  Chapter Five

  The clock by the bed said it was morning, but Ross didn’t want to move. With Gretchen snuggled next to him and Tony and Matt on her other side, it felt like heaven. But it was his turn to cook, and a nice breakfast for their guest wouldn’t hurt.

  He rolled out of bed, watching to see if he woke Gretchen. Her eyes fluttered open.

  “Sorry,” he whispered.

  She tugged the sheet up slightly and shook her head. “I should go.”

  “No.” He grabbed his robe then set it on the bed for her. “I’ll make breakfast. You jumped in with the group, stick around to enjoy the afterglow.”

  “I’ll help.” She smiled.

  He slid on pair of shorts and went downstairs. After a quick trip to the washroom, where he noticed a few faded scratch marks on his back, he headed for the kitchen.

  A few minutes later, Gretchen joined him looking extra cute in his robe. She’d tugged her hair back into a ponytail.

  “What can I do to help?” she asked.

  “Kiss me and get yourself some coffee.” He pulled out a pan. “Eggs with reindeer sausage okay?”

  “Sounds great. Just call it caribou, not reindeer. That makes me think about eating Rudolph.” She walked up and gave him a peck on the cheek.

  “You’re suddenly shy?” He pulled her in for a real kiss.

  She relaxed in his arms and returned the kiss. “It’s weird. I don’t do a lot of sex on the first date. I know you and Tony better but Matt seems to be the big question mark.”

  “I don’t think so. He impressed you in the plane, and he’s intrigued by you. You’re the big draw. Matt and Tony are who they are. Some Alaskans hold their territory and hunker down through anything. Others like to move and go where the game and work is. There is nothing wrong with either approach. We just have to figure out how to make it all work for us.” He pulled eggs out of the fridge.

  As she grabbed milk for her coffee, Gretchen frowned. “What’s this?” She pointed to another container in the refrigerator.

  He grinned. “Walrus.”

  “Walrus. You can hunt those?” She shook her head and closed the door.

  “You can’t. I have some cousins up north on the coast. Native Alaskans have grandfathered hunting rights. Limited quantities and times of year, of course. But Alaska is one of the places that actually respects tradition and Native people’s ways. They thrived here long before whites came and learned from them—at least the smart whites did. Anyway, my cousins send me a few treats every year. Tony hates it,” Ross said.

  “Looks like pot roast.” She shrugged as she stirred her coffee.

  Ross chuckled. “Looks like pot roast but tastes like shellfish. I’ve visited my cousins plenty in the little villages. You’d be amazed what some people eat. Moose nose and salmon wings.”

  “Fish don’t have wings. Do you mean the fins are prepped to look like wings? Fins don’t have much meat.” She sat on the bar stool chairs and watched him cook.

  “Not the fins. The collar bone. Lots of fatty acids there. We can try it, if you want.” He let the eggs cook on a low heat while he chopped up some sausage.

  “Not sure that’d be a regular thing for me, but I’ll try almost anything.” She pulled her phone from the p
ocket of the robe.

  “Did Mel text asking you how things went?” Ross asked.

  She shook her head. “No, she’ll want those details in person. Ryan did do the app I requested. Or had someone help him do it. Wow. He’s very tech savvy.”

  “An app for the dresses?” Ross asked.

  “Yep.” Footsteps from upstairs made them both look up. “Are you sure I should stay? I don’t want to make things weird or worse for you guys.”

  Ross grabbed her phone. “Not possible. Trust me. In some relationships, the spark goes out. Here, it’s reignited routinely. I know sometimes it seems like Tony is bitter or Matt is dismissive. The truth is, different approaches make us a stronger group. Just like the town. If we need something, we’ve got a water route and a land route. Plus the air. If something happens, we have people with different strengths. That makes life easier, if a little more complicated.”

  “As long as you have the same goals and work together.” She grabbed her phone back. “I need to download the app.”

  “You have doubts?” Ross asked.

  She glanced at the stairs. “It’s early. You guys are nice and fun. The chemistry is there.”

  “No doubt there.” He tossed the sausage into the eggs.

  “In your office, you guys were sort of talking like it could go either way. Matt in or out.” She watched her phone and tapped it.

  “And?” he asked.

  She looked up at him. “You can’t let him go. Tony doesn’t want to, whether he admits it or not. You guys all love one another. I guess that’s part of the appeal of a ménage relationship. People get different things from different people. More support or a challenge, when they need it.”

  “That’s a good way to look at it. You need to think about it too, though. Do you want to get involved with a group where one member will drop out for a week or a month? If there were weather or equipment issues, he could be stranded somewhere for months. Safe, but waiting for repair parts or a break in the conditions.” He shrugged.

  “I’d be worried,” she said.

  “We’d all be worried. Is it worth it? Could you live with that unpredictability in a relationship? That’s what you have to ask yourself.” He watched as she took a self-pic and tapped on her phone some more.

  “Don’t we all have to?” she asked.

  “Very true. If Tony or I couldn’t live with it, we’d have left by now. Or kicked Matt out.” He waved the spatula around for emphasis.

  “Which guy would take you with him?” She leaned on the counter.

  “That’s complicated.” Ross grinned.

  “It all is. But so far it’s pretty great.” She blushed.

  “Good. I think I hear those two coming just in time.” He dumped a huge pan of eggs with sausage onto a plate, then cracked more eggs into the skillet. “Go eat.”

  “Darn, I was too busy playing with the app. I’ll set the table.” She put the eggs out as Tony and Matt came in.

  “I’ll get the plates.” Tony kissed her.

  Matt followed right behind with a lip-lock of his own. “I’ll bring over the coffee.”

  “Lots of helpers,” she said.

  Ross got the same affection from both men and caught Gretchen watching. She liked the men together. It didn’t weird her out or make her feel left out. Ross had worried it might. The right woman had finally come along, and he wasn’t going to let the other two scare her off or screw it up.

  “We could just have leftover cupcakes,” Matt said.

  Ross sighed. “No treats for breakfast. Good protein there. If you want carbs, go bake up some biscuits. I pulled out some of our frozen dough supply yesterday.”

  “I think I will.” Matt pinched Ross’s ass.

  Tony set the table and looked at Gretchen’s app with a smile. “The one great thing about Matt is his baking skills.”

  “You can’t grow up with a mom and four older sisters with your dad always gone and not learn how to cook. I had to protect the women and sit through tea parties. At least I learned to do it all. I’m very self-sufficient.” Matt rolled out the dough.

  “Must be fun for you to have two men around then,” she said.

  Matt smiled. “It is but with you in the mix it’s better. Balanced.”

  “Glad I can help. Too many men breeds competition sometimes. My dad and his buddies were all salesmen trying to outdo one another.” She shook her head.

  “We share well and can work together most of the time.” Tony kissed her.

  Ross leaned in close to Matt and whispered in his ear “Be yourself but don’t fuck this up.”

  Matt tensed for a second and nodded. Ross knew Gretchen had no idea that Matt had been married before. Or that commitment spooked him. What worked for their group could expand to include Gretchen but coming out with all of their skeletons at once could scare her off.

  A couple of weeks of interesting dates and nonstop work later, Gretchen finally got her ride along with Tony! Dressed in comfortable clothes plus hair neatly pulled back, she knew she was just going to observe but couldn’t wait. Matt had stuck around too, so everyone was happy and enjoying the summer fun.

  She’d been spending some nights at the guys’ place and some back with Mel just to not rush things. As much as she loved having three men all to herself, their dynamic stirred things up at times. It was overwhelming and arousing. One night away and she felt lonely even in a house full of people. Mel’s men weren’t always calm but there was a different feel among that group.

  As she climbed in Tony’s SUV she reminded herself not to compare groups. She and Mel weren’t the same person either. Mel’s men were attractive, but Gretchen never would’ve fallen in bed with those three. Love or chemistry, whatever it was, worked in odd ways.

  “You okay?” Tony asked.

  “Sure. I hope I’m not intruding,” she said.

  “No, not at all. Tiff doesn’t mind. She and I have ridden together for years.” He shrugged.

  “That’s great but I meant at home. Staying over so much. I like it there but I don’t want you guys to feel like I’m pushing things too fast.” She stared out into the wilderness as Tony pulled the car behind the firehouse and parked with the others. Even in a stable town, you were only miles from raw wilderness at any moment in Alaska. How could she feel safe here?

  “Why would we think you’re pushing us?” he asked.

  “I don’t know. Matt’s still here. You and he bicker, but I don’t know what’s normal. Maybe you guys are on your best behavior, and I’m not seeing reality yet.” She smiled.

  “We’re not great actors. If you’re over too much, we’ll let you know. If we’re annoying you, tell us. If you don’t speak up and fight, you don’t get what you want.”

  “Very Alaskan,” she said

  After clocking in and all the routine stuff, Gretchen finally met Tiff. The tall woman was in the same uniform as Tony. Gretchen might’ve met Tiff before, but she didn’t make much of an impression. Quiet, hair pulled back in a severe braid, no makeup, and barely a smile—Tiff didn’t scream welcome!

  Not that Gretchen judged people on their appearance. However, if Alaska ever made Gretchen that focused on function where she never even cared about style at all, she’d walk back to the lower forty-eight.

  As they rode along, Tiff didn’t say much. Tony gave Gretchen the basics as Tiff drove. Their first few calls were people passed out. Drugs and alcohol were likely involved. Gretchen watched as Tony and Tiff worked with police officers, firefighters, and residents. After two trips to the medical center to drop off people who needed stitches or rehydration, she realized it was like any other job. Somewhat dull but very important.

  “Not too exciting?” Tiff asked.

  Gretchen perked up. “I guess that’s a good day. Helping people but not major danger or death.”

  “Don’t jinx it,” Tiff replied.

  Tony chuckled. “Any day can go wild. That’s the fun. You never know what to e
xpect.”

  The next call came in when a woman had flipped her ATV and hurt herself. The police were there, but it was off-road a bit. The lights and sirens were a rush that Gretchen liked. Flying through red lights was a bit more unsettling, but she was very glad she’d done this in the summer and not in the ice and snow of winter.

  When they pulled up, the police officer was flagging them down. They parked and pulled out the gurney and the medical case. Gretchen followed along, staying out of the way. The officer said it looked like the girl was drinking. He saw her driving on the road and she went off-road into the woods as soon as she saw him. He heard the crash.

  They walked fast as he talked and arrived at a scene with enough blood to make her uneasy. The ATV had been moved aside by the officer and the woman held a rag to her leg.

  “I can’t walk,” she moaned.

  The duo went to work, and Gretchen watched them wrap the wound to stop the bleeding. They took her vitals and transferred her to the gurney. The haste over her blood loss made sense. Then Gretchen heard a growl.

  Everyone froze, and the officer drew his gun. Gretchen looked around and spotted the big gray wolf.

  “Get her to the ambulance.” The officer fired off a warning shot.

  The wolf growled and stood its ground.

  “What the hell?” Gretchen said.

  Tony and Tiff moved the patient and loaded her into the ambulance.

  “Go on,” the officer said.

  “Is there a pack?” She looked around as fear made her feet feel like lead. She tried to move but couldn’t.

  Tony walked up and pulled her away. Finally she could move and piled into the front seat pressed to Tony.

  Another shot went off and she shivered. They weren’t driving away. She looked at Tony, then out the window. The officer gave them a thumbs-up, and Tiff hit the lights and sirens.

  After they stopped at the medical center, Tony and Tiff were talking. Gretchen felt like she failed a basic Alaskan test. But shouldn’t the wolf have run at the gunshot?
