your mom there was something about her. I had to talk to her. By the time the first dinner was over, I knew there was something special about her. But at that point, I was so used to women being there for money that I used the money to put a wall up with your mom. In less than two weeks, I knew she wasn't like that. She broke down my walls without even trying. The connection that was there, it was," I pause trying to find the right words.

  "Explosive?" Becca suggests.

I chuckle, "Yeah, explosive. I knew, but it took a while to convince her because she was worried for you and Allie. But I knew you three were meant for me. What I'm trying to say is you will know when it's right and I'm glad you aren't willing to settle. You don't need a boyfriend, but I don't want you to shut out anyone who approaches you either. You may not find your soul mate at sixteen, but then again you might. You can be open to the possibility and if he's the right one, he won't take no for an answer and he’ll prove himself over and over again."

She smiles, lost in thought as we look over the lake. Several minutes pass before she breaks the silence.

"You give that speech to Allie too?"

"A version of it, yes. I’ll give it to Callie and Delilah too. Ethan will get an entirely different talk."

Becca laughs, and it's still one of my favorite sounds in the world. We slowly walk back toward the house talking about different colleges she wants to go look at in a few months.

When I look up, Ellie is standing in the window watching us. She still takes my breath away every day, and I thank her every night for this life.

  Ellie

Owen and Becca walk back toward the house from the lake, and I know they’re talking about her date last night. Becca is like Allie, they have one date and realize what Owen and I have isn’t that common and show no interest in dating again for the foreseeable future.

I know the right guy will come along and sweep them off their feet and Owen will be a mess walking them down the aisle.

Leo and Ryan walk into the house. They adopted Julie's son and are great parents. The only problem is that little boy is girl crazy over my Delilah. Owen loves Alex, but he’s also constantly trying to keep him away from her.

A year after Alex was born, Leo and Ryan got the opportunity to adopt a little girl whose parents were drug addicts. She was four when they adopted her, and she wouldn’t talk to anyone. The doctors said it was a coping mechanism.

Since coming to live with Leo and Ryan, she’s come out of her shell and is smart and a talented artist. You can look at her stuff and think an adult drew it, not a little girl. She gets along great with my kids and when Leo and Ryan started talking about moving out of the guest house, Owen built on to it giving them more space, including a killer playroom for the kids.

Leo still helps with our kids, and he loves every minute of it. Ryan cooks and we sit down for a meal as a family with Leo, Ryan, and their kids every night.

Owen has pretty much retired and set up a board to run the business, so he doesn't have to go into the office. He didn't want to miss anything with the kids. Allie has shown an interest in the company and Owen is hoping she will be open to taking it over, but he won't say that to her, he doesn't want to sway her.

The cookbook Ryan and I wrote together did better than either of us thought, and we’ve teamed up and done two more since then. After that, we slowed down, wanting to spend our time with our families. We are wrapping up a holiday meal cookbook that will go to the publisher next month.

The publisher wanted to do this huge book tour and when we asked to bring our family, they jumped on it as a great marketing tool since holidays are family time.

When we talked to the kids about it, they got excited because Leo and Owen will be taking them out during the days we have signing and interviews, so for them, it's a real vacation.

After everyone is in bed that night, Owen takes me upstairs and like he does every night, he makes love to me and reminds me how much he loves me as if I could ever forget.

"Allie wants to spend Christmas in Aspen skiing this year," I tell Owen. "She’s trying to convince her sisters it's a good idea."

  "What do you think?"

"I think if she can put up solid reasoning why we should change our Christmas plans, and gets a majority vote, we should consider it."

Owen laughs and kisses my forehead, "You know I’ll give you girls whatever you want. This is the life I always wanted, but never thought a love like this existed."

The kind of love Owen showed me, where someone loves all of you, the good and the bad. It’s the kind of love our girls now look up to. This unwavering love is one I never thought was possible the night Mia sent me out for some free drinks.

“The kind that consumes you and changes you for the better," I smile.
